The Lean Green Marching Music Machine???


Don't know if you guys talked about this, but can anyone from Valley tell who came up with this name? It sounds way to much like M4's name the Marching Musical Machine of the MidSouth, which was created by the late Odie Burrus in 1977. Where is the originality?? But anyway like they say imitation is the best form of flattery. :bump:

As a snare drummer in the M4 back in the day, I and the other band partners of mine admired Valley's band for their style,precision corp style. Really their percussion was second to none. Their percussion section was truly a percussion section.

As a kid I would watch MVSU march in the Rose Bowl Parade also.And if any band was truly to be called a "musical marching machine" MVSU at that time could hold that honor. They were fantastic. And the percussion section was the most admired. We would challenge Valley just for the fact that we wanted to hear them play. Yeah they "cut our heads" but it was all in fun and admiration.

And the FRAT and SORORS KKY/TBE were off the chain. They would greet us as soon we would get off the bus. After the games there was no animosity between the bands;we just admired each other's style. I will never forget after the challenges after the game that both bands would go party in the band room.

Nevertheless, I really can't recall Valley having a signature name back in the day, like SU'S The Human JukeBox(at that time they really did sounded like mofo JukeBox) or JSU's SONIC BOOM.

But hey.. if it bites me in the ass, and they did have the name so what.

You guys fail to realize that back in 1960, 1970 and 1980s Valley was an innovator for Black band across the nation. Valley broke the color barrier in 1968 and 1969 by becoming the first and only black band to march and perform the Tournament of Roses Parade two consecutive years. After this many people began to notice black bands during time of segration. Every band has their downfall and Valley is going through theirs now and I am confident Mr. Torregano will bring that legacy back to Valley. The Mean Green Marching Machine was giving to Valley by the second band director Mr. Russell Boone. I have seen pictures of in years book in the band hall from the 60s with pics and this saying underneath them. But like you said immatation really is the best form of flattery. Don't get me wrong I love UAPB. I love how you guys balance and blend together, and your intonation is always on point especially on songs like M4 and Roses Are Red. To this day Valley member has nothing but mad love and respect for M4 band members.

Yes We are the "Mean Green Marching Music Machine" at Mississippi Valley State University, and Very Proud of it!

I don't recall "Mean Green Marching Music Machine", but I do remember them being called the "MACK OF THE SWAC" and they were straight MACKING.

actually Valley has been known by both monikers, but "Mean Green Marching Machine" is waaaaay....... older than "Mack of the SWAC"
