You're painting with a pretty broad brush there.

From that thread, the only one to really say anything objectionable is "longtimepoke". He was rebutted and rebuffed by others. In fact, a lot more support the cancellation than have complained about it.

To say everybody there is a bunch of a-holes is a bit much.

There's dysfunction in every family, and I'd be hardpressed to think the majority of the McNeese faithful share the same one-sided views of some. Don't let the thoughts a few ruin what's left of your happiness.

Believe me I won't.

NICE

That fool actually posted that other schools should reorganize their schedules to accomodate a future SU/mcneese game.
:smh::smh:

damn!

I think you can take it as a mark of respect that some of the folks on the McNeese message board want to play Southern so badly that they'll go to the extent of looking up other schedules to see what could, or couldn't be done to get the game rescheduled.

It has the makings of a very nice series...I think most of the die hard McNeese fans would like to see the Pokes line up against the Jaguars or Grambling every year...

Beyond that, people cope with stress and tragedy in different ways. After the way the original contract issue was handled a few years back, I think it's understandable that some people might be looking for an ulterior motive in the cancellation. It doesn't mean that they're right, it just means that to a certain degree, the sentiment is understandable.

It's like some of the messages on this board earlier complaining that McNeese had only sent Southern 2,000 tickets. That's exactly the number that Southern sent McNeese last year. While we understand that Southern travels incredibly well, there was no disrespect intended toward the Jaguar Nation with only sending that many tickets, it was exactly the same number Southern sent to McNeese.

The people who thought that McNeese was jacking with Southern weren't correct, though to a degree their sentiments were understandable.

Anyway, that's my two-cents on the issue. Let's pray for everybody who suffered a loss due to the Hurricane and let's hope the series gets renewed. It's good for both programs....

This just goes to show what respect non-HBCUs have for us. None, but they still want that PAY DAY. Not suprised, but I wouldn't call all of them a-holes.

lol & smh @ dude actually having the gall to suggest SWAC teams (who ain't got isht to do with them) to move our games around JUST to accomodate their game with SU. This seems so Jacksonville Statish. :shame:

Exactly!

And who's to say that other schools who were not affected by Hurricane Katrina would want to revamp their schedule just to appease SU and msu fans.

Are you serious? Mark of disrespect is more like it.

No, I think it shows some respect for the program. Ordinarily, we wouldn't care if a game got cancelled, but when you're talking about a game with another program, in the same state, with the history of Southern, then I see it as a mark of respect...

Inquiring if other games could be moved isn't a sign of disrespect. Hell, that's the only way the game could get rescheduled outside of trying to play it next year...

Also, you have to understand that most Non-SWAC fans probably think that Grambling and Southern are the only two SWAC schools to have a huge fan base. Most folks just don't understand what a cultural event SWAC games are at some schools and the problems that rescheduling would present. They probably have a tendancy to view games between schools other than Grambling and Southern like SLC fans would view games between Sam Houston State and Texas State or between Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana. There generally wouldn't be that big of a problem with rescheduling those games because they're not very well attended.

Again, I don't think those posts were as much a sign of disrespect as an indication that perhaps not everybody who follows I-AA football is as knowledgeable about crowd sizes, etc., in the SWAC.

It's a perception issue, not a respect issue....

I think the thing that you are losing sight of is right now, Southernites and most sane people DGAF. That game is the last thing on most people minds right now. Do you know that people cannot be found right now, loss of life is a reality among other catastropic things? At the moment no one really gives a shat about anyones respect or perception.......DAMN!

I understand that everybody is stressed and if your method for dealing with stress is to imagine that everybody who doesn't see things exactly like you do is "the biggest bunch of assholes on the planet" then I certainly understand that. Nobody is going to hold that against you.

Beyond that, I understand what you're saying. The original McNeese response to the cancellation might seem a bit insensitive. There was no mention of Southern being adversely affected by the storm prior to the cancellation, so it came as a shock to McNeese fans.

None of the posts I've seen ANYTHING to diminish the scope of the tragedy in southeast Louisiana. I don't think any institution or any group of fans has an inside lock on the "best claim to the tragedy." It pretty much affects everybody equally. Many folks from MSU have family in harm's way down there, and we're all going to know or be related to people who lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods, etc.

Beyond that, there was little, if any discussion about how the storm had affected either team until the cancellation.

Perhaps if there'd been widespread news coverage about the adverse affects of the storm and how Southern was coping, the reactions would have been more "compassionate."

In any event, the game's not going to be made this year, we should turn our attention to helping with the relief effort and we should pray for those who were adversely affected. The rest of this is just a waste of time....

The impact of this tragedy is also being felt by AAMU players from Gulfport, New Orleans and other cities. This is not about football we have a crisis to deal with.

:lecture: Lets say for sake of conversation, that Katrina never happened......and an SU game against any swac/meac/HBCU got cancelled and the only way to reschedule would be for McNease or a similar school to agree on a change of their schedules?!! Would you do it? You'd probably stop reading on the part: SU game against another HBCU got canceled.

SU is one of my biggest rivals but they are still my swac brothers :nod2: And we both have love ones in that area. Even if I didn't have close people in that area....this is still America's problem. If affects all of us. F**K a game. This is serious?? If your parent/grandparent/sibling was caught in the storm and your girlfriend still wanted you to take her out to the movies.....would you still go or reschedule? Thats what I thought. SU prevail on....my support goes out to YOU GRAM, LSU and everyone else in this tragedy.....

FYI.....mutha FCKAs sent millions to the Tsunami vicims over in India............I'll be damned if anyone from the LA., MIss., should suffer!!! Some of "you people" talk that shat, now lets see you back it up. Damn a game, take care of your own people.....after all were all American? If you disagree, ask BIN Laden....he'll be glad to show you. Put you energy from wanting a game into helping these people regain their life!!!!

Taken from Baton Rouge Advocate

Southern has 20 players, along with three others from areas in Mississippi affected by the storm, on its roster. That doesn't include walk-ons or nonqualifers on campus. McNeese has 12 players from the New Orleans area.

During a Tuesday morning walkthrough, SU wide receiver Emile Bryant, from Higgins High in Westwego, paced under an upright slightly bent by Katrina in the south end zone, as he tried to reach family members on his cell phone.

SU punter Colby Miller, from Covington, and his girlfriend, from Lacombe, said he spent Monday night sleeping in his truck while trying to get back home to survey the damage at family members' homes.

According to the Lake Charles American-Press, McNeese tailback Steven Whitehead of Slidell, as of Tuesday afternoon, could not get in touch with his parents, who had chosen to ride out the hurricane.

If FEMA and the powers that be were letting the general public into New Orleans to help with evacuation and water abatement efforts, I'd say, yeah, stop everything, let's all get to New Orleans....

Since that's NOT happening and won't be happening anytime soon, I think the best thing we can all do is pray, make monetary donations and go about our normal lives until such time as we can actually get down there and make a difference. If you don't see it that way, fine. You deal with it your way, I'll deal with it in mine.

I'm leaving for the area next week, to help assess damage to buildings in those areas where they'll let us in. Until then, there's nothing I can do other than what's mentioned above...

You're free to deal with the tragedy in the way you see fit. That's not the only way, however....

Lecture all you want, but realize that most of what you've posted consists of little more than venting at a convenient target because the storm's magnitude makes you feel impotent. That's a natural reaction. If venting at McNeese for wanting to explore ways to make the game helps you deal with this, then fine. Vent away.

It's probably healthy for you to have that outlet...

Can it be that SU fans who purchased season ticket books FROM McNeese will now ask for refunds? Or is it that 2,000 tickets (SU allotment) will have to be refunded as well? Think about it this way, if it was SU's home game do you feel SU would still cancel this game. I feel in my heart that they would. Can you please be real with yourself and just admit the fact that "some" of the McNeese fans are ONLY concerned with getting their largest payday of the year back on the schedule? For you to try and defend it doesn't make you look any better.

This is sad. You are right, this is just a waste of time.

McNeese's largest "payday" will probably be the Southern Mississippi game, along with home games against traditional rival Northwestern.

The Southern game would definitely be the best sellling home game this year, but the additional money we'd make over a normal home game won't be on the order of what we'd make at Southern Mississippi....

Obviously, you've got your mind made up about the motivation behind some of the message board posts. Other than what I've outlined, what -exactly - can you do to make the situation in New Orleans and along the coast better?

I know first hand what a cancelled home game with SU does to a budget. UAPB was in the same boat last year. We depended on game day reciepts to support our budget, and when that game didn't happen, it almost brought our program completely under. From a financial standpoint, I surely understand where MSU is coming from. However, this is a different situation. This game is far less important that the current crisis.

Not having SU visit PB last year did reverse wonders for our program. The best thing is that season tickets sales went up so much that SU or any other team doesn't have to come and it won't affect us.

FrmrPokeCntr,

If SU doesn't want to play the game just based on, "it just wouldn't feel right playing this game" from SU should be enough for McNeese. But to entertain your question, I've got friends and in-laws (some we're trying to call emergency help for) stuck in N.O. Not only that but I'm not even affiliated with SU, and I've got my own family down in Mobile to worry about. It's not just N.O. that has been messed up. If I was in Baton Rouge with any family member stuck, you better believe I would be constantly trying to ensure theirs and others safety by getting as close to N.O. as possible. Not just that, but these people would need a place to stay. F*** A GAME.

So you don't think, reading schit like, "they're using the hurricane as an excuse not to play," or "they're happy they're not going to take this buttwhippin" as seeing it as something other than what it is? Face it man, some of your McNeese folk just don't care! Let's play the game, and everything will be right with the world. Man please, I just can't see disappointment in any of those words. Especially when you have clowns talking about 300k will now be missing out of their budget, because this game won't be played. Yeah, they really care.

I guess LSU is just so afraid to play North Texas that they decided to cancel their game as well.....oh that's right, they're happy because they get to finish construction on their stadium, and don't have to refund about a thousand people any ticket money. :shame:

NICE

McNeese isn't "coming from" anywhere....A few posters were dissapointed that the game didn't get made. That's the extent of it.

Nobody is suggesting that the game is more important than the relief efforts.

You are making a very big generalization and painting all the McNeese fans with a very large brush using the comments of a couple of McNeese fans (especially the guy LongtimePoke). I think most of us realize now what is more important and are trying to do whatever we can for the people affected by the disaster.
