SWAC title races update: AAMU, Prairie View control their destinies

Listen up maggots! And that's an order!
With five weeks left in the regular season, nobody in the SWAC has been eliminated. Only two teams hold their fate in their own hands.

In the East, Alabama A&M is the team to beat in the standings, because the Bulldogs own the tiebreaker that matters most. Their 55-17 rout of Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 10 means that if A&M wins its last four games, starting with the Magic City Classic against Alabama State on Oct. 31, the division is theirs. The Wildcats, though, have the most paths to the East title. Bethune-Cookman’s 24-21 upset of Jackson State on Saturday tied it with A&M at 3-1. If the Wildcats win out, they only need A&M to slip up once. Jackson State’s loss dropped it to 3-2, and the Tigers now need A&M to lose once and BCU to lose twice. Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State are both 2-2, and both are pulling for Bethune-Cookman to drop two games down the stretch. Florida A&M, at 1-3, is hanging on by a thread.

The West race is more crowded but has a clearer front-runner. Prairie View A&M, the defending champion, has already beaten Grambling and Alcorn State. If the Panthers win their last three games, they clinch the West, and their Nov. 14 trip to Arkansas-Pine Bluff stands out as the game that matters most. Behind them, three 2-2 teams each have one obstacle. UAPB needs Alcorn to lose once. Grambling needs Prairie View to lose once. Alcorn needs both of those teams to stumble. Southern and Texas Southern, both 1-3, would need to win out and then get a lot of help.

Alabama A&M’s Nov. 7 trip to Prairie View connects the two races. The two teams that control their own destiny meet in a game that could shape both divisions, and possibly decide who hosts the SWAC Championship Game on Dec. 5.

The West could be settled in Pine Bluff on Nov. 14. A Prairie View win over UAPB all but clinches the division, while a Golden Lions win flips the race and revives Grambling and Alcorn. A week earlier, Alabama A&M visits Prairie View in a cross-division game between the only two teams in control of their own destiny, with the loser giving up that control. Bethune-Cookman’s month is the subplot to follow. Each of its four games carries title stakes, and every Wildcat loss gives Jackson State another way back in.

Prairie View controls the West, but it faces the league’s hardest remaining path. Its last three opponents are a combined 7-5 in conference play, and two of those games are on the road. Bethune-Cookman has the easiest: no remaining opponent has a winning SWAC record, and they’re a combined 6-10. That soft finish makes the Wildcats a serious threat, even though they need Alabama A&M to slip. Alabama A&M’s schedule ranks ninth of 12, which helps it hold its narrow edge.

I could be wrong, but I seriously don't see Alabama A&M slipping up.

I honestly said the same about J. State & thought maybe Alcorn could pull off a crazy rivalry win . Hope you're right because Bama A&M owes Gram a solid for clipping J State for them.
