Few things say autumn and parades like the brass and drum of a marching band. But while many of us know them primarily from watching parades, such as the iconic Rose Parade on New Year's Day, in colleges across the country marching bands prepare for national competitions. Months are spent in preparation and the movement in synch to the music can be blood stirring. Well, it is for those of us who love marching bands. Ever wondered who ranked on top? Recently, College-sports fan.com released their picks. They are based on their outstanding marching style, the songs they have chosen to play and the drills and dancing skills they portray in descending order. Many of these bands are also part of each year's national competition, so you know that you could not go wrong to check out any of these top ten picks for this year.
10. Southern University Human Jukebox - Southern University and A&M College
The name of this marching band pretty much says it all. This band is known for its flashy style and high-stepping marching. Combine this with music you just may recognize from the local jukebox instead of the same old marching band tunes and you have a winning combination.
9.Tennessee Pride of the Southland Band -- University of Tennessee at Knoxville
This band has been impressing folks everywhere for a very long time, stretching all the way back to 1869 when they were initially part of the Military Department at the university. They have participated in more presidential inaugurations then any non-military band in the nation, playing every year since 1965 with the lone exception of 2013.
8.Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band -- Texas A&M University
A very traditional band, it is also the largest at a little over 400 participants. You shouldn't be surprised to find a certain military preciseness to the band; they are after all part of the Corp of Cadets at Texas A&M. This simply gives them the strongest "espirit de corps" you will find anywhere in the world of marching bands as they tend to travel, eat and sleep as a group.
7.Marching Illini -- University of Illinois University
You can watch for this band at this year's Thanksgiving Day Parade. A very traditional marching band, they are known for their innovative performances. John Phillip Sousa, the famed 1920s creator of many marching band song staples called it the "world's greatest college band" and it continues to stay in the top ten list.
6.Sonic Boom of the South -- Jackson State University
This band has tons of energy as anyone can tell you who has watched their legendary "Tiger Run On" at the start of their show. For over 65 years this band has entertained audiences, and the early influences of jazz legend Cab Calloway can still be heard when they play. They were the first African-American college band to play at a World's Fair, in 1965, and continue to "rock da house" wherever they play.
5.The University of Texas Longhorn Band
When "Big Bertha" the world's largest bass drum makes the scene with this band, everyone knows it. The Longhorn Band is versatile, playing both traditional marching band music with drills along with more modern music and movements. Their most famous traditional march, the "Wall to Wall Band" takes the entire football field to unveil as it curls in spirals from end zone to sidelines.
