"Those were the days"

In the 70's there was a hit comedy sitcom called "All In The Family" with a lead character named "Archie Bunker". ( I corrected myself)
Archie was a white guy who grew up in a time (40's & 50's) when racism and stereotypes were the norm.
The show was based on how he adapted to the present time (1970's) with blacks, women rights and other social issues had become more liberal.
Well, while researching another subject, I came across this Football game newspaper preview from an article written OCT 16, 1937.

Archie Bunker's Father must have wrote the article.

A Baton Rouge newspaper writer previewed a game between Southern U. and Langston U. that might decide the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

The story written in 1937 contains elements such as segregation and black athletic stereotypes.

Remember, during that time in the South, black athletes were not allowed to attend LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, or Ole Miss football teams. If you were a white person and wanted to see that level of an athlete, you had to attend an HBCU game in your area.

I have the ENTIRE SPORTS PAGE DOWNLOADED AS AN ATTACHED FILE
You can open it up and view the sport highlights of OCT. 16, 1937 (White Baton Rouge style,)

Billy Cannon said as a kid his dad took him to SU games all the time.
When asked who was his favorite player growing up his answer was SU running back Odie Posey
I heard him say that on a interview also. He said that was the best player he ever saw. And he also said that was the most talented teams he had ever saw. The interviewer, on a pro Lsu show didn't like his answer lol.

Hey, the SU fan comes out of me from time to time too.(LOL)
But, seriously, the Historical significance of these pieces are to highlight all the former SWAC teams and to show the public that the SWAC didn't start yesterday.
That game featured 2 of the best teams (SU & JSU), in the country regardless of what level/division of college football.

The SWAC's legacy in the college sports world is unmatched with it's level of athletes through the years.
That Southern team could beat its peers at the time including LSU, Tulane, ULL(new name), LA Tech.
JSU's team could beat Ole Miss, Miss. State, USM at that time.
Point being is that I get tired of listening the Fans (black & white) of those schools talk down on the SWAC's level of athletes when they are the SWAC now. They followed our blueprint because when Jackson State plays Miss State, it's just like looking in the mirror some 20 years earlier.

I will pull out an article during a debate and ask them to show me their version of Robert "Speedy" Williams in 1958 and they can't, because Robert wasn't allowed on their campus.
The ORIGINAL POWER FIVE (Conferences with the Top college athletes in the world) was the SWAC, SIAC, CIAA and help me out?????, a few more.
BUT, just like the WU TANG CLAN's song title "CREAM" Cash Rules Everthing Around Me, too many people worship the mighty dollar.

I couldn't agree more with your analysis. It baffles me as well when I hear fans disprove or discount our schools when we have a long lineage and heritage that is being overlooked because of the CREAM. I see you are the historian. Keep up the great work

we started taking payoffs and PWCs got smart and offered HBCU grad black coaches spots on their staffs a token job which was to babysit and recruit black players, sadly enough, those guys never was going to rise up the ranks and they remained career assistants when they could've been the next legendary HBCU coach

or in some cases, northern blacks who went to school in Michigan, etc. when the south refused to let them play had an inferiority complex that they were better than HBCU players at the time when HBCUs easily had better talent...

Huh? Just say you hate JSU and call it a day bro you're not making any sense by saying we don't compare
Huh what?! Yes u right i dont like jackson state! How does jackson state compare to Southern Goodfella tell me lets c if u know your history?
