SWAC Rules Part 2.

Then you risk not having a band at all. No student wants to join a band that does not perform.

Besides, the presidents will not allow it.

OK... Cali/Big D/Boss....

Think about it then.... What sense does it make to put in all the work that it take to prepare for your opponent across the field, if I need a lawyer present to defend you when a ref, who should be paying attention to the game and who has been doing a horrible job only keeping track of the game, now decides that I'm going to try and determine if the band is playing out of turn or not? And decide, incorrectly, that they are and that band gets reported and the SWAC says they can't go to their next game that they really don't want to miss, for one reason or another.

I'm telling you folks are already noticing it. There were a number of callers on SU's post game show asking what was up with the band not playing or for playing so little. MVSU didn't show up. But, the rules say, they can only play at specific points that don't always match when the crowd is wonder why its band isn't into the game. So, they are making the bands look bad to its fans when they are present. It is better for them to be at home and make it real easy to decide why it is so quiet in the stadium, especially traveling with 200 - 400 mouths that are being feed 3 times a day, plus hotel, plus bus rental which includes todays highly inflated gas prices. All because some wimpee folks say the bands are interrupting the game.

I've been to high school games for two straight weeks. Guess what? I heard those prodimately white high school bands playing all game. In fact, my home town's band (Rowlett) reminds me of USC in the stands. Them mostly white boys and girls are playing, dancing, cheering, the whole game. This is what we did in the 80s. We cheered for our team the entire game - offensive and defensive cheers. Big plays, we played our fight song or another school song. Timeouts either we or our opponent would play a jam.

I truly don't know why so much energy is put into these rules. If you have problem directors/bands, handle them at your school with the leadership of your administration and alumni or Commissioner, Directors and university Presidents/Chancellors should meet and address it directly with those renegade directors who don't understand they are at the game to support their teams, not just blow and beat at their opposing band.

Ole G, I've been to State Fair Classics. It does not destract from the game for me. i watch ever play of the game and I heard each song, each fanfare, each cadence. Now, when the game becomes a blow out, which hasn't happened in a couple of years, they can literally say to heck with the game. But, at that point, folks are leaving the game and going to the fair anyway. So, who cares... I'm still watching every play and listening to every song, fanfare and cadence.

Now, I have seen a band or two that was so hyped to be in Mumford Stadium (say Bama State) until it appears for a quarter that they don't realize they are at a football game, until they realize SU isn't responding to them, but playing or cheering for the Jaguar football team. But, it is rare. Nothing worth these excessive ruling.

I thought republicans were running this country. Doesn't that mean less government regulations?

Peace...

After showing you the facts. You still want to argue.

It is not just a SWAC rule. It is a NCAA rule as well. Our bands (and tbf gave you a video example) have been breaking the rules.

Period.

No you have not shown any facts about these rules the swac has implemented are in fact NCAA rules. They are not in the handbook!

Show me in that book where it states when what band can play at certain times during the game.

Its a damn shame what these new folks are doing to our conference :smh: . When you take the atmosphere away from our games and folks stop coming, I guess yall will be happy  . Once they leave it will be hard as hell to get them back. Damn near every caller on SU's post game show, spoke on the band not playing, and firing the crowd up like they usually do @ SU. Boooooo to the SWAC commish.

The SWAC has taken the NCAA rules, and added their own verbage to them. Enforcement of one part was needed (playing after breaking the huddle...that part is NCAA). Telling bands they have to alternate playing, and only at timeouts is all SWAC. I swear at ever USC, Florida St., and probably even Texas game, you will hear a song between every play.

The "songs" they play between plays are 10-15 seconds at most. Not many SWAC bands cut off like that.

This is very true. One caller stated how boring the game was to him even though they won by a blowout.

I see it's not just us. It was so quiet last week, you could hear a rat piss on cotton at our game.

Yep....

Here a few replys that was posted on the article from the front page.

I?ve reviewed the SWAC?s new ?administrative procedures? for bands. Although they may have been well intended, they reflect an obvious uniformed or misinformed opinion by SWAC leadership. At best it is a misguided attempt to correct a non existing problem; at worst, it speaks to a capriciousness which does not serve the best interest of member schools or their fans. It screams, rule by fiat! (I will do this BECAUSE I CAN!!)

I am hard pressed to recall a situation involving a band continuing to play after being warned by a game official. If and when such a warning is ignored, the appropriate action is to apply the penalty called for by NCAA rule. Where was the great outcry that drove the SWAC to take such unprecedented action?

I am a season ticket holder. I drive 6.5 hours, one way, to attend EVERY home game of my team. I will not stop supporting my team, but this is another instance which reinforces my lack of support for current SWAC leadership.

How can SWAC leaders be so out of touch with its constituency? How can SWAC leaders knowingly neuter a marquee conference asset? They need only listen to comments of national braodcast commentators extol ?the atmosphere of excitement? generated by the school band at HBCU and SWAC games especially.

It is a serious misjudgment, on their part, to believe they are just uplifting and enlightening a ?backward? group of sycophants, who will go along with every decree issued. I believe the appropriate action for responsible fans to take is to let school leaders know, these new procedures unnecessarily restrict the contribution of SWAC bands, to the unique essence and spirit of a SWAC game.

I suggest school newspapers, student groups, alumni associations and all other concerned groups and individuals take the time to contact their school leaders by letter, e-mail or petition and make it clear that these new procedures are unwarranted and unwelcomed. The ultimate result will be to render SWAC games ?. . . clean as a Safeway chittlin?; pleasing to the eye but NO FLAVOR!

I have been going to HBCU games since the age of one. The battle of the bands is a part of our rich history. I understand that the teams need to hear the calls, just don?t understand why it has become a problem. Is it that the young players listen to such LOUD music daily , which has challenged their hearing.

I was at the Alcorn game with the silent band and not sure if I will be renewing my season tickets after this year.
IT?S NOT THE SAME!!!!

Gott Dayum Man!!!! Did you not read the isht I just posted up there...it came from the NCAA hand book. I even provided the dayum link.

6. Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals (Rule 1-1-6).

What part of this is not clear?

If you can't play while a QB is calling the signals, common sense would indicated that it would have to be between plays. Come on man...I know you are a band head and all (a old ass band head at that ) but you are better than this man.

NO WHERE IN THE NCAA HANDBOOK DOES IT SAYS THIS:

the visiting band be allowed to perform during the first dead-ball, team or official timeout. The home team band will be allowed to play during the next dead-ball, team or official timeout. From that point on, both the visiting team and home team bands shall alternate playing during breaks in play for the rest of the contest. At no time are both bands allowed to play simultaneously during the game.

1st Timeout - Visiting Team Band

2nd Timeout - Home Team Band

3rd Timeout - Visiting Team Band

4th Timeout - Home Team Band

5th Timeout - Visiting Team Band

6th Timeout - Home Team Band

Time for the bands to start playing nothing but fanfares.

From the time the play ends to the time they break the huddle, this will give you about 20-25 seconds.

Since they can do that according to the swac rules.

Once the offensive team breaks the ?Huddle? and approaches the line of scrimmage the band shall cease playing.

Dude...I never said the SWAC's rule was in the NCAA handbook. Those are the SWAC's rules. My argument has been (and still is) that SWAC/HBCU bands have been ignoring this rule for years...and it has finally come to bite you guys in the ass!

Now...I will say this much. The SWAC could have simply said that going forward the SWAC officials will enforce the rule as indicated in the NCAA handbook.

See...now your getting it. Fanfares are a good thing.

but what if the team can hear their signal? is the rule enforced only if someone complains?

but what if the team can hear their signal? is the rule enforced only if someone complains?

You mean can't right?

If they can't hear the signal and it is due to natural crowd noise then they have to deal with it.

If that is what you're asking.

This is very true. One caller stated how boring the game was to him even though they won by a blowout.

And it will only get worse. Imagine having two bands at a game. It will be like neither one of them are there.

I see it's not just us. It was so quiet last week, you could hear a rat piss on cotton at our game.

Man, the fans that are complaining about being bored simply need to get of their asses and make some crowd noise. Hell, start cheering for your fukking team.

I mean if the team can hear the signal even with the band playing...is the rule enforced?

the defense jags chant is hardly anything to block out an audible on the field...it that's a problem then we're in trouble...

the next thing will be that the crowd can't cheer until the 1st timeout and the cheerleaders can only cheer in practice......this is stupid.....bands, fans, cheerleaders, etc.....do what they do when the time calls for it during a game.....it provides a lift to the game and to the teams they are supporting during certain times of the game......this needs to be revisited and then thrown in the trash.....just my $.02........

Ahhh...I see what you mean. Yes, the rule is to be enforced even if the team can hear the signal. The band is not to play at all.

As for your example with SU and their chant, all the band has to do is begin the chant after the play ends...just before the team break the huddle for the next play, the band can't start the chant (using the drums) and then lay off the drums (as the team is getting into formation) but continue the chant. That would be perfectly legal.
