SWAC Volleyball

So I found some clips of a sports network interviewing SWAC volleyball coaches for the upcoming 2017 season and it just reminded me of my frustrations.

I'm a big volleyball fan mainly due to my high school experience. My high school (during my time, no longer) had one of the best volleyball program in the state and our games were very popular. So from that point on I was a volleyball fan and learned a lot about the game.

Now, the quality of volleyball in the SWAC is very disappointing. I guarantee my high school team back then could've beat our SWAC Champions. The lack of sophisticated offenses/defenses, off season conditioning is obviously a joke, the coaches obviously don't know what they are doing, even our champions get whooped by almost every mediocre OOC opponent and isn't really competitive outside the SWAC (i.e. Grambling a DI team lost to NAIA's Wiley College last year, that's not suppose to happen). It's a pain to watch them play ... bad passes, bad blocking, bad hitting, bad everything is the norm.

Volleyball is our worst sport as a conference and we need to hold them to a higher standard so things can change.

MEAC Champion Howard University defeated Clemson, Georgetown, UPenn, George Mason, and almost beat Notre Dame last year. Also Howard University 2017 recruiting class was ranked in the top 50 in the nation. So HBCUs can compete with strong programs, we just need the right leadership in place

Marina Bianchi is a 6’1” freshman, Middle Blocker, from Sorocaba, Brazil. Since 2012, Marina has played on teams representing the City of Sorocaba, as well as regional leagues resulting in 1st place victories. In 2015, was name MVP in the High School Games of Sorocaba. After moving to Vancouver, Marina’s high school team finished 2nd place in the Vancouver Island Championship, moving on to the High School Provincials, while playing for Woodlands Secondary School. In 2016, her team placed 3rd in the Vancouver Islands Championship. She also played club, making it to Club Provincials representing Mariner’s volleyball club.
Marina is a talented middle blocker with the skills level that we hope will provide an immediate impact to our program, both offensively and defensively. She is also a scholar student athlete with a 3.8 GPA, planning to major in Business/Economics.


Camry Dabney is a 6’0” freshman, Outside and Right Side Hitter from Cypress Ranch High School in Cypress, TX. In high school she made 1st Team All-District her junior and senior years; two years 1st Team Academic All-District 17-6A; Team Captain; and 4 year letterman. Her team was a 2015-16 Regional Finalis; and 2016-17 Regional Finalist Runner Up. As a scholar athlete, Camry is a member of the National Honor Society; Math National Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta); Social Studies National Honor Society (Pho Kappa); and Jack and Jill of America, Inc.

As a member of the Houston Jrs. Volleyball Club, the team made it to the 2013 Junior Nationals (2nd Place-USA); 2014 MEQ Indiana (1st Place-USA); 2014 Junior Nationals-Minneapolis (1st Place); and 2015 Lone Star Qualifier (1st Place). In 2015, Camry was named on the AVCA Phenom List.................

AAMU VB was dominant for a long time under Betty Austin. Kinda wish she would come back to coach the team, but I understand.

after Betty Austin left.. the A&M vball dynasty was no more.

Betty Austin always had talented & beautiful women on her team throughout her career at A&M...

Betty we wish you would come back...pleaseeeee lol

I remember meeting some of the ladies on her team when they came to TSU. Sweet as honey and gorgeous too ... they ran the SWAC back then despite lacking real height. AAMU country fed girls were hitting the hell out the ball LOL

You went on a rant about SWAC volleyball being bad, and now you question why everyone isn't interested. If you want folks to be pay attention, maybe don't say the product "is our worst sport" in the conference.

If I wanted to see a young, athletic woman in short-shorts, all I have to do is look at my woman in them.

1) I never questioned why everyone isn't interested ... and I was just joking around with you..
2) It is one of our worst sports but so is football but people still pay a lot of attention to it. We have the worst OOC FCS record of any FCS conference which is why we stop going to the FCS playoffs. Basketball and Baseball are our best and most competitive sports but get way less attention than football ... we're backwards.

That don't mean it's right or make sense. But of course UK, Gonzaga, Duke, and a few other schools actually pay more attention to basketball than football .... but yeah get your point.

incorrect... Nedra Brown won multiple championships after Austin retired.

Volleyball is not our worst sport... SOCCER is definitely our worst sport.

Howard doesn't save anything lol. They did so much saving that they got eliminated by UAPB last year in the SWAC tourney and got smoked in the NCAA tourney in 2015 (after a double OT against Valley in the semis).

Simmons led the NCAA in goals (27) in 2015 (making the NCAA regional team which no other SWAC player has ever made) and Issaka ended the regular season as the leader. Other SWAC programs like ASU and PV have improved

The SWAC is poo in volleyball and it shows. Until schools invest in it like they have softball we'll continue to be poo
