The SCG could move up





Is it possible to use a little common sense to have the SWAC title game the week after the regular season is over, before the FCS playoffs start? I don't understand why the fans and players have to wait three weeks for a title game to be played, and the winner does not participate in the playoffs/bowl game?

It looks really bush league to be the last team in all of college football to crown it's conference champion. Granted, the game is on ESPN, but so is the FCS title game, the D2 and D3 title game. So, the SWAC is not really doing anything special by holding the players and fans hostage for three weeks.

Even if they moved it up, which they should, it would still be too late for the SWAC to participate in the playoffs. But there is a proposal to expand the playoffs to 18 teams and that might make a difference.

Why would it still be too late for the SWAC to participate in the playoffs even if the SGC was moved to an earlier date?

Let's be honest, isn't it a little retarded that the FCS champion is crowned before an FCS conference champion is crowned?

Because the playoffs start the same week of the Bayou Classic. We have to be finished with our games before the start of the playoffs for the SWAC Champion to be eligible. Your right, it is retarded.

I completely understand that the Bayou Classic is a large money maker for SU/GU and N.O., but why do the other 8 teams in the conference have to be restricted from postseason play due that single game? I don't understand the logic.

I know you don't work in the SWAC office, but you seem to know more about this than I do, so would it be possible for the conference to start the season earlier or move the games up?

Because Southern and Grambling don't care about the playoffs because they have the Classic and I can understand that from their financial standpoint. It doesn't help JSU a bit. The bamas don't care because they have never been anyway. Alabama State has the Turkey Day Classic, which makes them ineligible. So that leaves Jackson State and five others out in the cold. What else is new? I don't see the SWAC changing it. I don't see the Bayou Classic moving. So fans like me and you have to settle for a championship game that leads to nothing. It doesn't have to be that way
but this is the SWAC. :smh:
 
It is possible to move up the games, but Southern and Grambling have said they are against moving the date of the Bayou Classic. So that puts you back at square one.
 
The SCG has all but killed the chance of SWAC schools to participate in the playoffs. Before the implementation of the game you had all schools eligible for an at-large bid except SU and Gram because of the BC. So it was still possible that if the SWAC champ during that time wasn't SU or Gram, you had a good chance for them to receive a bid. As it stands now, the only people eligible are schools other than SU, Gram, Bama St., and the participants in the SCG. So all that leaves is the Second place finisher in the East, and possibly the Second or maybe the Third place finisher in the West. That's hard as hell to receive an at-large.

I have always said I don't believe the revenue generated from the SCG is large enough to really make a difference for our schools. Remember, the profit has to be split among 10 schools.
 
The game should be 2 weeks after Thanksgiving weekend.

This is not for grambling and southern, but helps all schools. Remember, su and gsu are not the only schools to play after thanksgiving. bama state regularly plays on thx-gvn and this year tx su played u of h on the saturday.

with the schedules increasing to 12 games, more teams may look into playing thxgivn weekend. plus an extra week gives a conference time to promote the game(:lmao:) and students and supporters, fans, etc. to prepare and go to the game. not to mention, if an unfortunate obstacles that may occur...see 2001, 2004, and 2005 seasons.

2 weeks after thanksgiving weekend.
 
How can some y'all be this ignorant having been on this board awhile and not know that the SWAC championship game has nothing to do with you sorry Azz team going to the playoffs?

If any team has played well enough and happen to be ranked high enough at the end of the season, that team is as much eligible for the payoffs game as any other.

The only schools that eliminate themselves from this is *SU/SU and the teams that make the championship game.

On top of that it looks like some of you have real poor understanding.

The long stretch between the regular-season finales and the championship has been a sore subject in Birmingham, prompting interim commissioner Duer Sharp to answer plenty of questions. He explained that in the past Alabama high school championship games held inside Legion Field had forced the conference to wait to host the game. That wasn't an issue this year, but the SWAC was already locked into the previously agreed upon Dec. 15 date.

Sharp did point our there is a plus-minus to the situation.

"We're going to look to move it up next year," Sharp said. "If we can get it OK'd by Legion Field, it'll be the weekend after (the) Bayou (Classic).

"If you're banged up you want it. If you're playing at your peak, you want to play the next weekend. It's a double-edged sword. To me, I think it heightens the (anticipation)."

There isn't a D1 conference in the world that plays a championship game immediately after the last game of the season. Common sense dictate better judgement.

12 games? Just next year. It's one of those years where the calendar falls right to allow FCS teams that option.

No 12 games for FCS squads. It was voted down...

If SWAC teams do look to play Thanksgiving weekend, they would be playing each other as the rest of the FCS community is in the playoffs and that weekend is typically reserved for rivalry games at the FBS level. Would the SWAC want even more games on a weekend typically reserved for the Bayou Classic?
 
This game has nothing to do with the playoffs at all, the conferance could care less about being in that (at this time). This game is all about economics and it being our own little bowl game. That is why it is at the time that it is scheduled for in December, nothing else.
