SWAC's Postseason Request Allows Transitioning Schools into League Postseason

The folks who voted on the hard stance are no longer there now. It is no different than a new congress or court coming in and making a ruling that is different from the previous group.

It does not make any difference who voted on what. Some standards should be put in place. If you are guilty of failing APR sanctions one year I can see the conference waiving the ban IF you agree to some stipulations and improve the next year. But some of these schools are bad year after year after year and to the SWAC, that's okay. There is nothing remotely right about that. Last year for the bball tourney.. okay.. let the teams compete but AT LEAST tell them that if their scores don't improve next year, they will be sitting at home. As it stands, the SWAC is doing nothing to assist with APR.

I hope that TP is dumb because ALL of you all can't be the same type of dumb. This is a totally different issue than the one the SWAC made with our APR casualites and SUs ummmm "problems". Why did TT try to link the two together. TP is so confused.

Under the former rule, a conference lost its NCAA tournament automatic bid if an ineligible team won the league tournament. The new policy allows conferences to award the highest-ranked finisher the automatic qualifier, meaning if NKU wins an A-Sun tourney before its reclassification is finished, then the team it defeats inherits the NCAA bid.

What concerns me is the issue of poor performance in the classroom and staff that are not app lying the pressure on the students. It's like the emphasis on education is not neccesarily there. In layman's term and correct me if I'm wrong but if you have a low APR rate that means that student athletes are not making adequate progress toward their degree. Therefore forcing student athletes not to enroll in basketweaving etc... but courses that progress them to graduating.

That being said if there are schools that are not in a position to do so, it is an insult to schools that are not in violation to raise a trophy on their success on the field/court but lack the academic performance.

I look at it like this MONEY before academics. You have 6 schools that cannot compete in post season means 6 different groups of supporters that will not show up....MONEY at the end of the day.

Look up the APR guidelines/calculations before you make your determination. Also, look at how some of the big schools are staying eligible and what resources and loopholes they use to get there even with players who are no smarter than what we have in the SWAC (UNC, FSU, LSU, etc).

There are so many dumb schools in this conference we really need this rule. Now that BamaState is academically ineligible there are at least 5 basketball teams academically inadequate.

So we black we dumb we need the bar lowered to compete because we can't meet minimum standards. I say that every black school should take the money wasted on compliance departments and go buy Jordans and longer weave for the dancers.

Thanks NCAA for lowering the bar....we needed it

Your school received welfare from the NCAA to improve APR. Shut the hell up.

apr is sketchy to begin with...PV does not accept Ds for transfers while other schools will in the conference...PV doesn't have general studies to roll athletes into as I know several players who could not match their JC transcripts to PV's curriculum but they head over elsewhere and are eligible

each school uses it differently...it's worse the bigger you get...it's easier in some cases for athletes to enroll in the Big 12 than to go elsewhere because the other schools aren't creating majors for athletes

those athletes are getting in with admit exceptions and can only major in what they tell them to because they should not be there by normal standards...alot of schools do it but these kids want to compare academics when SWAC schools get caught in a PWC recruiting battle

Agree with what you said but especially the bolded. That's why what the Big 12 commissioner said the other day was laughable. We know they are cheating but he didn't give specifics as to how and who. The only people who are keeping this stuff in the lime light somewhat is Outside The Lines.

That's what makes most laugh at flip flops and the crew who cosign that mess. Assuming (name calling) someone is dumb in the SWAC is one thing.

We KNOW these cats at UNC can't even read at the level of my 5th grade nephew.

Some of the schools in your own conference are staying eligible, with the same resources now what? Before I actually discuss this, can someone please break the article down because I have something to say but I don't wanna look dumb lol Because the article sounds like a loop hole to get past Apr guidelines by creating your own?!?

Reform effects
On football
There are many questions regarding how the NCAA will enforce the new policy for football. The Bowl Championship Series is its own entity and decides the college football postseason, thus making them the governing body for college football. President Gary Ransdell said there is uncertainty on how the new standard relates to the BCS. "The BCS is an independently run enterprise, yet it involves NCAA member institutions," he said. "So does this 930 rule also determine eligibility for BCS games? I think that's yet to be ironed out."[12]

Some NCAA institutions participate in football leagues, other than the BCS, which are organized by the NCAA and these reforms would apply to. In the 2011-12 academic year there were 17 teams in the FBS league with APRs below 930 and 37 teams in the FCS league. If these programs do not find a way to improve their APR then they will suffer postseason bans.[13]

On men's basketball
The APR's flaws are highlighted in men's basketball. "Syracuse's Jim Boeheim suffered the two-scholarship hit last summer, and in doing so publicly upbraided the APR for taking into account the departures of Eric Devendorf, Jonny Flynn and Paul Harris for the NBA draft, all three of whom left campus to prepare for the NBA event without fulfilling their spring semester requirements."[14] Many college basketball players leave before they graduate, and the ones that leave in bad academic standing cause the APR to go down. This issue is seen throughout college basketball.

To exemplify this phenomenon for collegiate basketball, if the 930 postseason ban had been in effect for the 2011-12 season then 99 teams would have received postseason bans.[13] Clearly, the new postseason policy must become a high priority for basketball programs or many of them will not be competing in NCAA sponsored championships

Potential Misinterpretations
While the numbers represented in the APR have a certain significance, there can be misrepresentations for people unfamiliar with what the APR is showing. For example, the APR only applies to students that receive athletic financial aid, which is by no means all varsity athletes at a university.[19] NCAA's 1,265 member colleges and universities report that they have more than 355,000 student-athletes playing each year. Approximately 36% of these NCAA student-athletes receive a share of the $1 billion earmarked for athletic scholarships.[20] Another common misuse of the data occurs when APR results are compared between universities. This is usually not a valid comparison unless it is viewed alongside the graduation rates for non athletes at the institution. For example, one institution may have an APR representing that only 50% of athletes are on track to graduate which seems like athletes are under performing at the university. However, if the graduation rate for non-athletes is also 50% then the low graduation rate for the athletes is not a student-athlete problem, but a university wide problem.[21] Furthermore, it is not always relevant to compare APR scores across universities because the academic rigors between universities differ. For example, at some high performing academic universities freshman struggle with eligibility because the workload is hard to deal with initially, but in the end, those students find academic success.[17]

If you are talking about the article the first post, it has nothing to do with APR.. AT ALL (Thanks MH).

See, what you really dont want to understand is, when JSU had APR issues we hired an APR expert. She knew people, knew how to apply for grants, and knew people in places that could help. Now JSU is in the clear with the NCAA with no APR issues.

SU on the other hand hired someone with no D1 athletic experience whose resume did not match the job description. What happened? His performance was so poor the NCAA told him to get out of their office and banned SU from all NCAA activities. Your whole athletic department has been kicked out of the NCAA. But Im sure your think he is doing a GREAT job.

STILL totally different topics. If the SWAC had not let teams like SU in the tourney, THIS other rule would have still passed. #totallyunrelated

You know what TP? You're right, and I'm an idiot for thinking any differently.

I yield to your superior intellect.

Absolutely no truth to this. For the last damn time. Our APR is fine. Nothing is wrong with the current APR. We are banned because our last regime didn't do their job and the new regime can't go back and fix what was not done for 7 years. You can't be this slow. Stump teams had no APR issues once he righted the ship. Then Broussard came in and continued to work with others. Banks is having good APR with the Basketball Jags. We aint banned for the isht the NEW FOLKS DID. We are banned for the stupid isht the old ADMIN did. Hiring an APR expert would have not helped JSU either if yall had no folks keeping adequate records during your APR problems. At least JSU had folks to make sure the bad grades were documented. Our past regime did not do a damn thing. Viv couldn't done no more than Broussard did.

Let me explain to you again GR. SU APR is not an ISSUE. One more time. Say it with me. SU APR is not an issue. Our teams are meeting the grade. They are being penalized for the mofos that came WAYYYYYYY before them.

You hired a APR expert and counselors with the 1 million dollar welfare you got from the NCAA.

That's no excuse. Duer's still there and the President's usually follow his suggestions.
This is another stain on Black colleges.

Save your breath, you're talking to the parrot

Dude please. There's no way you can take a stand for academics yet at the same time agree with lowering the bar because a FEW schools can't cut it. Keep lowering the standards and there won't be any academic requirements to play sports.

Kids usually rise to the expectations of grown folks for the most part but if those grown folks lower the bar, the kids will lower the bar. It's not rocket science.

Damn what the big schools are doing. Look at what your fellow SWAC brothers and sisters are doing and mimick THEM.

Did the other schools receive help? Lots of times it's not all about money. It's about putting in place standards on your campus and daring the players not to follow those standards.

The bar is lowered , every time somebody makes an attempt to communicate, with someone from JSU.
