I always put a x behind the T anyways because I have a hard time recognizing TSU as Texas Southern. Nonetheless, I do understand. Living here in Huntsville, jokers always think we're Jxville State. The people who know know better.

It would been nice to chat with some informed posters. Dude you are clueless for even asking if the SWAC is better then the OVC. Look at the SWAC's record vs. OVC teams. I'm not a OVC fan. I'm a tsu fan. So it's not like I want OVC schools to beat SWAC schools, because i don't. HBCU's first. However it's a great chance the SWAC will go 0-4 vs. the OVC this year. I hate to say it, but JxSU is going to get into ASU's ash.
One reason i feel good about this season is because we got better as the year went on. We played against Eastern Il & SEMO without our starting QB.
He returned vs EKU but was not effective.

tsu lost to AAMU and won the tsu vs JSU game by one point in overtime, and still you all competed in your conference for the championship. Former Maplewood star still battles ankle injury

Former Maplewood receiver Jonathan Moore, who was making a bid for a starting assignment on Tennessee State's offense, was injured worse than previously believed.
Moore still hasn't practiced since suffering a severe ankle sprain last week. The injury kept Moore out of TSU's first scrimmage last Saturday and will likely keep him out of the second one, which is tonight at Hale Stadium.
Moore was a top candidate to fill the slot-receiver position vacated by Mike Mason, last year's starter.
"Jonathan's got a worse injury than we thought, and we're not really sure when he'll be back," Coach James Webster said. "It's not going to require surgery or anything like that, but it's a bad ankle sprain. He's a wide receiver, and those guys have got to make cuts and everything, and he's just not able to make cuts right now. He was doing a great job before he got hurt."
With Moore sidelined, along with sophomore Troy Smith (6 catches for 45 yards in 2006), who also has an ankle injury, two transfers are battling for the first team spot.
Ronald Evans, a transfer from Mississippi State, and Kwame Patrick, a transfer from Alabama-Birmingham, have impressed the coaches.
"Evans and Patrick are doing a really good job, now that it's down to those two guys," Webster said. "With the two kids (Smith and Moore) we were counting on at the start of practice out, these two guys are getting their chance.''
Expecting more: Webster wants a better effort in today's 6 p.m. scrimmage. He had some choice words after last Saturday's scrimmage.
"I'm embarrassed. ? If we were playing a game tonight, the outcome would not be pretty," Webster said. "There was no intensity or enthusiasm. ? You better believe that we (coaches) are going to work you harder on intensity and execution to have you ready for our opening game. We can't beat Alabama A&M, or any team for that matter with the effort you showed."
Moving practice: The start of practice will move from 6 p.m. to 4 p.m. next Tuesday, which is when classes begin. Practices were moved to later in the day to avoid the heat.
Divens impresses: Defensive tackle Lamar Divens is still recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him the first week of camp.

Tennessee State is all set at quarterback spot

Tennessee State football coach James Webster has his concerns as training camp enters its third week. Various key backup spots on both sides of the ball are still up for grabs. Webster and his staff must decide which freshmen to play and which to redshirt for the upcoming season. The wide receiving corps is still depleted because of several lingering issues.
But for all the questions Webster must answer, one of them is not the quarterback position. Junior South Carolina transfer Antonio Heffner enters his second year at the helm of the Tigers with a full head of steam.
Although Heffner sprained the ring finger on his right throwing hand on Sunday, he appears to be on the inside track to a breakout season.
?I?m expecting big things this year, especially winning an [Ohio Valley Conference] championship and going to the playoffs,? Heffner said.
Webster and Heffner both agree that playing under offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss for the second year in a row will be beneficial. Heffner feels like he has the playbook down pat.
?I don?t know about opening up the offense, but in terms of the plays we can run and the audibles we can put in, it?s helpful,? Webster said. ?I?m seeing a young man who?s more mature and more comfortable with himself in the offense.?
Heffner must cut down on his interceptions ? he threw 11 last year versus nine touchdowns.
"Sometimes being a leader means taking what the defense gives you and letting the game come to you,? Heffner said.
But Heffner isn?t the only reason Webster feels better about the quarterback position. Julian Sample, the top returning backup from last season and one of the team?s best athletes, has been moved to a hybrid athlete/wide receiver role because two true freshmen have stepped up to provide depth.
Calvin McNairl was one of Webster?s most highly touted signees and currently he?s the second-string quarterback.
But late signee and training camp arrival Zachary Motley, who comes from Lake Charles, Ill., has been the talk of camp lately. Motley stood out in the Blue-White scrimmage on Saturday.
?He had a lot of people buzzing about him after his performance on Saturday,? Webster said.
Heffner said he would find out today whether the injury to his finger was serious, although he didn?t suspect he would miss any meaningful time. He practiced during the team?s evening session on Monday and said he thought the injury was ?just a bruise.? CP

The Tennessee State coaching staff couldn?t decide what to do with Julian Sample after the ultra-talented and equally versatile athlete moved from defensive back to back up quarterback Antonio Heffner last year.
The staff didn?t know if it should leave Sample at QB, running back or wide receiver. It decided not to decide.
The only thing Sample won?t do this season is move back to defense. Unless, of course, the defense winds up needing help in the secondary.
Coach James Webster promises Sample will see action at all three positions on offense - QB, running back and receiver - in an array of packages designed specifically for him.
?He is a true slash,'? Webster said. The smile on Webster?s face is very telling. He is happy to have such an outstanding athlete at his disposal.
?We?re going to get him on the field and get the ball in his hands a number of different ways,'? Webster said.
Sample?s multiple skills should help TSU?s offense take another step forward after making lots of improvement last year.

The talented wide receiver wasted no time making a big impact on the Tigers coaching staff.
?He?s conducted himself like a senior since the day he arrived on campus,'? said strength and conditioning coach Chuck Losey.
Moore was commited to the off-season workout program and jumped right into the mix in the wide receiver rotation once camp got underway.
Heading into TSU?s first scirmmage last Saturday, however, Moore went down with a sprained ankle.
?I don?t think it?s a serious sprain, but it?s serious enough to keep him out of the scrimmage,'? said Coach James Webster.
Moore is expected back this week and with the work ethic he already has demonstrated the time away won?t likely hurt his chances for playing early in his career.

"Our practices have been very good." says Webster. "I have been pleased with the positive attitude and work ethic our players have shown so far in preseason drills." He continued saying, "It all began with the players reporting to camp in good physical shape. I have preached that championships are won in the off-season, with conditioning. The players have responded and come back this season ready to play."
Webster's comments on several offensive players who have performed well so far in drills;
- Cecil Newton (offensive lineman), "Has been the star of camp, he is the leader of our linemen and is working hard in that role."
- Antonio Heffner (quarterback), "Continues to show his grasp of the offense. His steady play and leadership continues to bolster the offensive attack."
- Javarris Williams (running back), "Came to camp in tremendous shape and is running hard in all our drills."
On defensive - Webster comments, "We need to get stronger up front (on the line) and get good play from our linebackers." Webster's comments on several other players;
-Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (cornerback), "Dom has shown he worked hard in the off-season to be ready to play at a high level this year."
-Larry Williford (defensive back), "I have been very pleased with his play and his leadership. He is showing that he wants to get that good playing time this year."
- Reno Thompson (defensive back), "Reno has shown a high level of leadership, so far in drills."
Special Teams - "We have quite a bit of work to do on special teams." says Webster. "Our place kicking is manned by a veteran (Eric Benson), but our punting is falling into the hands of true freshman Taylor Cisneros (Mt. Juliet HS). Cisneros is also our holder, which is a tough situation for a freshman to be in." Webster concluded, saying "Our coverage game should be better, because we have better athletes, with speed, on our coverage teams this year."
On the freshman class - "When you sign freshmen, you really don't know what you have until they get into camp," said Webster. Fast running back wins job at TSU

Javarris Williams, Tennessee State's preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference running back, has been bumped from the Tigers' first team by sophomore Terrence Wright.
Wright, a speedster from Houston, will start when TSU faces Alabama A&M in the Sept. 1 opener at LP Field in the John Merritt Classic, Coach James Webster said.
Webster on Wednesday said the switch was not an indication that Williams had performed poorly in the preseason, but that Wright had been exceptional.
Last season, Webster threatened to take Williams off the first team after Williams reported to preseason camp out of condition.
"I've always said you earn your starting position every day," Webster said. "Nothing is given, and I feel at this point in camp that T. Wright has earned the right to be a starter. That's not saying that Javarris hasn't worked hard, because he has worked hard. Javarris reported in better shape than he ever has. He's worked hard in practice, and he's done everything that we asked him to do."
Up for grabs
Williams, a junior who is third on TSU's all-time rushing list with 2,105 yards, gained 1,233 yards on 245 attempts and scored 12 touchdowns last year.
Wright finished third on the team with 86 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Most of Wright's playing time came late in the season.
Williams said he was taking the change in stride.
"Competition is always good," Williams said. "(Wright) came in and has had a pretty good camp. It's just pushing me to work that much harder."
Wright said he has had his eye on the starting position since he arrived at TSU last year, even though Williams already appeared to be entrenched.
"Being moved to the starting team makes me feel like the work that I've been putting in has paid off," Wright said.
Not the same
Wright, who played in seven games last year, said he and Williams have different running styles.
"The difference is obvious," Wright said. "He's more of a power back but he has good feet, too. I'm more of a speedy back, a slash type that likes to get out into the open field, take it to the sidelines and score."
Williams, realizing Wright's talents, envisioned sharing the duties with Wright.
"I wouldn't mind if I get the ball for a few carries and he gets it like 10 or 15 carries ? that works for me," Williams said. "We have different running styles and that can make it hard on defenses we play against."
The switch, Wright said, has not put a strain on his relationship with Williams.
"We have a brotherly love type of relationship because he's from Richmond, Texas, and I'm from Houston," Wright said. "We're like brothers. He looks out for me, and I look out for him on and off the field."

Up for grabs
Williams, a junior who is third on TSU's all-time rushing list with 2,105 yards, gained 1,233 yards on 245 attempts and scored 12 touchdowns last year.
Wright finished third on the team with 86 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Most of Wright's playing time came late in the season.
Williams said he was taking the change in stride.
"Competition is always good," Williams said. "(Wright) came in and has had a pretty good camp. It's just pushing me to work that much harder."
Wright said he has had his eye on the starting position since he arrived at TSU last year, even though Williams already appeared to be entrenched.
"Being moved to the starting team makes me feel like the work that I've been putting in has paid off," Wright said.
Not the same
Wright, who played in seven games last year, said he and Williams have different running styles.
"The difference is obvious," Wright said. "He's more of a power back but he has good feet, too. I'm more of a speedy back, a slash type that likes to get out into the open field, take it to the sidelines and score."
Williams, realizing Wright's talents, envisioned sharing the duties with Wright.
"I wouldn't mind if I get the ball for a few carries and he gets it like 10 or 15 carries ? that works for me," Williams said. "We have different running styles and that can make it hard on defenses we play against."
The switch, Wright said, has not put a strain on his relationship with Williams.
"We have a brotherly love type of relationship because he's from Richmond, Texas, and I'm from Houston," Wright said. "We're like brothers. He looks out for me, and I look out for him on and off the field."

Ummm... some of those articles are really contradicting where the coach said that the players showed up in condition. Maybe, I'm just reading it wrong, but when you threaten to move a player because he showed up out of shape, I thought that meant he was not in condition. :noidea:
Whoever is writing this stuff needs to be evaluated.

TSU is behind everyone and came in out of shape. You have no receivers so It will be a heavy dose of run and srambling by your QB. Oh Well you can recover from an 0-2 start.

Four transfers make a quick impact on TSU defense

Four transfers have made it to the first-team defense and will start for Tennessee State when the Tigers open the season Saturday at LP Field. They will face Alabama A&M in the John Merritt Classic.
Sophomore cornerback Marquez Hall, who transferred from Vanderbilt, began working with the first-team unit during the first week of practice and has been a staple throughout camp.
More recently, Kellen Woodard, a linebacker who transferred from Western Michigan last season, has moved to defensive end, where he will start on the opposite side of veteran Shaun Richardson.
Harold Ayodele, a transfer from Coffeyville Community College, has moved into a starting spot at nose tackle, and Ramone Willis, a transfer from Illinois, has jumped ahead of last year's starting linebacker Kalvin Baker.
The emergence of Woodard and the arrival of Ayodele in preseason camp helped to relieve some concerns of the coaching staff about a defensive front that lost three starters.
"Woodard has gotten a lot stronger, he's gotten a lot more physical, he's gotten more aggressive, and he's shown really good intelligence," said Coach James Webster.
"Last year we had him between end and linebacker so he never really got to a chance to settle in. This fall camp we put him at one position and kept him at that one position, and it's been good for him."
Richardson is the only returning starter on the line.
Lamar Divens, who started the first three games before being ruled ineligible, will be the other starter at tackle.
Former Antioch star Mark Drew has moved from linebacker to defensive end, where he is backing up Woodard.
Willis caught the attention of the staff at the start of camp, which helped him move ahead of Baker, who was the team's leading tackler before being injured toward the end of last season.
"Willis has emerged as a leader for us," Webster said. "He was a starter for Illinois. He's got really good speed, excellent athletic ability, and he's a good hitter. He's added a positive dimension to our defense."
Moore out: Freshman receiver Jonathan Moore from Maplewood, who was working with the first team, is not expected to play Saturday because of a sprained ankle. Moore has not been able to practice at full-speed since the injury two weeks ago.
New practice time: After starting afternoon practice at 6 p.m. through training camp, the Tigers will begin today at 4 p.m. Classes began Monday and there was no practice.

Kalvin Baker was a prized transfer last year with a couple of schools fighting for hime (JSU and SCState included). Now he is second string. I think that TNState will have the better offense and defense in this game but the offensive playcalling on behalf of TNState is gonna give AAMU the win.

I gotta give A&M credit, they might not have as much talent (according to TP) as JSU & TnSU but they have won the last two meeting against both teams.

Honestly do you think TP knows how much "talent" each SWAC team has? What is he going off of, high school stats, pride, etc? There is no way you can tell who has the "most talent" ESPECIALLY in the SWAC before the season starts.

Jones says Bulldogs may resemble '04 team
Alabama A&M coach Anthony Jones says his team reminds him a lot of the one he had in 2004.
That year, Jones started a number of younger players for the first time in the season opener against Tennessee State and the Tigers whipped the Bulldogs 42-7. Two years later, that group helped A&M win the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

"In 2004, we went up there and played a lot of freshmen ... a lot of new guys," Jones recalled. "I'm just hoping (the game) doesn't end up the same way."
TSU running back Charles Anthony shredded A&M's defense for more than 200 yards that night.
A&M will play approximately 20 newcomers Saturday night in Nashville against the Tigers.
"This is definitely a youth movement," Jones said. "We're going to play a lot of new guys for the first time. They're going to get their first taste of action against a very good football team in a high-profile setting.
"That's the similarity for me. We'll just have to look at it and see."
Scrimmage shorter: A&M was forced to shorten its final mock scrimmage Saturday night because of heavy rain, thunder and lightning. As a result, Jones said he wouldn't put much stock in it.
"It was too short to make a fair assessment," he said. "I'm not going to put much on it, but there are some things we're going to work on from that."
Even had the scrimmage gone well, Jones said, his team still wouldn't have been ready to play.
"We're not going to be ready to play until we step on that field," he said. "Everything has its place, and we're trying to put everything in place."

Once again its not like SWAC teams are filled with All Americans who we have read about in sports publications the entire year... I just dont see how you can evaluate "talent" before the season starts...
Was Johnny Baldwin and Robert Mathis considered talented before they got to AAMU? Look where they are now. Didnt Robert "Superman" Kent, your "talented" quarterback get cut from the Alabama (Birmingham) Steeldogs this past year?
