TCU's Printers will transfer
01/02/2002

By DAN NOXON / The Dallas Morning News

Quarterback Casey Printers, who has led TCU to bowl games the past three seasons, has asked for his release from the Horned Frogs' football program and will not play his senior season at the school.

Printers issued a release Wednesday, saying he would seek a transfer to one of the following Division I-AA schools: Florida A&M, Southern, Grambling State or Alabama State.

Printers finished his junior season ranked third on TCU's all-time lists for passing yards (4,621) and touchdown passes (37). He has started 32 games in his career and has compiled a 23-9 record.

I heard about his decision to leave on a local sports radio show that is hosted by an alumnus of Togaloo College and Jackson State University. He didn't say where he was considering, but he stated he would have him on his show today (Thursday) to talk about it. I haven't been long getting home and was watching the news after the Orange Bowl and they had him on. They mentioned 4 black schools. SU was the 3rd and I lost it after hearing that. So, I missed the forth. :-) This kid is talented and will be a GREAT asset to whoever he goes to. I don't think he has been happy since the coach that recruited him left after his first year. This says a lot about the kid at JSU. I know if that kids wasn't so good, he would also be looking to go there.

Jaguars,
Remember all of those open receivers that were over thrown in the Classic. That want happen if he comes to the Bluff.
GSU, The WRs are loaded at SU and Hayes could be back. Wow!
If you think you've had a QB the last 3 years, this would be a major upgrade. I'm just not sure who he will be able to throw to with you losing so much.
FAMU,
I'd hate for him to pass up the SWAC and go all the way to Florida. But, we know FAMU will also allow him to feature his talents. You know FAMU will also have the WRs to catch his passes.

I'm definitely calling in to the show and encourage him for his decision.

PEACE!!!

it will be Alabama State, mock my words. LC received a Texas A&M transfer last year and he made All-SWAC. He also got two other QB transfers last year.

The kid is from Texas so I do not know why he wants to leave the state. Sam Houston State could be another possibility because their coach had had success with his last two transfers.

If PV had money, he would be there. All his boys there already.

TPF:
He obviously wants to leave the state because he wants to attend a HBCU. You and I know that when it comes to football, HBCUs in Texas are not highly regarded.

ZNSPR8502,

It amazes me how you think you know so much about the talent we have lost, but know nothing about the talent we have returning. We have WRs! The same question was brought up after Scotty left and we told you all then that we would not lose a step at that position. Nothing has change! We got this kid from Jena who is 6'5...nevermind, I will let you find out for yourself.

Now back to Printers, I was informed about this earlier in the season and promised I would say nothing until it came out. In case you didn't notice, Printers is only looking at HBCUs who have QBs that have played their final season. Hymes, Kennedy, Levy, and Gray are all gone.

The article on this topic in the Montgomery newspaper stated that Printers has been unhappy since Dennis Francione left.

And where did Dennis Francione go?

ALABAMA ! ! !

If this kid misses Francione, he can kill two birds with one stone by transferring to Bama State. He can play immediately at an HBCU, and be only 99 miles from Dennis Francione.

He would also have the opportunity to work with the best two offensive minds in I-AA . . . L.C. and Johnny Cole.

Why in the hell would a grown man want to move closer to his old coach that used to coach him if he's not at that school? Is there a love thang going on? He won't be at Alabama State... he'll be at Grambling. I went to the Galleryfurniturelazyboyreclinercoffeetable.com bowl and talked to the DB (#17) from TCU that returned that interception for a touchdown at a restuarant down the street from the dome and he told me that he's wants to be a G-Man.

Cleb,

Don't be so literal, my friend.

Anyway, whether Printers transfers to Bama State or not is not a big deal. He is only one QB out of many that is considering taking over the HOBO Offense, now that Kennedy is gone.

Sure, we would like to have him, but if he doesn't come, we'll get someone even better. And we'll still be representing the East at the SCG next year.

I hear ya Duece. Good luck in the East next year. But whichever HBCU lands him they will be an instant contender. He didn't have an O-line this year and extract LD from the backfield and that can cause problems too.

one of those suburban Dallas kids who should have went to Carter

he probably would have been at a HBCU in the first place but they see something different in Ducanville. He waits 3 years to leave?

He'a already entrenched as a starter and playing at a HBCU this late could be great if he picks up the offense ASAP but if he cannot get the job then he'll look bad.

I almost made that mistake. I lived in Desoto all through high school, but I chose to go to Carter, because I wanted to march in a black marching band.

It's a-lot of kids around the suburbs that never get a chance to see any HBCU's at their high school's college days. They never really get a chance to get fully exposed to they're already in college.

Why are u guys getting so excited over a QB with only 1 year of eligibility left?? He seems to be pretty decent, but i doubt if he's just gonna come in and set the SWAC on fire.

Question:

Why do some negros get all excited about a black QB from a PWC transferring to a HBCU. He maybe a good QB from a PWC, that does not make him better than the ones already on our "HBCU" rosters.

Daymn, some people are acting like he is going to be the answer to all of your problems, when you need an entire team. If I was him I would call Doug, and ask him "Is there room for me".

He want's to play right away? Now what QB at any HBCU is going to waite another year to start?

Just Asking

IF he transfers to Grambling, he will be allowed to compete for a position. We already have some good qb's in camp, so it will be tough for him to crack the starting lineup.

Even our holder has another year of eligibility...he might be isht out of luck

QB hoping to catch eyes of NFL scouts

By TROY PHILLIPS
STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

FORT WORTH - Citing his desire to be part of a more prolific passing offense, junior quarterback Casey Printers announced Wednesday that he plans to transfer from TCU to a Division I-AA school next season.

Printers said Wednesday he regretted not transferring from TCU after his sophomore season in 2000, the last under former coach Dennis Franchione. Printers cited TCU's offensive philosophy as the reason for his decision to leave.

In three seasons, Printers was 23-9 as a starter, helping lead TCU to three bowl appearances and a share of the 2000 Western Athletic Conference title. He threw for 4,621 yards and 37 touchdowns in three seasons, including 1,824 yards this season.

"It's been festering for over a year," Printers said. "I was told we'd be a 50-50 [pass-run] team and the whole nine yards, but the philosophy has not changed much. When it did, it was only because we had to throw."

Printers said he made his final decision after going to church Sunday, two days after he threw for 144 yards and four interceptions in TCU's 29-8 loss to Texas A&M in the galleryfurniture.com Bowl. He met with coach Gary Patterson Wednesday afternoon, at which time it was uncertain whether his release from TCU would be granted.

In a statement faxed to local media outlets by relatives, Printers listed Grambling State, Southern, Alabama State and Florida A&M as the schools he is considering.

Printers said his decision had nothing to do with Patterson, offensive coordinator Mike Schultz or any of his teammates. He said TCU's offense, which mixes the option with rollout passing schemes, is not suited to prepare him for the NFL.

"I'm looking for, I guess, a variety of passes to throw," he said. "A pro-style system in which I can grow and develop as if I were an actual pro quarterback. Their schemes are not suited for what I want to do."

The schools listed by Printers run wide-open offenses and will enable him to play this fall and not have to sit out a season, as would be the case if he were to transfer to a Division I-A school.

On Wednesday evening, Patterson said TCU "will have no problem releasing [Printers] to the four schools he's asking for, if he stays with that decision." TCU's policy is to not release athletes to transfer to schools in the WAC, Conference USA or Big 12, TCU athletic director Eric Hyman said.

Printers missed the equivalent of two games with a sore shoulder but relieved an injured Sean Stilley in the second half against East Carolina on Oct. 30. In that half, he threw 50 times to lead TCU on a furious second-half rally that fell short 37-30.

Printers threw for 1,159 yards in TCU's final four regular-season games (bowl statistics are not included in individual totals) but said Wednesday he believed that TCU wasn't fully committed to throw first and run second next season.

"I only judge things on wins and losses," Patterson said. "To me, he made progress and didn't even play in two ballgames. We want him to be happy. It's disappointing this type of thing comes up, but I have to close ranks and take care of those who are important to me. If Casey doesn't want to be a part of it, what do you do?"

Printers' pass attempts have increased each season, from 150 in 1999, to 176 in 2000, to 252 this season. TCU threw for more than 2,300 yards this season and ran for a little over 1,300. Printers said he saw progress but had something more in mind.

"I want to have the type of senior season I want," Printers said. "I want to have a chance to throw for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns like David Carr at Fresno State. I don't feel like that opportunity will be at TCU."

TCU offensive coordinator Mike Schultz would only say the situation was "extremely sensitive."

"It's too early in the game for me to say anything," Schultz said.

Junior receiver Adrian Madise transferred to TCU this season from a junior college in Georgia after Printers convinced TCU coaches to sign Madise.

"Casey is doing what he feels is best for him to accomplish his goals of becoming a more prolific passer," Madise said. "He believes he'll have more of a steady coach in Doug Williams [at Grambling State] and learn under one of the best. I think they're the first school on his list."

Madise, who led TCU with 57 catches for 884 yards this season, said "life will go on. As far as another quarterback, whoever gets the nod will be working out with me all summer. I want us to have a really good relationship on the field. I know we will, because I'll light a fire under him."

Printers said he has questioned TCU's offensive philosophy long enough and now needs to "act on what I want to do."

"I can't question it anymore," he said. "Coach Schultz is a great person and great offensive coordinator, but I want an offense that has a passing-first philosophy. I feel like I'm ready for that. If I'm not, then I don't deserve to play the game of football."

H,

Please stop! This has nothing to do with "Negroes" getting excited about a black QB coming from a PWC. The truth of the matter is that it is a big story here in the Dallas area. 1) Because he was a highly recruited QB coming from a Metroplex high school and 2) because he attended a Metroplex college. It isn't just "Negroes" who are making a big deal out of this. The white folk in Fort Worth are pissed that Printers is leaving. And the local media is making a big deal about it. So please leave the "Negroes" out of this. We are simply having a discussion.

and How about some ice with yo' Haterade, sir?

*dez mofos*

Well, I will question his timing. I mean, why would you give probably the best years of your college career to TCU and then with only one year of eligibility left you all of a certain decide that you want to re-connect with your African-American roots? And TCU gives him a release just like that.

I don't think we are being told the real story. What is really going on?

I remember when the coach that recruited him went to Alabama. He was very unhappy and from what I can tell has talked about leaving every since then. I never got the indication that he would consider an HBCU. He and his mother were on a local sports show (hosted by a Tougaloo/JSU alumnus) today. Though they didn't just come out and say it definitely, I got a very strong impression that he is going to Grambling. I'm not sure from my vibes why he mentioned the others. For whatever reason, it is good publicity for HBCUs for him to say he is considering a list of schools that just happen to only be made up of HBCUs. One thing I'm glad his mother said was that he told by the TCU coaches to not talk to anyone else after they had spoken to him and he did it. When they spoke to Doug today and told him that they were going to look at other schools, she said that he told her to look, but that he'll be back to Grambling. That sounds real good. Yet, my hearing him today and my reading some of your post stating he informed you all in September and other times that he was coming to GSU, it doesn't make since for that conversation to have occured.
Question: Is Hymes coming back if he stays on schedule in school? If so, will Printers start or will they share starting rolls or will Doug do a JSU Tayolor/Kent switch?
Where ever he goes, I hope that school allows him to throw the ball and doesn't play switch the QB with him. That could turn out to be some poor publicity for our HBCUs.
For whoever gets him, this could be a major magnet for top recruits to consider your program out of high school.

PEACE!!!

This is major because it helps open more eyes of high school athletes and their parents to the fact that top talent can consider HBCUs. So many of our people believe ice is colder on the side of town that I'm a minority. So, they think the same about the schools to which I'm a minority. Though the best in the sport come from the best schools (HBCUs), somehow the parents and kids think their best option is not where the best came from. This could be a small step towards opening more eyes to the stupid thinking pattern that keeps this Hype alive.

That is why I'M SO EXCITED! I enjoy seeing great talent at HBCUs. That's were they belong. Is this something that excites you?

PEACE!!!

I am glad that the QB is considering going to an HBCU. I too hope that this move will open up the eyes of other high school athletes. But I also know that it will take a lot more than this to cause better athletes to come to our schools. For instance, Miami was helped a whole lot by their Rose Bowl performance. Tennessee, LSU, and Texas were not hurt by their bowl performances either when it comes to recruiting.

If he does enroll in an HBCU (I am still holding my breath.), we can't let this story do the public relations work by itself. We, grads and administrators, will have to do some work in getting this kids into our schools too. Even with Michael Strahan, Steve McNair, Avery Johnson, Jimmy Smith and Jackie Slater (being inducted into the Hall of Fame last year), it is not nearly enough. Many kids still want to attend the big schools.
