J-State gives its version of melee

MONTGOMERY ? The Alabama road trip is considered one of the toughest to make in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

For Jackson State, this year's two-game road swing to Alabama A&M and Alabama State turned out to be one of the most eventful, as well.

JSU fell to Alabama A&M 105-83 Thursday night in a game that went from ugly to worse at the end when a 10-minute melee broke out as the Tigers were exiting the floor.

JSU's players were making their way to their locker room when a group of Alabama A&M fans made derogatory comments to them. Words were exchanged, campus security officers who were escorting the team off the floor stepped in, and things escalated from there.

The action spilled out into the lobby, where Alabama A&M campus security officers got into a heated exchange with a few players and a JSU female trainer. The officers sprayed several JSU players and one manager with Mace. One player, Brian Nichols, was handcuffed. A brick was thrown through a window from outside.

The fans involved were restrained by a couple of security officers in the gym while other officers and JSU's players, managers and trainer moved into the lobby.

Order was eventually restored, and JSU boarded its bus and made the three-hour trip here for tonight's game against Alabama State.

"It was an unfortunate situation," Alabama A&M police chief Dale Baxter said Thursday night. "A lot of this could have been avoided if the players had simply kept walking."

Baxter said JSU players "threw up gang signs" and "taunted the crowd" as they exited the floor.

JSU assistant coach Chris Giles and others with JSU's travel contingent told their version of the story here Friday at the team hotel.

"I don't know what they're talking about," Giles said. "We don't have any gang members on our team."

Campus security officers escorted JSU off the floor. But the fans were still "bumping us, pushing us and everything else," said player Richard Bradley, one of those sprayed with Mace.

Nichols said one fan "grabbed the butt" of the JSU female trainer. She got irate and started throwing water bottles once in the lobby.

That's when Nichols said he stepped in front of her and "got the worst of the deal."

The officer slipped on the wet floor, got up and headed toward Nichols.

"He sprayed me and I went to the floor," he said. "Then he cuffed me. We were just trying to get to our locker room."

Said SWAC spokesperson Wallace Dooley: "We are looking into this to see if any action is warranted."

Yes. If the manager didnt want to get her ass felt on, she should have run.... Right Lewis?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the handcuffed guy is on the inside, and the brick was thrown in from the outside, then the handcuffed guy COULD NOT have thrown the brick. Same for the rest of the team. Team inside, brick from outside, team couldn't have thrown brick. Ntelekt please explain.

Campus security officers escorted JSU off the floor. But the fans were still "bumping us, pushing us and everything else," said player Richard Bradley, one of those sprayed with Mace.

Somehow I knew that them annie maes weren't just sitting in the conforts of their seats running off at the mouth. Since when does "home taunting" consist of "bumping, pushing and everything else . . ."??? The ones that need discipline are the classless and wild ass annie mae fans. Act an ass, start a fight and blame it on the team for standing up to y'all thugs. :smh:

Nichols said one fan "grabbed the butt" of the JSU female trainer. She got irate and started throwing water bottles once in the lobby.

That's when Nichols said he stepped in front of her and "got the worst of the deal."

Not only did the unruly fans act a donkey with the team, they decided to feel up our trainer. Y'all right, charges should be filed. Against y'all sexual harassers. And Barney Fife wanna get mad at Nichols cause he can't walk on water. Classic example of the "style" that annie mae shows. Ntelekt please explain. Again!!!

"It was an unfortunate situation," Alabama A&M police chief Dale Baxter said Thursday night. "A lot of this could have been avoided if the players had simply kept walking."

Who the L expects college kids to keep walking when they are being pushed, shoved, taunted, heckled and groped, in the case of our fine arse female trainer. Nawl, this would have been avoided if the annie mae Barney Fifes had done their damn job. Instead of expecting JSU players to keep walking while they are getting physically abused, they shoulda been macing them thuggish ass fans and handcuffing them. Further proof of the annie mae "style", huh Ntelekt??? Please explain one mo time.

No way in "L"...

do you go from throwing up gang signs, mouthing off at the fans, one of your AC's trying to run up at our HC, and laughing while trying to put guys out of the game or tourney, to just trying to "quitely and humbly" get to the locker room!

JSU players as defenders of womanly honor? Gimme a GD Break!

I have never seen and more than likely never will see someone who just got beat the uckf up say they started a fight, that's the worsest !

Will an Annie mae explain to me what Gang sings has to do with anything? Someone could throw up all the gang signs they want, but why would that lead me to push him or spray him with mace like a woman? Please explain? Mike? Tru? MD?

I am in not trying to defend JSU, but I have to tell the truth since I was at the game. There was some touching of the JSU players by the A&M fans at Elmore. I did see that. I don't feel the talking along provoked the players, because I did see the fans touching the players. :(

I bet that damn trainer was the same gull who hollared RAPE

This whole damn article is BULL**** and the damn JSU players are lying their ass off. First of all, EVERYBODY IN THE DAMN GYM saw that yella punk throw gang signs, now JSU players say they dont have no gangmembers. If you tell one lie, how in the hell can you believe the rest of that bull****. That damn trainer was running her damn mouf, throwing chairs, and tryin to fight players during the game. If anybody grabbed her ass it was one of them damn sex offenders on JSU team.. NOBODY,was allowed to go to the back lobby/locker rooms. That bumpin **** was a lie also. Why dont yall understand that JSU players WERE VERY UPSET that they were losing. They have horrible sportsmanship. More than likely one of them said the wrong thing or did the wrong thing to SWAT... AND SWAT WILL KICK YOUR ASS. They are not like your regular campus police. Just ask the player from UAPB.

JSU chalk this up as an L. We kicked your ass by 22. We was kicking your ass before all of this happenned, and IF you come back to Elmore we will kick your ass again.

If yall believe this **** from JSU's basketball team, I hate to see what they told the judge during trial. These damn boys are good at lying.

DAHILL,

Let me get this straight. Your word is the GOSPEL and the players involved are straight lying????

As if I'm really gonna believe that our players just started a fight with your fans.

Is str8 brave lying too???

Sad.:(

Robber, as J-State and I talked for several minutes after the game, I did not see some of the things folks are talking about that happened in the gym once the game was over. Some players shook hand and the coaches shook hands. Walking toward the back of the gym, there was nothing going on with players and fans in that corner. Whatever took place must have happened between security and the ball players close to the locker rooms. I do know that the manager and #15 were still angry when they departed the court.

From an outsider's perspective.....

....this is a dayum shame!!!!!:(

Regardless of who started what or who said what or who touched who, I find it sad that I can't even find my school's score (PV) in the Houston Chronicle but I see a 3 paragraph write-up on this melee some 300 miles away (as someone so eloquently put it). The media is loving the SWAC right now. I mean lets all put our schools aside and think for a second. In the last 4 years, the SWAC has seen 2 bands fight, 2 football teams fight, the commisioner fired, the conference sued by the former commisioner, now 2 basketball teams fighting. _ _ _!!

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Gregory Burks (PV #3) almost end up in a fight in Elmore a few years back? Didn't I hear something about a UAPB kid in Elmore? Now I don't know the details of those incidents nor do I know about the Elmore atmosphere. But what I do know is that something up there ain't right. I have seen lots of basketball games where the fans are into it and are riding the players to death. But it never ends up like that. Hell, if the Baby Dome is packed, it is arguably the toughest arena in the SWAC. Hecklers all over the place calling the players everything but a child of God. After the game everybody gets up and goes home.

I'm not saying AAMU started this, but obviously, they need to re-evaluate some things in Elmore.

S phi... your whole post is BULL****. We know how to frustrate players and get into their heads with words.

I was at all of the games you mentoined.

The Burkes incident.... this is EXACTLY what happenned. AAMU's freshman point guard was ABUSING Burks. On this particular play he crossed Burks over and made Burks fall. THE WHOLE DAMN GYM was laughing, because everybody at AAMU knows Burks and respects his game. He was embarressed because everybody was laughing, so he committed an intention foul. When they called an intentional, he got upset and cussed the ref out. He was never ejected, but the PV coach couldnt control him, so he escorted him to the locker room. While walking with him to the locker room, Burks started pushing HIS OWN COACH (assistant I think). So that was the only person he was trying to fight.

UAPB incident... similiar to the JSU incedent. UAPB players were frustrated because they were getting beat by 24. ONe of their players got 2 quick techs and thrown out the game. He REFUSED to leave the game, so SWAT was called to escort him to the locker room. When SWAT approached him, he PUSHED SWAT, then they commenced to put a Rodney King on him. AAMU's campus police (SWAT) aint like your normal rent a cops. If they feel violated, they will beat your ass.

Through ALL of this AAMU's basketball has never been involved in a fight. AAMU players have something these other players dont have and that is DISCIPLINE. Pettaway would have BEEN kicked some of these players on the above teams, off the team. If you remember, last year he kicked 3 starters (second and third leading scorers ) off the team for breaking team rules. Most teams in the SWAC have players that have no discipline or respect for their coaches. Most SWAC teams I have seen have players that talk back to coaches. I am just not use to seeing that.

To respond to the first paragraph.... TWO basketball teams werent fighting. No player from AAMU was involved in anything. With Pettaway, if you fight you may NEVER get into a game the rest of the season. No matter who you are. He will put you in what he calls "HIS DOGHOUSE"

The second paragraph, the only thing that needs to be re-evaluated in Elmore is most of yall sorry ass teams. If you want the fans to shut up... start winning. Every incident that has happenned in Elmore, has been when a team was getting beat by 20 or more and they feel embarressed. That is when the cheap fouls come. Yall SWAC teams need to learn how to take your asswhippin like a man. A team like Alcorn has discipline... you didnt see them in here getting flagrant fouls left and right when AAMU beat them.

Bull****?!?!?!?
Like I stated, I really don't know any more than what was posted here and what I read. Maybe I was off point with the Burks reference, but the point remains the same. My point is something similar to yours, but not quite. I have seen teams get thoroughly demolished (mine included). But when it comes to that level, something needs to be done. The SWAC doesn't have anymore eyes to make black, if ya get my drift. Never once did I say AAMU fans started it or JSU should have walked off.

Second off, Elmore can't be any more crucial or rowdy than the Baby Dome can get. So I don't wanna hear all that extra mess. But I ave never seen fights between players and fans. And we have some of the best hecklers in the SWAC sitting right behind the visitor bench. If your arse would READ, you would see that I was not accusing AAMU (your beloved institution that can do no wrong:rolleyes: ).

And remember, this sorry arse team dayum near beat yalls talented, disciplined arses just a couple of nights before the other 'sorry arse team' DID beat yall.

When I said sorry ass teams... I wasnt talking to y ou directly. I was talking to the teams that are getting beat by 20 then want to start fights. They are childesh and have no discipline. I dont know how the Baby Dome is, but I will tell you at Elmore we have probably the best record in the nation. 204-23 over 16 years. This is one of the toughest places in the nation to play.

Never that... I have discipline. I like to meet as many people as I can from the swacpage, so I just asked if he was coming to the game.

Robber,

From what I saw, the JSU players were not just provoked from talking but from touching from the fans also. Those A&M folks are in denial. I remember the Alcorn vs. A&M basketball game when an Alcorn player was out of bounds and about to throw the ball in bounds, the fans were touching him, so security had to come and stop them. I have no reason to lie. I feel I am a neutral party.

str8brave,

I know how it went down. DAHILL sounding like a broken record on how well coached and disciplined Pettaway's players are. But he can't see that NONE OF US has questioned anything about annie mae's team. We talking about their UNDISCIPLINED, UNRULY, ROWDY, THUGGISH ASS FANS!!! Not the team.

If fans from another school tried to push Pettaway's angels around after a game, they wouldn't just keep walking and continue to be pushed.

SMH @ DAHILL's blindness. Well, he sees it. He just don't wanna, I'm betting.

Robber why don't yall just teach your players how to act and maybe things like this wont happen. After all....it isn't like this is the first time recently your school has started a brawl.

Dahill,

You ever notice how everybody is a lie and they didnt see what they saw? One thing about Mark Alexander, beat writer for JSU, he does not lie for JSU nor sugarcoat the truth.

The fact is you have thuggish ass, rowdy, country, no class having, not use to having anything, monkey, punk ass, gutless fans.

You seem to also be proud of your campus security that doesnt seem to have a problem with putting thier hands on players too.

Lets see.....if the players were exiting the game, and the fans were in their way, why would security harass and get into an altercation with the players? Werent the players in an area where they were suppose to be. Why doesnt security vacate that area so this wont happen? Why were the fans there in the first place?

0-10 has now taken the place of another school as the most classless school in the SWAC. Heckle all you want, but to even phathom putting your hands on a player is unimaginable. Your school encourages it by not putting a stop to it.

Hill,

Do you see a pattern here?

JST,

I dont think they are rude....I think they are just country and dont know any better. When are not use to being successful and you have anything else to do, this is how you act. If you grow up in an atmosphere where you think its OK to act like a monkey, you think acting like a monkey is the norm. Just listen to Hills explanations. He sees nothing wrong, cause this happens all the time in Monkeyland.

Count it all Joy....Good things happen in the end.
