SWAC Home Field Attendance

Through games played on September 29th.

Here's the "home field" attendance by SWAC university in games played so far. Since this is "home field" attendance, I am not including the attendance from certain classic games, such as Bama State's Gulf Coast Classic in Mobile, or Grambling vs Prairie View in the State Fair Classic, as well as others.

I thought that it would be interesting just to see how teams are doing in attendance on their own campuses or home fields.

If there are any errors, feel free to make them known.

ALABAMA A&M
vs Texas Southern - 5,470
vs Jackson State - 8,759

ALABAMA STATE
vs Alcorn - 13,487
vs JCSU - 7,821

ALCORN
vs Grambling - 17,500

ARKANSAS PINE BULFF
vs Miss. Valley - 11,346

GRAMBLING
vs Alabama A&M - 7,432

JACKSON STATE
no games played in Jackson thru Sep. 29th

MISS. VALLEY
vs Jackson St. - 10,155

PRAIRIE VIEW
vs Tex. A&M Kingsville - 4,098

SOUTHERN
vs Arkansas P.B. - 14,051
vs Northwestern St. - 16,800

TEXAS SOUTHERN
vs Prarie View - 25,044

This isn't the SMACK board, and I don't mean to smack, but I do have a few comments.

First of all, I'm rather surprised at how low the A&M vs Jackson St. attendance was. These two teams were picked pre-season #1 and #2 in the East, and they can't draw 9,000? I expected no less than 20,000 for that one.

Great showing by Texas Southern vs Prairie View! Alcorn vs Grambling had a good attendance, and Bama State vs Alcorn was respectable. Bama State vs JCSU could have been better, but it was about what was expected.

Southern averaged about 15,000 in two games, which is good, but could have been better. Pine Bluff also drew a respectable crowd in its game against Valley.

IMO...........

The poor showing in the first couple of games really spelled our doom as far as attendance goes.

You put out a better product, people will come see it.

We have offensive woes......
Injuries.......
We're unable to go undefeated like JSU, cause weaintonjsulevel......

Folks can find other ways to entertain themselves.

You want to talk attendance!

Games to come,

Jackson State v the "U"
60,000 + in jackson

Jackson State v Gram
both undefeated teams
40,000 + in jackson

Jackson State v TSU
Southern Heritage Classic
50,000+ in Memphis

Jackson State v Grambling
SWAC Championship game
in B-Ham
40,000

who draws the crowd?

Whoever does AAMU's attendence has been ucking it up for the longest. Aint NO WAY IN HELL you can tell me their were just 8,000 people at the JSU. Now at the beginning of the game it looked like that but when I walked on AAMU side for halftime it was OBVIOUS there was wayyyy more than that . And I am not even mentioining the people that were in the concession area because it was cold. There had to be 12000-13000 at the least. Do they go by how many people were in the game at kickoff?

This topic was posted on the SMACK Board in error.

The purpose of the post is not to debate which games traditionally draw the biggest crowds, we all know what they are.

The goal here was a discussion of the attendance of games played "on campus" or on "home fields" through Sep. 29th.

I agree with you Dahill,

The AAMU vs JSU was much larger than that.
I'll say there were about 9,000 people on the AAMU side alone and we had atleast 4,000 fans.

Yeah, Alcorn State did good. Now, this next game against Samford University will be nothing. It will probably be about 3-5,000 people there. The following week (10/20) is homecoming, and that game will be standing room only.

I'm shocked at this Prairie View vs. Texas Southern. It seems as if the entire black population in Texas should pack out the stadium that they play in.

The other attendances are not surprising.

THE GSU VS. ALCORN ATTENDENCE IS INCORRECT IT WAS ABOUT 14,500 BUT STILL GOOD. AND IT WAS MORE PEOPLE AT THE AAMU VS GSU GAME.

Observation

S.U. first two home games were played in the rain and still maintained a 15k average in these games. The Jags turned out for the Tulane game unfortunately we were not the host (although we split the gate).

Look for S.U. to host Tulane and Jackson St in 2002 in the dome and easily win the attendance for 1-AA.

Look for JSU to win it (attendance record) this year with S.U. and an undefeated Gram ball club in Jackson these two games should have an average of 50k providing the elements (weather) facilitate.

Look for the BC to eclipse 72K if S.U. and Gram goes into that game undefeated in conference play.

Look for the SHC to eclipse 60K if JSU and TNST continue winning. This game has the potentional of looming large in terms of rankings and playoff implications.

JROCK, I agree with you..

Of course no matter when JSU schedules Homecoming. a drop of rain appears..but I will not begin to ? that one.

If it rains I still see(with the rain 25K) if all sunshine then who knows could be close to 40k or more. It is the first home game and we are playing a team that defeated us last year(took 10 years though) lol. ASU fans dont travel to MS winning or losing for some reason. Maybe they will this year, it would have help if they were undefeated too..

SU coming to town..an easy 60K
GRAM-40k
UAPB-30K..and its high school day
Alcorn 50K..

These are just ifs and I believe there will be more for these games but just incase weather plays into the attendance, JSU should walk away with home avg attendance anywhere from 30-45k a game. It will be nice if we can shatter out own record from 95 and 97.
(1997, averaging 38,873 spectators per game. The previous record (34,849) was set by the Tigers in 1995.

This year it is all possible with the month of October proving to be a huge month that will make or break the Tigers...
JSU has never had an undefeated season.... They have always lost at least one game.....just a thought..

The JSU/Tennessee State game will be played on Thanksgiving Day. This might impact the attendance. I hope not. I'm planning on traveling from DC to Nashville and my family and I are going to make our way down to Memphis for the game. We'll just do our turkey and JSU kittycakes the day after...:D

Seriously, I hope that the change up in dates and it being a holiday want impact the attendance too much. But I suspect that it will.

GO BIG BLUE!!!!

TS TS TS TS U!!! TENNESSEE - TENNESSEE STATE!!!!

I kinda think there will be a VERY large crowd at the CCC this year. The reason being is that alot of people had to stay in their hotels last year due to the weather, and alot of people didn't make the drive. So, if we don't run into that problem again this year, it will be at least 60,000 there.

Nuetral Site Classics

In a meeting we attended with the promoter of the Peach State Classic, he said that the neutral site classics are factored into attendance. In that case add 40-50k for JSU. If this comes off the way he plans it will be big!!

I too, was concerned about the A&M/JSU numbers but now hearing from people on both sides, I feel better that that just isn't right. Perhaps those were pre-game tickets sold and did not include walk ups. I hear ya phatback, you're right about that.

Actually Bama State I thought that with the support "Cole Blooded" Football was garnering you could get 10k for every game even J. C. Smith. How much is your estimate for Clark? 3K?

Bengal E,

Getting 7,821 people to come out to see you play Johnson C. Smith after you have lost your first two games isn't bad.

Think about it. Alabama A&M coming in 1 and 0 in the SWAC (GSU game did not count as SWAC game for A&M) versus an undefeated Jackson St., team DREW ONLY 938 MORE PEOPLE for their game than a then winless Alabama State team vs Johnson C. Smith! Personally, I find that to be amazing.

Also, I'm not going to jump on the "they undercounted our attencedance" bandwagon, but that is a possibility.

As for our future home game attendance, Clark AU will likely be our smallest game, but I still expect anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 for that game. Montgomery is only about two hours from Atlanta, and we have a lot of alumni there that are associated with Clark AU. Clark's band director is a Bama State graduate and will be bringing his band to take on the Mighty Marching Hornets.

Bama State will likely finish the season at number two or three in attendance in the SWAC.

JSU has never had an undefeated season....

Actually, we have gone undefeated in the regular season before. What we haven't done is go undefeated and untied. As recently as '87 (or '88), we went 8-0-2.

Deuce,

I went to the Bama State vs. JC Smith game. They could have easily made 10,000 if all the people in the parking lot and tail gating attended. Alot of them had no intest in the game, just locals haning out. Also heard shots from the parking lot during the game. I guess they will eventually stop us from tail gating.

Well, I read the attendance was approximately 17,500.

I WAS AT THE GAME AND I KNOW HOW THE 17,500 FIGURE CAME UP. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH A GATE COUNT. YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE ME IF I TOLD YOU.
