SWAC Players of the Week - WTF??

Not to take anything away from the young man from Southern - but how can Richard Rowe not even get a 'other notable performance' mention? One punt return for a TD, set up another TD with a return to the 3 yd line, blocked a field goal that was returned for a TD and caused a fumble? Man please - on top of that, tell me I am mistaken and a player from Gram got defensive player of the week - and they were off this week. Ronald Dillon had 14 tackles - 5 solo, 4 tackles for losses and 3 qb sacks - THIS WEEKEND.

IMO!!!

It's because you weren't playing a SWAC team! This wasn't a conference game!

Players of the WeeK

What is the criteria for SWAC players of the week! Explanation please!!

Defensive Player
Kenneth Pettway (DL)- Grambling State- 6-4, 235, Sr., Houston, TX
Although the Tigers lost 29-0 to San Jose State in the season opener August 23, Pettway had a total of 11 tackles (5 solo), and 3 tackles for a loss of 9 yards.

ASU Linebacker Ronald Dillon finished the game with fourteen tackles (5 solo) with 4 TFL (30) and 3 sacks (26).

Specialist
Ezra Landry (KR/PR)- Southern- 5-4, 160, Sr., New Orleans, LA
Landry started the season off right for the Jaguars by returning the opening kickoff, 83 yards for a touchdown. He also returned two punts for 4 yards. The touchdown was the first in Landry?s college career as a kick returner.

The Hornet?s capitalized on two Richard Rowe punt returns, a 51 yarder for a TD and a 63 yarder to the FAMU 3 yd line. On the game, Richard Rowe gained 179 yds in returns (123 pr, 54 kor), blocked a FG attempt that resulted in a touchdown and forced a fumble.

Not so Mike, we've have players of the week before and it not be a conf. game.

Even though I'm glad for Ezra that is kind of mess up, I would have thought Rowe would have gotten it too.

JaFus you do pose a good question. Hmmmmm :D

Mike - Gram's game against San Jose was not a conference game either.

As for the SID sending in info, I would assume he did since the GAME WRITE UP is given on the front page also - with Rowe's and Dillons stats in the game recap.

In that case, the office dropped the ball.

Opps news flash!!!

Ezra run did make #4 in espn's top plays of the week, just a thought.

Blue - I dont have a problem with that, I mentioned at the start of this post I was not trying to take anything away from Ezra - and while he made 1 play Richard had a hand in 4 major plays - responsible for 21 points.

But for him and Dillon to not even get a mention for their performance is what is so sad to me. I mean I personally feel as if they both should have gotter Players of the week - especially since they had to reach back to LAST week for a defensive player of the week - and Dillon still had more tackles than the guy from Gram.

They didnt drop the ball. The SWAC office does this crap on purpose. These idiots never quit amazing me.

unlike basketball, football has no point system to determine the POW.

you get so many points in hoops for points, last second shot, etc. It's all judgement calls in football and their pleasing GSU now even though they were shut out.

BP, help me understand something.

Doesn't the SWAC office require each of the SIDs to nominate a POW when sending its reports to the SWAC office? Based on the nominees that are submited, the SWAC office then decides who gets POW.

If I am off base, correct me. But I thought I saw one of the SIDs filling out a form last year after one of the games I attended with his choice for POW.

I believe this correct.

as someone who nominated before...the SID's nominate the guys from their specific game and team only. For example, if GSU plays PV, Peter will nominate his guy from GSU and we'll nominate our guy. Once it leaves our hands it's up to the SWAC.

Like I said earlier, it's fair in basketball because there's a point system. Football is a little more biased and unsure as to what you got to do in baseball. I've nominated someone and they've won.

bottom line...expect odd calls each week.

I would have to assume that since there is a game wrap up written and submitted, they also had nominations for POW submitted - based on how you guys are saying the process goes. And again that being the case - aside from not being selected POW - these 2 young men did not even get 'other notable performance' mention.

And even if they didnt get nominated, once the game wrap up was submitted - having their stats highlighted - the SWAC staff should have been able to recognize their notable performance - plus there was SWAC personnel at the game, I saw them in the hotel afterwards....so it is not like they were oblivious to the play of Rowe and Dillon - they both got the game MVP.

...Pettway played an excellent game(as was the defensive effort until the 4th quarter and the interception was the offense fault) therefore it was fitting, IMHO, that he received this recognition!

...Now if you really want to be "nit-picky", you could look at the pre-season SWAC team and explain to me how could A&M's TE(Jacob Wilson, 7 games, 7 catches, 136 yds., 1TD) get the nod over Grambling's Gershone Jessie, 12 games, 20 catches, 335 yards, 6 TD's as the first team Tight-End????

...Sometimes these awards are not "fair" but they do the best they can do under the circumstances!

I remember sitting next to coach Stribling during the baseball championship game and he was doing this very same thing.

I remember this because he was joking with me about wheter or not he should vote for Ricky or his own player, so I would gather that they weren't limited to just their own players.

This was not even close. sad indeed!

I thought it was odd that a Grambling State student-athlete received honors on an off-week as well.

POW

The Quick answer to your question is ... Alabama State did not send in nominations for Player of the Week.

Nominations are due by 10a on Sunday ... ASU sent their's in on Monday.:bawling:

Dillon's performance was mentioned in the recaps, but IF a player is not nominated, we don't assume (azz outa you and me) the school wants the player nominated. He may have smacked the coach after the game or something.

Another thing ... should we make someone player of the week even if his nomination is not in  ... what do we say to the SIDs who submit their players on time even if they stay up late to get it done.  (last week, I actually had one report sent in at 5:47a on Sunday)

Just so you will know
The process goes like this ... We review the submissions and pull out the best performances ... We rank the performances by SWAC games, if they won, then the impact of the performance ... We go thru the same process for non-conference games (ranking them by division (D1-A, 1-AA, D-2, NAIA, D-3)

We try to recognize all notable performances by SWAC players. If someone does not make the POW, we try to list them as notables ... Grambling did not play this week, they played the week no one else did. The GSU nomination was "rolled over" to this week.

BOTTOM LINE
If they weren't nominated ... and we don't hear from the school (SID) ... they won't make the POW listing.

Call it unfair if you wish :bawling: but that's life on Sunday morning in the office.

Thanks for the 411, you need to post more often to clear things up. It will cut down on rumors and misinformation about your office. Btw, when will the website be improved?

yeah, I hear what you're saying about the SID having a deadline to submit the nominations, but seems like the people in the office, since they are "ranking" the performances, whether the player's team won, and that players impact on the game, should, in the very least, make an outstanding performance, at least noteworthy.

It looks downright bush league to not reward the OBVIOUS best performance, considering you knew about the performance.
Maybe I'm expecting the office to exercise some objective judgment.

I would bet anything that in any other conference in the free world a player who had the type of game that Rowe did ( 179 return yards, TD, blocked a FG that was returned for a TD, forced a fumble) would have been player of the week.
