SWAC players have NFL draft opportunity

When you think about some of the top NFL prospects from historically black colleges and universities, the SWAC has a bunch of players who could play on Sundays. These players could also hear their names called in the 2014 NFL draft to be held May 8-10.

A year ago, Terron Armstead, a terrific offensive tackle from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, was a third-round pick of the New Orleans Saints. Armstead has a great deal of potential and should have a solid NFL career.

Of course, when you talk about great players from the SWAC who made it to next level, the name Robert Mathis immediately comes to mind. Mathis was just a fifth-round pick coming out of Alabama A&M. Nevertheless, he is easily one of the best defensive players in the NFL. Mathis, a defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, leads the NFL in sacks with 11.5 this season. In 11 seasons, Mathis has been to five Pro Bowls and two Super Bowls.

There’s a good possibility that some of the following players could be drafted in the spring. If not, they could find their way onto an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent. The SWAC has some quality players on both sides of the ball.

no cox? I wouldn't have put pendleton in there...it would have been gooden or cox.

And you would be wrong. Pendleton is 6 3 is fast and can catch. Cox might catch a few eyes on pro day, but he is 5 10 and under and runs around a 4.5. Pros are looking for 6 2 CBs

No Crowell?

I think Crowell goes either late rounds or free agent but don't be surprised if he balls out in the NFL. He is an Arian Foster type cat. Great talent but background issues hurt stock. I would not be surprised at all if Crowell turns into a pro-bowler in two years.

idk... 1. He needs to get into shape. 2. He has had some injuries, is health a concern? 3. He is a beast, but how will he adjust to level talent? Everybody in the nfl was "good" in college and RB's in the league aren't used as much. They probably are picking seniors, and even though folks know he will leave this year, he is not a senior because that is crazy to leave his name off lol

Notice I said I wouldn't be surprised if in two years. I think that first year will be an adjustment and I hope he gets in shape. He got the same lawyer that Ray Lewis had so hopefully he will get connected to the right people.

It's clear Crowell takes plays off and is saving himself for the Combine and the draft. You can see it in his play....If he doesn't hit the homerun he calls to be taken out... He wants to say with his limited snaps he torched the SWAC...Kentucky couldn't F with that dude if he played more snaps...

He could have got at least 150 yds on UK. He'll probably get drafted between the 2-4 round. He needs to show out in the combine if he leaves this year

I doubt he's not in shape. That dude is just afraid to get hurt in SWAC games. He's just biding his time.
