Will you go see this movie? Do you feel this movie will lead to increased anti-semitism?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mel Gibson said the graphic depiction of Christ's crucifixion in his upcoming film The Passion of the Christ was meant to make viewers realize the extent of Christ's sacrifice.

"I think it pushes one over the edge so that they see the enormity, the enormity of that sacrifice," he said during an interview with Diane Sawyer for ABC's Primetime that airs Monday.

Gibson, who funded, directed and co-wrote the upcoming movie, said he wanted the movie to be shocking and extreme.

"It's very violent and if you don't like it, don't go, you know?" Gibson said in excerpts of the interview provided by ABC. "If you want to leave halfway through, go ahead."

The R-rated movie, set for release Feb. 25, details the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus. Gibson maintains it's a faithful biblical narrative, but some worry that its depiction of the role of some Jews in the death of Christ may lead to an increase in anti-Semitism.

...

Yes, I will see this movie. When it comes out on DVD, I will buy it and show it to my church congregation on a Sunday night.

No, I don't think this will lead to an increase in anti-semitism. Yes, there will be some extremists who, in their stupidity, will point their fingers at the Jewish people because they don't bother to READ their Bibles. The same thing occurs when with some Jewish extremists when movies are released about the German Holocost and with Blacks when there is a depiction of Euro-American slavery and oppression.

Entertainment like this always pulls on deep-seated feelings. It is unavoidable. Feelings are not right or wrong; it what we do about them that is right or wrong.

My only concern is how scripturally accurate it is. I say this because, there will be viewers who may be unlearned regarding the Bible that may think that every account given in the movie is the exact way everything happened during this time in Christ's life. The Bible itself doesn't give an account of every conversation or incident that happened so I think that movies need to sell tickets and they are made for entertainment purposes first and foremost. I'm not downplaying Mel Gibson's intellect on theology or his zeal for his faith. I just think that there may be some inaccuracies.

Well, Springs it says it details the last 12 hours of his life. I'm sure there will be some inaccuracies because the Bible doesn't cover EVERY second of His life. I hope Mel has done his research. All in all, I think it will allow people to see the "realness" of Christ's suffering. We've read about His crucifixion but, I think seeing the depiction will be life changing for some.

I'll co-sign what Fortitude wrote and add this:

It is a MOVIE and not a DOCUMENTARY. One thing that troubles me about the general public when it comes to historical subjects like this is that they want to argue about the authenticity of the depictions. There was no videotape running during the Civil War let alone during the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

It won't be perfect. I think the problem that a lot people have with this film is that it will come closer to depicting how brutal the trial was and what crucifixion was like than any of its predecessors. The ironic thing is that the general public has takes little exception to such graphic renderings in things that are purely fictional but nearly come unglued when it comes to those figures that actually lived.

Both my parents were in WW2. I had uncles in Korea and cousins in Vietnam. All of them chuckled when they watched war movies because they were never violent enough. I wonder what they would have thought of "Saving Private Ryan".

Go figure.

In my post I even said that the Bible does not record every conversation or incident. "D" you just supported what I was saying in that it is a movie and not a documnetary. Movies need to sell tickets. The sufferings of Christ during the last 24 hours are up to the interpretation of the presenter. As with any presentation. I never said this version is right nor wrong. Didn't I say I had a concern ? Are you two telling me that I am wrong for having a concern ? Even seeing that I didn't bash the movie or Mel in my statements ?

I'm agreeing - there will be inaccuracies. Your first statement was, "My only concern is how scripturally accurate it is." We both agree, that the Bible doesn't cover EVERY second of Christ's life. Now., on the part about the movie, "...are made for entertainment purposes first and foremost" - I add that I hope someone's life will change(for the better to the Glory of God) after having viewed the movie.

I think we are both agreeing with you...Just expanding on your thoughts a bit.

To be direct: No, I don't think that it will lead to increased anti-Semitism. The extremists will always go that route but the general public will not view this as a presentation of "murder by the Jews". After all Jesus of Nazareth was not Christian; He was Christ of Jews and Gentiles.

I'll be in line to see it. I agree that people wanting to use this as some sort of anti-semetic trite will be sorely mistaken.

The Jews are upset because this movie shows a graphic account of the suffering that Jesus went through for our redemption. The Jews had a chance to keep this from happening when Pilate ask them who did they want him to release. They said, "Release Barrabus, and crucify Jesus!"

Movies today don't want to show the real torture that Jesus went through because they don't want to upset certain religious groups. But you can rest assured that this one will open some people eyes. I personally will not make an effort to go and see it because it really upsets me to see those nail spikes being put through his hands. When and if it is aired on regular TV, then maybe I will watch it.

But I'm glad he didn't come down from that cross! Where would I be if he had!

Like Mel Gibson said, "If it bothers you, don't go see it!" ;)

What are your thoughts on young children seeing this movie? I have not seen any trailers yet, so I don't know how graphic it is going to be.

When the Jesus movie came on TV we watched it together and they were very interested, and it opened up a lot of questions for them.

What do you think?

This movie has an 'R' rating. The graphics may be a little too intense for younger children.

But if you feel your kids can handle it, and if it will answer some questions they may have, it may not be so bad. Maybe you should view it first, and that will give you a better perspective on whether or not your kids could handle it. :)

I did not even notice the rating. I'll look at it first and determine if they can handle it. I don't want them to be frightened.

Yes, i will see this movie. I think the graphic scenes in it will only strengthen the conviction of believers and give others a reason to stop and think. There won't be an increase in anti-semtic activity...at least among intelligent people.

Exactly. It's not anti-Semitism. It's the Truth. Besides, the people who put Jesus through the actual torture and death were the Romans. But they're both just representatives for ALL OF US.

Sometimes I hear preachers and songs try to relate to us how much PAIN Jesus went through for us. He was sinless, but he took on all of our sin and the physical pain of the world. This wasn't just an easy death and resurrection; Jesus SUFFERED much so we wouldn't have to. I think this movie is very relevant to a world today who doesn't seem to realize how real and painful the suffering of Christ was. The movie certainly isn't a must-see, as there are plenty of accurate Jesus films. But I think Gibson is showing how shocking a sacrifice Jesus made to a world that craves shock value.

Speak Kevdawg!! *clapping hands in agreement*

Couldn't have said it better myself.

ALL OF US are responsible for his death because he died for US.

Being thankful for his sufferings is what bridges that gap.

This world is in dire need of a 'shock value'!

I'm going to see it tomorrow (if I can get in).
Personally, I don't see what the big deal is!

Christ came to do a job, who pulled the string is really
Irrelevant since the entire thing was controlled by God.

Races of people play roles in the world....the Jews were a
tool of God to send Jesus to his crusifxtion. Period.
What is wrong with saying that?

If I was Jewish I would be proud of it. I would also point out
that Jesus was a Jew, and use it to explain lessons about faith.
Not tear someone down for telling what is the truth in my Hebrew
version of the bible. Some things just aren't up for debate. The
TRUTH
is one such thing.

The big deal is that in our society people hete seeing the truth. They can hear it all day long but when words come to life....people have a strong difference of opinion.

Silence - the kind borne only of extreme awe or pain - settled over Regal Cinemas as the credits rolled at the end of the area's first showing of The Passion of the Christ.

The movie, the subject of analysis, debate and controversy in the last few weeks, opened Monday for a private screening for members and guests of Central Assembly of God in Haughton.

I saw the movie. All I will say is you have to go and see it. You will never forget it for the rest of your life.

i dont think that this movie will cause an "increase" in anti-semitism - it's not like most Christians ever needed a movie to feel that way to begin with

quite a few are already like that - "What movie?"
