COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M freshman Dominique Kirk hit two free throws with eight seconds to play, and Alabama A&M?s Obie Trotter missed a 3-pointer near the buzzer, as the Aggies escaped with a 71-68 win over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon before 4,670 at Reed Arena.

The win was Texas A&M?s sixth straight to open the season.

The Aggies led by six with just 20 seconds to play, but Alabama A&M scored five points in six seconds to cut Texas A&M?s lead to just one before Kirk?s free throws.

With the Aggies leading 69-63 and 20 seconds left, Chris Collins tipped in a rebound off a missed 3-pointer by Trotter to pull the Bulldogs (3-4) to within four. A quick Texas A&M turnover led to a successful trey by Trotter to cut the lead to one with eight seconds left.

The Bulldogs then fouled Kirk, who hit both free throws to lift the Aggies to the win.

Texas A&M led for all but eight seconds in the first half and took a six-point lead into the locker room, but Alabama A&M opened the second half with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 43 with 18 minutes to play.

The Aggies allowed another one-point Bulldog lead a few minutes later but regained the lead for good on an Acie Law trey with 14:04 to go.

Kirk led Texas A&M with 18 points while adding seven rebounds and a game-high four steals. Law added 13 points while freshman Joseph Jones scored eight and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Trotter paced Alabama A&M with 18 points, five assists and two steals on 7-of-13 shooting. Marcus Jones was the only other player in double figures with 12 points.

Texas A&M continues its 10-game homestand on Wednesday when the Aggies host Louisiana-Monroe at Reed Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Postgame Quotes & Notes

Alabama A&M Coach Vann Pettaway:

"Every time we made a run they responded. I think that they are going to do well in the Big 12. I guess I'm just disappointed that we lost the basketball game when we had an opportunity to win. We got in foul trouble and we went to our freshman, Marcus Jones, and he kept us in the game. Our team plays with a lot of confidence when he's on the floor. So that's the difference between this year and last year. People are going to say we played them close, but I didn't come here to get a moral victory. I don't believe in those. We felt that if we applied enough pressure we could stay close, and we were close, but we didn't create enough turnovers. Coach Gillispie does an outstanding job. I was concerned about their high-powered offense, because they have been crushing people. We'll go back to the drawing board, and we'll work a little bit harder. Hopefully we'll be ready to play our next game."

Texas A&M Sophomore Acie Law:

"They just brought it to us. Maybe we overlooked them a little bit, but they just brought it to us. For them to come into our court and play us like that, it's definitely a wake up call."

Texas A&M Freshman Dominique Kirk:

"They really came to us. We just have to get tougher down the stretch, just gut it out. I don't think we handled the press very well. We go over it in practice every day, but their defense was just real good. We picked it up toward the end."

Texas A&M Coach Billy Gillispie:

"I would like to applaud Alabama A&M's effort. They played harder than us every single offensive and defensive possession. That's my fault. These guys have been doing every thing I've asked them to do, so apparently I haven't been asking them to do the right things. Dominique Kirk was outstanding today. He made a real bad decision at the end, but he bailed everybody out offensively, defensively, and leadership wise. He was as good as you could possibly be. You play like you preactice. Our practice has been okay, but not as good as it needs to be. We have to understand that you have to practice every single day. Today, we weren't successful; we just happened to win on the scoreboard. The team that was successful didn't end up winning on the scoreboard. There were some positive things. If we would have played a perfect game today we'd be 6-0, and if we played like we played today, we're still 6-0. We could only win one game today."

Like Pettaway said, you should never play for moral victories, still when it comes time for SWAC play, I just have a feeling good things are going to happen based on how we have played and how we keep getting better in each game. Keep it up Dawgs!!!

We got into foul trouble and we weren't committing all the fouls that were called......

I can't wait until SWAC games start. We have a bench, now! :D ;)

The Huntsville Time's article alluded to a possible bad call that affected the game. I think this season will be our best season ever in SWAC play.

"They outplayed us," said Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie, who led UTEP to a 24-8 record and a NCAA Tournament bid last year before upgrading to
A&M trailed 41-35 at halftime, but took the lead briefly at 47-46 with 15:32 left on a Joe Martin drive.

Just when the Aggies appeared ready to pull away, Martin made one of two free throws, Trotter hit a 3-pointer and Martin scored from the right wing to cut the Aggie advantage to 64-63 with 1:13 remaining.

Texas A&M missed a shot and the ball went out of bounds. It appeared to be the Bulldogs' ball, but the officials awarded it to the Aggies, who immediately scored on inbounds play."

They had a good win over Belmont. They dominated the second half.

Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Alabama A&M

GAME DAY CENTRAL
Box Score
Nashville, Tenn. --- Finding itself down at the midway mark for the first time at home this season, the Belmont women?s basketball team was unable to overcome the deficit to defeat visiting Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Curb Event Center. The Lady Bulldogs extended their series win streak to two games with their 79-66 win over the Bruins.

The first half saw both teams trading baskets on their respective ends of the court with neither squad able to pull ahead by more than two points before the score was tied up again. With the game tied at 13 with 12:59 on the clock, Ashley Rankins hit a jumper to put AAMU up by two. Junior Tonisha Jones (Brownsville, Tenn.) knocked down her first three-pointer of the contest to give the Bruins a one-point edge. Alabama A&M then went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by two treys by Naomi Barnes. Belmont began chipping at the lead, narrowing it to one after a steal and a fast break lay-up by senior Hollie Davis (Nashville, Tenn.) with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Rebecca Barnes dropped in a shot from downtown to give the Lady Bulldogs a four-point lead but was answered by junior Jenny Conkle (New Haven, Ind.) with just 46 ticks left on the clock. At the buzzer, Kimberly Pratcher battled inside the paint to squeeze in a lay-up to give AAMU a 33-30 lead.

Freshman Brooke Sunday (Sparta, Tenn.) opened the second half, connecting on two free throws to move the Bruins to within one again but that would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. Belmont had several rallies to keep the score close until Alabama A&M extended its lead to 10-points after a lay-up by LaShowann Smith with just over five minutes remaining in the game. A bucket from behind the arc by Tonisha Jones would not be enough to spark the Bruins as the Lady Bulldogs went on to cruise to the 79-66 victory.

AAMU outshot the Bruins from the floor, 55.2 percent to 40.7 percent, including a 62 percent performance in the second half alone.

Quit cyring. You lost! Move on. Everytime a black school looses to a white school we always want to go to the cheating card.

Now I wasnt at this game.... but I have seen with my own eyes how it can be done... AAMU-University of Alabama game..... I know AAMU's top scorer Obbie Trotter only played around 7 minutes in the first half because of foul trouble.... he has never come close to fouling out a game. The call that everyone from AAMU is questioning was when AAMU was down by 1 late in the game and Texas A&M shot an airball that went out of bounds and the ball was awarded to TAMU. Pettaway NEVER complains about calls at games.. but you can tell he wanted to say something bad about this one in the press conference... all he said "if this game was played on a neutral court we win the game". TAMU was 5-0 they didnt want a SWAC team beating them to stop their streak.

Whose crying? Mike was at the game. You weren't. Nobody on here has said anything about a white/black issue, BUT YOU.

Dude, Mississippi got your head all messed up I see.

as far as im concerned all preseason games are practice games for conference play... We have played well in all of our pre season games..... JSU barely beat that sorry ass SF Austin team. They were HORRIBLE... had about 20 points at the half.... Just have JSU ready Curt Dog :)

Looks like the bulldogs are off to a competitve start - I am expecting big things this year from AAMU if they stay healthy.
