Taylor leads GSU award winners
GRAMBLING -- The honors keep rolling in for Grambling State linebacker Robert Taylor and his fellow Tigers.
Taylor has been named a first-team linebacker on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's All- Louisiana Collegiate Team while also being named a first-team I-AA All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
The 6-4, 255-pound native of Birmingham, Ala., had previously been named a first-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference and second-team AP All-American linebacker.
Taylor led Grambling with 81 total tackles, including 44 solos and led the SWAC in forced fumbles with four. He also played in the Kelly Tires Blue-Gray All-Star Classic on Christmas day.
"I can't say enough about how hard Robert has worked and what he's meant to this team," Grambling coach Doug Williams said. "He's deserving of every honor he gets."
Grambling had several players earning second-team All-Louisiana accolades with offensive linemen Larry Metevia and William Jackson being named along with running back Brad Hill, defensive backs Calvin Spears and Chris Brown and kicker Brian Morgan.
Tigers picking up All-Louisiana honorable mention were defensive linemen Willie Gray and return specialist Kendrick Shanklin.
Grambling also had a host of players other than Taylor being honored by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Metevia and Brown both were named second team All-Americans while free safety Denmark Reed was a third-team selection.
Picking up All-America honorable mention by Don Hansen's Football Gazette for the Tigers were wide receiver Levi Washington, quarterback Randy Hymes, offensive lineman Terry Riley, strong safety Kalvin Pearson, Hill, Jackson, Spears, Morgan and Shanklin.
"I think it says a lot about this program to have all of these players being honored," Williams said. "They're the ones who worked hard with the help and guidance from of all our coaches and went out and won two straight championships. Now they get to reap some of the benefits, but I also hopes it's just helping provide a foundation to keep building on."
