OK...here is a question for those of you who have a problem with the new SWAC rule.

If this rule sucks so bad, what do you recommend be done knowing that there is a problem that has to be fixed. It was stated in the press release that their were complaints about the band playing while calling signals.

So knowing this...what do you do?

the rule suck. I was at the SU vs MVSU game and I sit right next to vally band and rule suck bigtime. Not once did southern play defense jags defense. and the game was super boring. Maybe it was because the game itself was a blowout but you can tell the band directors was playing close attention to the rules. Lets be real swacfootball is not too great and now you (swac) take away one of the biggest reason some fans go to the game.

didnt I already post something? Let the band directors or a band representative get together with someone from the SWAC and make rules that both sides can agree with.

Once the fans stop going to these games, esp those "high Dollar" classics, will they change these rules.

Why do the band directors have to meet? Why can't they just discipline themselves to work within the rules?

all i know i miss southern band cheering at the game with defense jags defense and fire up su fire up

So why can the fans do the same without the band?

See, all I hear is excuses, but ain't none of you providing any answers.

You work in unison with the band...

The band cranks out a snippet or intro to a song during the allowed timeframe... the minute the band stops playing, the fans come with their chants and cheers... when the play ends the band cranks up another song until the teams break the huddle... when the team breaks the huddle the fans start cheering again. Fans have gotten to dependent on the bands to get crunked.

Here's another idea... let the band get to the game early and do their funk train or whatever it is going to the stands well enuff before the game and start blowing and showing. Play all you want pre-game...ain't a soul gonna stop you. In fact, I bet folks would come on in early and your school might sell some more concessions. Even thing different doesn't have to be bad!

Quick question. What is the purpose of a band? If you look hard bands didn't perform for halftime when they first started. When you get the answer to that then you can answer your own question. :swink:

For the idiots in the swac office, the bands should just stay in the bandroom or on the bus until halftime, then do the halftime show, then leave. After the swac office buffoons see what they have done to our conference by trying to whiten it up! the bottom line is money makes the world go round, and next year when the classics aren't calling and the stadiums are thin, and Southern is the only school turning a profit, they'll try to figure out where we went wrong, and then try to "make games more fun." So maybe in 4 or 5 years they will come up with a novel idea that games should be fun, and the band is fun! Hopefully kids will still want to be in bands in 2013.

I get it now.. You're playing devils advocate... I cant believe I almost missed it.

He's not playing Devils Advocate, he hates the bands.....

Remember he conspired with Kenn to get the band forum deleted. (runs out of thread fast)

If you want answers, here are somethings that I think can be done.

1) REMOVE THAT ALTERNATING PLAYING CRAP!!! IF YOU'RE NOT READY TO PLAY AT THE RIGHT TIME AND THE OTHER BAND CRANKS UP BEFORE YOU, TOUGH ISHT!!!

2) Bands should be allowed to play within a reasonable volume as long as the teams are not directly in front of them or they aren't turned in the direction of the football teams. Even then, when the teams go to the huddle, the volume must be brought down to give the teams an opportunity to hear the play call. The volume should remain low until the ball is snapped or a timeout or penalty is called.

3) If the teams are in front of the bands, instruments should not be played while the team is in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage. Once the ball has been snapped, bands are free to play until the teams return to the huddle or, if a team is running a no-huddle offense, when they get to the line of scrimmage. An exception to this rule should be percussion. Percussion sections are allowed to play if the teams are directly in front of the bands provided that they bring the volume down while the teams are in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage. Once the ball is snapped, normal playing is allowed until the teams return to the huddle or, if a team is utilizing the no-huddle, when the teams approach the line of scrimmage.

4) Sectional "challenges" or "fanfares" are to follow the same rules as the percussion section provided they are playing prior to the teams getting in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage. If they haven't started playing before the team gets to the huddle or the line of scrimmage, they must wait until the ball is snapped.

5) Violation of these rules with constitute the following:
  1. First offense- Verbal warning to the band(s) by the officiating crew
  2. Second offense- Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the band with a 10 yard penalty assessed against the team of the violating band.
  3. Third offense- Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the band and a 15 yard penalty assessed to the team. This is the band's final warning.
  4. Fourth offense- Band is ejected from the game and must leave the stands immediately. The SWAC Office shall suspend the offending band for 1 game and place them on a "probationary" status for the remainder of the year.
  5. Any further offenses by a band under "probationary" status shall have said band suspended 5 games. Suspensions can carry over into non-SWAC games as well as carry over into the next season. If you're on probation at the last game of the year and you break the rules, your suspension carries over into the first game of the next year. If you're serving a 5 game suspension and only 3 games are left in the season, you will serve the remainder of the suspension the first two games of the next season. This includes "Classic" games (Labor Day Classic, Circle City Classic, Magic City Classic, Capital City Classic, Bayou Classic, etc.).
  6. Repeat offenders will be noted. Let's say that a band gets the second offense penalty 3 games straight. If they get a second offense on the 4th consecutive game, they shall be ejected from the game and serve an automatic 1 game suspension and be placed on "probationary" status the remainder of the year.

I think my rules are actually harder on bands than what they have in place but it also gives the bands the chance to actually play at the games and keep playing as long as they bring the volume down when the football teams aren't directly in front of them. Heyell, I'm even giving each band 4 times to get their act together in a game.

Here is an interesting clip that, I think, sums up the essence of our bands!
BTW, I found the link to be "hit and miss" so you may have to try more than once to get to it.

very good summary... this rules sucks the life out of that which is the V8 of the life of SWAC football. Oh well, we'll see how right or wrong we all are in 4 to 6 weeks. I can't imagine how this is going to drain the energy of the Bayou Classic.

Peace...

To support the football team.

But that still doesn't answer the question.

He is right. I am not playing devil's advocate and I don't hate the bands. I love the bands. It is what makes (not just HBCU, but) college football what it is.

The sad part about all of this is that you guys act as the problem did not exist. How many times over the years have we talked about how the bands played while team called their signals. It's amazing how I see people talk about the word "discipline" when describing bands but for some reason could never discipline themselves to play within the rules of the game. But that is not your fault. It is the fault of all your sorry ass band directors who have misguided you into believing that you have wronged when fact of the matter is they have been wrong all along.

Now, for you SU band folks. I really don't see this being a difficult transition for you guys. I have always giving you guys "thumbs up" for the way you ALWAYS (and please correct me if I am wrong), play your school fight song every single time your team either scores a TD or makes a first down. And you guys always seen to finish it up between downs. That is the way it should be done with all bands if you ask me. This will not be difficult for you guys to do.

ZN please...that game is too dayum intense. No need to be dramatic! Hell, both bands get an entire night to themselves before the game to battle as long as they want.

At least someone took a stab at it.

However Antroy, this would violate the NCAA rule. The bands are not to play at all while signals are being called.

I will say this much though about this SWAC rule after giving it more thought.

The SWAC office didn't have to go to this extent in adding their own band rules. They should have simply required SWAC officiating crews to simply start enforcing the existing rule created by the NCAA.

But I will give them credit for taking some kind of action.

The night before has nothing to do with the game. I think we are talking about totally different stuff, for whatever reason. I guess some folks don't understand the advantages of having bands and cheerleaders at their athletic events. So, there is no need to continue to discuss things if it is going to done in 2008 Presidential Race mindset. The rules are there and the environment of the games will become what they will become and those who demanded it will have what they desire.

It want be difficult. But, it will be very different. Currently, the understanding is that you play during your team's offensive drive. Now, they don't play until there is a timeout. Therefore, no support for the team on a drive, defensively or offensively, and you have to make sure the refs feel it is your time to play during a timeout when you do or you will be handle in a SWAC manner. Our school's band program's reputation should not be subjected to a play by play decisioning power of SWAC refs and the SWAC office. Talking about a deaf sentence without a lawyer... nope... not worth it. Play before the game, halftime and a couple songs after the game and go home. It isn't worth the risk to do otherwise.

Peace...

the next thing will be that the crowd can't cheer until the 1st timeout and the cheerleaders can only cheer in practice......this is stupid.....bands, fans, cheerleaders, etc.....do what they do when the time calls for it during a game.....it provides a lift to the game and to the teams they are supporting during certain times of the game......this needs to be revisited and then thrown in the trash.....just my $.02........

Let's not get carried away. You can't use artifical noise (band) when the QB is calling signals. Cheerleaders and fans are natural noise. Therefore the opposing offense has to deal with it.
