ACC Commish Calling For Playoff Expansion

"I don't think all the controversy's going to go away," Swofford said of the four-team College Football Playoff, according to the newspaper. "You have four teams that get a chance to play for the national championship, which is twice as many as before, but whoever's fifth or sixth is not going to be happy. There will be some conferences that won't have a team in the playoff."

Swofford is a member of the College Football Playoff management committee.

"I expect an 8-team playoff increasingly to be a topic of conversation, but each FBS conference would want to take the temperature of its membership on something as significant as this," American commissioner Mike Aresco told ESPN. "There are real concerns such as the academic calendar and the increased demands on our student-athletes. The details of an 8-team playoff also would be a major issue."

"I do think it has a great deal of potential," Swofford said of the playoff. "The question is asked a lot, 'Why not eight?' or 'Will it become eight in a few years?' I can tell you why not eight, right now: The presidents made the decision as to how far we can go with the playoff, and the bookends are exams in December, and the presidents don't want football to become a two-semester sport. Those concerns are education-based. So I think they're appropriate"

I think they will eventually go to 8 teams. I think the Power 5 would want each of their conference champion in as a auto bid and then go with 3 at large teams to fill out the brackets.

5 Big Conferences. 4 spots. Who didn't see this coming? This is pretty much like the #69 and #70 teams getting snubbed in March

Plus with there always the chance of a team doing like Marshall this year, they are in the mix as well.

5 conference champions. 3 at larges (including some type of stipulation in which a non-power 5 conference teams can get in IF they finish in the top 10-12... something like that)

Again you're showing..........................................well everyone knows.....

What is the point of all of this? To name the NATIONAL CHAMPION... can anyone go back over the BCS champs and say which was was not CLEARLY the best team in the nation? If you had teams on the outside looking in claiming to be the best, we could say the system was flawed. It wasn't flawed for it's intended purpose. It got it right! Now let BAMA go into the playoff and lose thier QB with five minutes go in the game ahead by two TDs but get smoked the next week in the championship. You will still have a flawed system questioning if the best team won.

The only reason I can see the 8 teams not happening is that would make the champ have to win THREE games rather than one. Imagine the toll on the body of the players to have to play THREE top 8 teams in the span of a few weeks! ..and this is after conference championship games and rivalry weeks. This is not the NFL!

The FCS schools don't see to have a problem with this in a 16 team playoff.

Those schools don't play 12 game seasons, have a rivalry week, and championship game. Those schools typically play an 11 game season, + 3 weeks of playoffs if they reach the final for a TOTAL of 14 games. The 1-A schools play 12 weeks + a championship game for a TOTAL of 13 games. With the BCS Championship, both played 14 games to win a title. 8 games would push it to 16 games.. an NFL SEASON!

I keep tryna tell ya'll that you are not as smart, or logical or deep at TP.

They have to win 2 additional games now to be claimed champ, so what is the difference of winning 3?

24 team playoff ....

24 team playoff ....

It's 24 but the first week is like a play-in.. and the winners of that week don't typically live to play another day after then enter the field of 16.

My point is TWO is too many right now. Three is way too many. These are not pros. These are kids. If you can't choose a national champ from 12 weeks of play and a championship game, you never will. By the end of all of that, the national champ is clear. I could go with the +1 but if you are ranked 5-8, you don't need to be in the National Championship discussion.

I say do away with Independents and let every conference champion go to the playoffs. If you not in conference you don't go. In the second round from the winners strength of schedule would determine who gets the bye....the two with the weakest schedule will compete....then you have two left.

That's the only reason I was cool with the BCS.... Humans have emotions..... and agendas...... computers don't........

I say go back to the old system and pick the top 8 teams...Sheesh aint no way OSU should be number 5...Also what if the conf champ lucks up and wins and you have a team that went undefeated all year and lose the championship to a 8-4 team....then do they deserve to really play for the title?

Co-Sign

They could have kept the BCS and just picked the top 4 or 8 if they want to expand
