Texas Southern (TSU) Football

Texas Southern has traditionally focused on Track & Field and Basketball. It has only been in the last 5-6 years that emphasis has been placed on Football. This is a welcome change because we have come very close in turning the corner to contend with the likes of GSU, JSU, and Southern. Remember in 1999 TSU went to GSU and beat them. We only needed to beat Southern and we would have been in the SWAC Championship game. Then in 2000, we needed to beat GSU in San Antonio and we would have been able to play in the SWAC Championship game.

Last year the team was expected to match or improve on the 8-3 season that we had the year before. However, with major injuries the team had a losing season. This year is going to be difficult because we have new defensive and offensive coordinators. In addition, the football team is 70% new faces. TSU has historically been strong on defense and that should remain true this season. If Orlando ( Offensive coordinator ), can get these new guys to gel quickly, there could be some big surprises in store.

TSU fans are hungry for a consistent winner, in fact that is the nature of Houstonians. Fan support for the Houston Rockets has dwindled because they are not winning. It is going to be a very interesting season!!!

So, if things workout the way I hope......GSU should be concerned because you have to face us for Homecoming in front of a large crowd. SU, we know that we have to come to Mumford and if it comes down to us winning that game in order to advance to the SWAC Championship.....You should be afraid too!!!

sTu on the prowl..... Go Tigers!!!!

tissue SCHEDULED THE ICON THAT IS GRAMBLING FOR HOMECOMING. :D

If TSU has made a committment to improving the program, it is nothing but good for the conference. I would love to see the TxSU - GSU game return to the prominence that it had during the late 60's thru mid-seventies (The Space City Classic).

We will see what's up with TxSU...with your location, you SHOULD be winning at a much higher rate.

mhurd97,

You need to check into our Third Coast Tigers. Go on in and introduce yourself to the rest of the TSU family;)

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY...........GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two questions:
1. Where (venue)exactly is this game supposed to take place?
2. What does Txsu consider a large crowd?

I agree with you, MHurd97. I think the West is wide open. We have a lot of question marks going into this season, but if we can get off to a good start and have somethings fall our way, TSU could win the West this year and maybe the SCG.

Coach, the game is in the Astrodome. I think 20K is a good crowd. If something is on the line for both schools, I see now reason why we couldn't draw 20K+.

explain "something is on the line for both schools"

TSU is making their push too late. PV is starting to emerge from the dooms and they have already began to take aim at what momentum TSU has gained in some sports.

They get a new hoops coach who has people excited about the program and they land a baseball coach who will do the same. A winning PV could really put a dent in TSU. TSU had their chance to shine but never could take advantage.

If next race will be to see who lands a new stadium.

TSU never had Houston on lockdown like they was supposesd too.

PVU, what are you smoking??

Talk about too late....First..What momentum are you taking from TSU?? Certainly not basketball or football. And certainly not the athletes. So what are you talking about??

Texas Southern's greatest days are still ahead of us......further ahead than PV's.....(remember we offer more scholarships and have a winning program) PV doesn't.

Don't get me wrong, a competitive PVU is good for the whole conference, esp. TSU. It would make the local competition even better. I can see it now.......a sold out Relient Stadium for the Labor Day Classic.

Also, our stadium plans should be finalized when the state legislature convenes in January.;)

TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY.......OPENING DOORS TO OPPORTUNITY!!!;)

Don't be surprised this season if you see some would be tiggers......, in a PANTHER uniform !!

With last years SWAC west standing, what is your definition of a winning program?
WEST

Conference Team
Grambling State..... 6 1 0
Southern................ 5 2 0
Prairie View A&M.... 2 5
Texas Southern...... 2 5 0
Arkansas-Pine Bluff. 1 6 0

As of 2003 which is right aroung the corner you will not have more scholarships than an already competitive PVAMU. If we are already competitive with a limited amount of scholarships we will own Tissue starting this season in every sport

As long as the Bayou Bucket between UH & RICE is played on the same night you will never see a sold out LDC

One question? if the stadium plans are finalized today, where in the ...ell would they put it ?

you had a chance to dominate Houston and kill whatever momentum PV had during the 90s, you have failed to do so. The scholarshps are on their way back next year and your teams are still average. And what do you mean about winning program?

We own you in track
We own you in softball
You always split with us in basketball
you are supposed to win in football and you done that
you split with us in volleyball
we defeated you all in baseball

looks like you did not do your work when you are supposed too. If I can smash someone in the ground and keep them there I will do it.

No comeback huh?

he refeses to smack because he knows TSU has not jumped at the chance to capture Houston and Texas like they should have. Now they want to make a late push and it is too late.

ANYWAY.....EVERYBODY KNOWS "THE ICON THAT IS GRAMBLING" OWNS TEXAS!

How TSU stacks up?

PV supporter you claim that TSU squandered an opportunity to take a sronghold of Houston and it did not . Let me offer this explanation. TSU is a relative young university (55 years old) compared to the other century old universities such as PV, GSU,JSU, and Southern. This is is important because there is much more history at theses universities. Another thing that the above universities have that TSU doesn't is a small college with ample land for more physical growth. TSU is in a large city with many of its students living off campus. This very fact dilutes the college experience.

TSU has to compete for sports coverage with professional teams and two division 1-A schools in UH and Rice. However, TSU is resilient and strong. Like many of our other HBCUs we have taken many beatings from the media in an attempt to discredit our universities.

Again, I say TSU is on its way to become a constant force in basketball and football.......other SWAC schools get ready weep!!! TSU has many fans throughout the city and country. And yes with a competitive PV, the Reliant Stadium can sell-out even if UH/Rice plays on the same day. The TSU/PV game is like UT/Texas A&M. A note on average attendence last football season. TSU~9,000 (student body ~8,000); Rice ~ 11,000 ( student body 5,000); U/H~15,000 ( student body ~33,000 + 10,000@dntown location). So, when TSU put together a consistent program our attendence will blow the 1-A schools out of the water.

you all don't want to admit it but PV has carried the attendance crown the past few years when it comes to the big events between us. Where are your fans? Have you noticed the H&PE is never filled to capacity compared to the Baby Dome?

if both schools take off you will see a slant towards PV. Have you noticed the one radio guy who follows both schools has nothing but good things about PV?

Mach, last time GSU took a Houston hoop player she came home Bi.

The Baby Dome holds 5,000 and the Moreland Arena holds 8,000.

WOW!

In reference to this post.. Fact. Texas Southern during it hey day in Football never relied on Houston as it primary source of Athletes. P/V traditionally has recruited well Houston. Example.
Otis Taylor, Maurice McGowan, The Former BtW Coach. TSU has recruited well in Florida , East Texas. Example, Kenny Burrough, Homer Jones, Julius Adams, Audrey Ford.

Without Checking, I believe in Men's Basketball, P/v has beaten TSU in Basketball only Four times in the Last 25 years. Those four Victories have been in the last 5 years.

Track. Until the demise of Dave Bethany, The Flying Tigers dominated Track. Remember we are recently coming off Prob.

College football in Houston, will suffer as this is a Professional Football town.

If you look at most successful SWAC Programs, from an attendance standpoint they are located in rural are isolated areas.

Everybody loves to come to Houston. If they are lucky, they get a job and never leave.
