This is rifriggindiculous. No offense to CLeb and the gang, but I guess we're calling anything a Classic nowadays. A high school stadium?

I know, I know, Texas folks, some of y'all's high school stadiums are nicer than some of our college ones, but to me this just waters down the term "Classic".

P-Neck...I see your point. I wonder if Bama State is actually getting something for playing this game in Longview, or is it just considered a road trip expense in which TSU gets most of the $$$$.

It could be nothing more than a glorified home game for TSU since they are having problems trying to play in Houston (at UH/Rice)...Correct me if I am wrong TSU folks.

I'd also like to add that I have nothing personal against Longview. In fact, I have a special place in my heart for Lobo country. I was in Chili's in Longview in October 1995 when my Braves won the World Series. It was after #1 McNeese beat #2 SFA in Nacogdoches. My brother-in-law (who is now OC at Neville in Monroe) was coaching in Kilgore at the time.

To be on TSU's defene, the 3rd Coast Tigers are just in a bad situration by not having a dedicated home football stadium. TSU has made tremendous improvements to the University infrastructure, but they are land locked as a campus. They just don't have the property available near the University to construct a stadium, parking, etc.

Even if there were land available near TSU, is would be too much $$$$ to build a stadium, because TSU now sits on some very prime real estate in Houston.

Hopefully they can get a deal done with either UofH and work out any scheduling conflicts.

If they are "land locked" maybe TSU needs to look at the feasibility of exercising immenent domain. If sitting on prime property then they should have the security to build the stadium. I am quite sure some financial institution would be more than happy to assist.

I like the stadium it seems to be nice from what I can see on the net. It won't be full so Ithink it would work out for them and no smack intended... But if it were something smaller I would have a problem and I not from TSU...... But I wish that they would get there own stadium in a hurry.......

I don't think that would fly, especially to build a football stadium. :emlaugh:

With the new law all one has to do is illustrate a revenue impetus (unfortunately).

Is Bama State's band also a part of the festivities?

cat daddy,

I don't think that our band is going to Texas at all. They probably won't make enough money on this "classic" to require us to bring our band all the way to Texas.

I'm with you. Everybody (individual promoters/companies) wants to buy a HBCU out of a home game because they have some brilliant idea to move it off campus and attempt to make everybody some money.

I am not against trying very "fertile soil" in Longview but don't designate it as a "classic" all the time.

TSU can take the property any time they are ready to develop it....

As already mentioned, TSU has immenent domain in the area.

Now ready C-Lebs Siggy about the topic of this thread, then read my Siggy.

This is so SAD.

Longview?? :dead:

Yes and no.

We are undergoing a MAJOR face lift across the entire campus:

*Two new parking garages to allieviate our horrendous parking issues (with bookstore, Starbucks and copy center).

*New Barbara Jordan/Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs

*New Science Building

*Campus Beautification Project

*Recently completed multimillion dollar Thurgood Marshall School of Law Renovation

*Recently completed multimillion dollar Recreation Center

*Recently completed multimillion dollar Gray Hall School of Pharmacy & Health Science wing addition

*Recently completed multimillion dollar renovations to our Student Center

In 2005, Third Ward is an investor's dream. What cost $100K for a home in 1995 is $250 in 2005. Texas Southern already owns quite a substantial amount of property north of the campus (from Ennis & Cleburne up to the MLK Multi-Purpose Center). Why Slade won't pull the trigger.... (it would be a political nightmare).

Hopefully they can get a deal done with either UofH and work out any scheduling conflicts.

Been there... done that. She tried to in conjunction with Jack Yates but UH said flat out: "NO DEAL"

Has a study been done on what size stadium could be built around Durley field? I thought this was in the works.

The U. S. Supreme just said it OK for a gov't to take people's homes so a private developer can build a mall. If they'll OK that, a school can definitely take land for it's own use, even a stadium.

I forgot to mention our Alexander Durley Complex is getting its bleachers refurbished as we speak along with a brand new press box. We already had the new "Astro Play" field surface and Mondo track installed a couple of years ago.

This will be our home stadium for the smaller games. This is a litmus test to show Slade that if we sell out this stadium every home game, then it would justify building an on campus stadium that seats 30K. Simply put, Slade is not one to invest heavily in athletics as this is not her major concern. The university needed attention to it's academic needs as a priority than that of athletics. In order to recruit a better academic makeup of professors and deans, they need to have competitive ammenities of our competitors rather than a football stadium that may or may not have a winning season. This is a double-edged sword we are dealing with at Texas Southern. Now had all the academic issues been addressed BEFORE Slade became President, then I would be all on her in taking care of the athletic needs as a major priority. I am all for a huge athletic program but it will always take a back seat to academics.

Yes it has. Roughly around 12K (17K maximum).

Initially, Slade wanted to do an on campus stadium but met political resistance. She tried to broker a deal with UH for joint ownership of Robertson Stadium but met a resounding "NO" from their Regents even with a financial buy into the stadium.

Several acres of land presented itself to her from a Black North Houston community (Acres Homes) but so many alumni, students were dead set against that idea of building a stadium that far off our central campus.

It's more to it than I care to explain right now at this time but that answers your question.
