It was all Archie Carlyle could think last month as he endured a basketball nightmare unfolding right before his eyes.

Yazoo City's 15-point lead over Lanier in the Division 3-4A championship game had shrunk to two, victim of yet another furious Horton-led comeback in the fourth quarter. Less than 7 seconds remained before Horton caught the inbounds pass, dribbled upcourt, elevated between two defenders and fired away from the top of the key.

Carlyle, a legendary old-school coach with six state championships on his r?sum?, could barely stand to look.

"I knew it was good as soon as he turned it loose," Caryle said last week. "I got a sick feeling in my stomach when he let it go. I believe no one else in the state of Mississippi would have made that shot but Horton. We had the defense. We were double-teaming him. We did all we could do, but he still made it."

R.L. Horton left little doubt who was the state's most successful boys basketball player this season, leading Lanier to a championship and Mississippi's No. 1 ranking for the third consecutive year.

Not all college recruiters are sold, however. While Jackson State and Southern Miss are among the schools pushing hard to sign Horton, no teams - including Mississippi State and Ole Miss - from any of the nation's high-profile BCS conferences are actively recruiting him.

The reason? Some coaches from those leagues believe the 6-foot, 175-pound Horton is not tall enough to play shooting guard nor an ideal fit at point guard.

Not surprisingly, Lanier coach Thomas Billups disagrees. So does Lavel Johnson, who covers high school basketball recruiting in Mississippi for MagnoliaPreps.com and The Hoop Scoop. Johnson rates Horton above Coahoma County forward Ravern Johnson, a Mississippi State signee who's widely regarded as the state's top prospect in the Class of 2007 by national recruiting analysts.

not sure what this post has to do with this thread. How many of those went to Jackson State?
 
They say R. L. is a straight yes and no sir type of person. They say he never talks back and does whatever is asked of him. He will do fine on Lynch street if he decides to go and will probably grow some more.
 
Mississippi State isn't recruiting him because they simply don't have enough scholarships. They already got 3 other cats coming in already. Who needs to be trying to sign him is James Green, because goodness knows we need some more scoring.

You wrong. Charlie was a point guard who could score when he had too. I think he was clearly the best basket ball player in the state his senior year.

Charlie White won Mr. Basketball his junior year and he averaged around 15 points a game. While one magazine named Monta Ellis the nation's top sophomore. He averaged 27.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5 assists and 3.1 steals. When White won Mr. Basketball I was shocked. I guess it was because Provine won the title that year. I also didn't think White had a great outside jumper. He liked to take guys off the dribble and use his speed. He certainly wasn't better than Ellis.

The Wyatt's have a legacy in Alcorn bball. Fayette's coach, Marcus Walton (my HS classmate), was also good. The only dude we got recently in Jackson was Coach Walkers son...but he only played good against Alcorn...LOL

Also, Alcorn does not have coaching. Jackson does. We have some good players coming out of Fayette this year.

So what, he played there. You tryin to tell me that if a kid transfers to Fayette and is recruited from there, he can't be claimed. If that's the case, JSU can't claim Trey Johnson or Lindsey Hunter or Corey Bradford, etc... :confused:
 
I know where Walker lived.....he ain't part of your city....

I don't know what you mean about the other guys but only secario I can draw is that 2 of the three went to Alcorn and then left
