SWAC PAGE WEEK #5

October is a big month in for SWAC football and if you do not win in October you can turn off the lights. UAPB beat Alcorn like I quoted in my page and the biggest upset of the week was TSU over Alabama A&M. Now lets talk some SWAC football.
1. Alabama State-Tavaris Jackson has another big day passing and running . This guy is amazing and NFL scouts are taking notice. You think Air McNair was good in the SWAC now we have another pro prospect for the upcoming 2006 draft. A-State is facing a tough test Sat. against JSU and my prediction ..... UPSET of the week JSU 31 Alabama State 28 :)

2. Grambling State-It seems like B. Eugene took care of busy in Dallas against P.V. Grambling's offense is clicking on all cylinders and now it is time for Ab-Juan(I hope I got it right) to get more involved in the offense. His ankle injury is improving but I am really impressed with GSU's young wide receivers again.
Its going to be tough in the Bluff against UAPB because their running game and passing game is looking good. UAPB beat GSU last year and the tigers are seeking revenge.
3. Jackson State University-The rest was much needed for the O-line but now comes the big game in Jackson,MS. Coach Bell will have his troops ready for this game and the key is to keep the clock running. Keep the ball out of T. Jackson's hand and JSU will win by a field goal. JSU's secondary and defense will be put to the test.

4. Southern-A big loss to A-State put a damper on the season but a win against Grambling in the BC will change that. SU's offense is clicking at the right time but the SWAC WESt race is slipping from your fingers.
5. Alabama A& M- Losing to TSU really hurt but the SWAC EAST race will be decided this week. The bulldogs are facing an uphill battle trying to catch A-State but I don't think it will happen this year. Can the bulldogs beat ASU this year????

6. Arkansas-Pine Bluff-UAPB got a much needed victory against the Braves but one things I can say is that the young Lions seem ready for the second half of the season. UAPB is still in the hunt for the SWAC WEST if you include the word "if" but remember last year.UAPB almost made it to the title
game.Tony Joseph New Mexico State tranfers had some good numbers on the ground. Will GSU be ready or will UAPB dethrone GSU again this year???

7. Alcorn State-Playing for pride is all the Braves have left in the tank but now Coach Thomas job is hanging on a thread. Alcorn will be looking for a new coach at the end of the season. The Alcorn Alumni are "saying what have you done lately Coach Thomas". :argue:
8.Mississippi Valley- Looking down the barrel of a devil's gun and what do I see dead smoke. Valley is playing for pride for the rest of the season. A. Nelson is good QB and a NFL prospect but besides that Valley will be back next year. Can Valley win two more games???? :teleport:

9. Texas Southern-Now the streak has been broken and the tigers are looking for more wins this season. Upcoming SWAC teams have taken notice to their win but TSU will win more games this season and mark my word. TSU vs. UAPB win be thriller in Houston. Will TSU win 3 more games????

10.Praire View- Destroyed in the Cotton Bowl but PV seem to run out of gas and PV need to hit the recruiting trail for Linebackers and defensive backs. The SWAC is a passing conference and if you can't stop the pass you will fail every time. PV will be back and mark your calender when PV play UAPB. This will be a good game to watch???? :licky:

Man there are so many things wrong with this. For example: Alcorn hasn't beaten anybody but Langston and they're ranked #7 over Valley?

The arrangements of SWAC Page #5 are not in order but these are my comments only. So Alcorn is not #7 I just comment on the teams as I go then enter them in computer.

Southeastern will be an interesting game. I was at the game against Tulane and they should have won that game. Their defense is waaaay better than last year and their QB is a white SWAC-style QB--very mobile and can scramble to make time.

I still think their secondary is their weak point on D, but their front seven is pretty decent (I guess you can blame it on the scheme change). They look helluva lot faster than last year.

Their RBs are all banged up at this point, but it'll be good to see Grambling refugee Felton Huggins and Tyrone Timmons light it up.

This season it seems anyone can pull off an upset at any time (except for PV, Sorry PV fans). But I think parody has officially hit the SWAC. The days of seeing only Grambling, Southern, Alabama State, and Alabama A&M in the championship game will soon come to an end. Texas Southern looks better. Jackson State has talent. Valley is getting better. UAPB has taken a step back this year but is progressing as a program. So I can't say any game expect for PV is a sure win. (And even PV has a chance against Alcorn this season.) I believe parody is here to stay, for a while.

U r correcto Mr. Tiger. The thing that MOST of us dreaded was going back-to-back against SU after a loss and then GSU after a loss. Now? Alcorn @ homecoming coming off of a loss. :retard:

I would imagine that MOST teams would get a sense of urgency about themselves and want to rebound quickly and effectively after a loss or thrashing. Losing to PV after situations like that would certainly not be a good thing.

Our backs are up against the wall and we need some type of pass defense. lol This isn't a running conference.

Now..i agree that parity has hit an all-time high in the SWAC...but that parity is all for not with this damned 9-game mandate...It hurts our competitiveness a lot when all the SWAC teams do is beat each other. It's good to get out there, play other schools and maybe pick up on some things they've done and implement it in your game plans..

I guess i'm saying parity amongst the conference doesn't mean squat if we are not allowed to play often outside. Sort've like being kids of that overprotective mom..

But at this set up...LHSAA's District 8-3A could be the SWAC, with everybody playing everybody...

I agree with Journalist. I was just talking about that with a couple of other GSU alums the other day. It would be more interesting if we could cut down on the number of SWAC games and one person even suggested West only playing West and East with East and then get a chance to play someone in the SCG that you haven't played all season. Of course that would cut out some of the bigger games in the season that some of us look forward too like GSU-Jackson and SU-Jackson especially. I think as far as Louisiana was concerned it would be great if we played more of the in-state schools. I was told by someone in Athletics that at one time playing all the schools in the LA system was proposed but it never panned out.

I joked with my colleagues and said...imagine if you get the Louisiana I-AA schools and Mississippi I-AA schools and put them in a conference...

SU, Grambling, Alcorn, Jackson and Valley....Northwestern St., Mcneese, Nicholls, Southeastern...

that has the makings of a good D-1AA football league.. ..but even simpler, that's a good, solid 8 out of 11 games scheduled right there without all of those travel costs..plus it's good competition.

I wished we had a strong 7-game schedule...so we could get more Southland and SoCo and MEAC teams on our schedules....

it's practically unfair to have Bama State, SU, Grambling and others to be handcuffed by the mandate because (insert school here) can't draw people. The mandate is simply attendance welfare and makes the SCG remedial and redundant and also works against us in recruiting...

Man, i can hear it now coaches tellin kids...you don't wanna play at (insert school here)...all they do is play against the other schools int he conference..you'll never know how good you are...

The only way we'll acheive true parity (last seen in the mid- to late 90s) is if our teams are competitve in and out of the conference.....

YOU aint never lied, and make a hellva lot of money too. JSU, ACST, GSU and SU, are the revenue producers in the SWAC, probabaly close to 80% percent
combine, we get less than 40% back. A straight drag on the teams, all 10. :nod2:

The 9-game mandate drives me nuts. Not only does it limit your ability to schedule Division I-AA schools outside the SWAC, it also limits your chance to schedule a D-I schools for a quick payday. But one thing parity might do is boost the attendance for some SWAC games. Maybe more fans will travel to games if they believe their school has a chance to win.

It does boost the attendance for some of the games but I think that if we started to play other schools more attendance would still be great for most schools. When Gram played McNeese the stadium was packed.

This is what gets me about the 9 game mandate. Many schools don't like the 9 game mandate, but when not forced to play 9 SWAC schools, the first thing SWAC schools go out and do is SCHEDULE the very SWAC schools that they don't have to play. WTF?

In the SEC, do they ever schedule another SEC school that is not treated as a SEC conference game? I think Arkansas/South Carolina will play each other each year, but Arkansas has never scheduled Florida unless it was an SEC conference game.

If the conference goes with 7 conference games, then it should MANDATE that schools schedule the remaining games against non-SWAC opponents. That would mean everybody in the East can't be knocking down GSU and SU door for a game. Every team in the West can't be knocking down JSU, ASU or even Alcorn for a game.

Well, c**nery was the reason the 7-game conference slate didn't work. I was in undergrad and did not agree with playing J-State unless it was a conference game. Although I enjoy the rivalry, playing just for the sake of playing and getting a good gate minimizes it for me...Rivalry game with two conference schools SHOULD HAVE conference implications...

If the SWAC had a mandated 7-game slate...with games rotating off between divisions every 2 to 3 years...it'll make the SCG more exciting..Plus it'll increase chances for pay days with Division I-A schools or get lucrative classics with MEAC schools or big intersetional games with the SoCo, Southland, Gateway or Ohio Valley (No- the Southern Heritage Classic and John Merritt classic don't count because Tenn St. isn't viewed as a new rival to most of our members).

So what does bringing in the most arses in our stadiums every year mean if they don't get the absolute best we can put before them

Imagine if GSU or SU did not play J-State or Bama State in the regular season...and they win their respective divisions....that would be part of the draw...
or in the case of a rematch...it'll give it that grudge match feeling like SCG 1999 and SCG 2004.
