Teachers: Students Emulating Reality TV Drama

With reality TV shows like Basketball Wives and Bad Girls Club dominating prime time television, it appears a growing number of impressionable young women are beginning to emulate the drama-filled behavior being broadcast on TV.

Atlanta’s V-103 invited local teachers to discuss the effects of reality TV on their students.

According to the teachers that called into the radio show so many impressionable girls are taking on the negative characteristics of the characters of the reality shows. These characteristics includes promiscuity, chasing after the trappings of the good life, relying on the external instead of refining the internal, and not loving themselves.

Interesting.

You know the "well, white folks do it too" comment is coming.

And help the poor man who is first to suggest women are somehow responsible for any of this.

:(

Cultural suicide.

In 2011, Black people have more access to and creative control over mainstream media than ever before but the images portrayed of black people on there are arguably worse than ever before.

I prefer the rebuttal that kids aren't influenced by what they consume through mass media.

So how does the Black community resolve this?

I think Reality TV is bad for everybody to begin with. I mean, kids are exposed to more mass media these days than any other time in human history. But there are a couple of things folks can do to rid ourselves of this ill.

1. Folks gotta stop selling out for money whether it be movies, TV or music.
2. We have to stop watching the crap. Because the more we watch, more of these shows will be created.
3. Parents just have to monitor (the best they can) what their children are consuming through mass media and then explain to them the pros and cons of it all because kids are impressionable. Heck, adults are as well. So, those are just some of the things folks can do to combat the problem.

Too much like right and common sense for too many.

so obviously people aint gonna stop producing these shows so how do we get kids to stop watching them since obviously it aint on the parents to stop them from watching it???

Well, parents can have certain channels blocked using the parental control function on their TV or remote control.

Sir

That does not work.

A lot of this stuff has been happening long before these shows came on the air. You can block it in your house but what about OTHER people's houses, schools (we can't block everything no matter how hard we try), libaries and cellphones.

Start showing the consequences of these actions. With the exception of a few reality, most of these shows are filled with duimmies. Not all those women come from money.

How many have jobs that don't feature "do you want fries with that" or "I'll need $50 to make you holla" or swing from a pole?

How many went on to college? How many have steady work in "Hollywood" since that was the goal of many?

How many are back in their home towns collecting a welfare check?

For all that cooning-how many doors got shut in their face because no one wanted to put up with that mess of out of control people?

So of course they will keep making them and doing their best to recruit US, so we can c**n our way out of college and jobs.

And we that know the truth can do our best to educate our kids but as long HOME accepts it and that kid can't think for himself. We are fighting a losing battle.

I've said many times recently, that life is imitating art versus the other way around as it normally is...

Sign of the time; the reality that people need to face that media CAN and DOES affect your child.

Can parents stop/control some of it...of course they can. BUT it takes diligence, persistence and overall watching/being with your child a lot. What am I saying?
Parents CAN control what their kids wear. Kids with no jobs can't afford Jordans or Red Monkey jeans...
Parents CAN control what their kids do afterschool. Doesn't matter if they are in extracurricular activities--BE THERE.
Paernts DO NOT have to have TVs in their houses.
Parents CAN put parental blocks on the computer.
Kids DO NOT have to have FB or Twitter or any other social media account
Parents DO NOT have to have internet access at home--library is blocking do gone nearly everything that's not G or PG.
Parents CAN not allow their kids to go to certain parties.

There are PLENTY of things parents can do...so I'm not discounting this. Its a huge struggle, but the parents FIRST must decide if they are willing to GET INTO the struggle to control what media access their children have.

Most parents want their kid to be in the "in" crowd, popular, so they give into the whining, crying. I heard it from my kid and think I also gave in when I got tired of hearing it on smaller things. Some things he constantly asked for/to do never came to pass.

All I can say is: raise your kid with a goal in mind of how you'd like them to turn out. Then be diligent.

Make YOU PARENTS the #1 role model in their lives.

So girls weren't promiscuous before Bravo and MTV started this?

I guess the neighborhood freaks were ahead of the game back when I was in high school.

Like I said.

B.E.T ain't the devil black folks tabbed it to be.

REALITY TV IS...........Pure Garbage. Just putting people with absoutly no talent in the spotlight. The only reason these Basketball wives are even known is because of what Professional Athlete they were married too or dating. Simple as that.

Where are all the B.E.T. type protest? :noidea:

Im not going to say they werent promiscuous, but you didnt have shows like Teenage mom rooting for and showing how great it is for kids to get pregnant either.

Nope. girls were good girls all before 1981. Why put the blame on parents or even on the kids for not having a mind of their own when u can put the blame on tv stations and fake celebs. thats will solve all of the black community problems.

I graduated from High school in the late 80's, there were 1000 of us that graduated. In that class, I know at least 20-30 chicks who had kids. Let's not get into those abortions or miscarriages. I remember in 1986 at South Dekalb stadium after playing Columbia this flag girl had a mis-carriage on the band bus.

Well, girls were popping out babies long before Teen Mom came along. However, kids have historically emulated what they have seen on TV. From Superman, Tom and Jerry and even professional wrestling. Kids now emulating Reality TV is no surprise at all. It is up to parents and adults to counter balance what kids are exposed to and educate them about those programs and messages.

Many of the things we deem a problem today have always been happening. Like Cee and J4L, I remember the neighborhood freaks and teen moms. I have a number of classmates that are now grandparents because they started having kids when we were in high school. Reality tv is now glorifying this lifestyle and making it look "not so bad".

I have a teen and he watches some of that teen reality crap. I watch it with him and point out how difficult these kids are making their lives by doing some of the things they do. They try so hard to fit in versus just being themselves. They make life way to difficult for themselves.
