SWAC coaches on the bubble

Now SOGGY, show me a thread that keeps strictly to the topic.

Good point, but I was trying to address "Mr. Know-it-all" since he had all of the "wrong" answers.

BEING THAT SPEARS IS A DR. KLAUSEN HIRE HE HAS ALL 5yrs TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. LOOK AT IT THIS WAY, IF SPEARS WINS THE SWAC AND PUTS CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMs ON THE FIELD THAT MAKE KLAUSEN AND DOUG LOOK LIKE THEY CHOSE THE RIGHT GUY, BUT IF SPEARS FALLS FLAT ON HIS FACE KLAUSEN STILL COMES OUT SMELLING LIKE ROSES BECAUSE HER BUDDIES AT LA.TECH, ULL, ULM & N. WESTERN ST. GET MORE RECRUITS AND BETTER THEIR PROGRAMS.

I do not agree with all that you say, and maybe I should not have eluded to him getting fired. Try this "Spears will acquire BELL status with one more losing season." Hearing myself think that I am somewhat inclined to him leaving. I think the Gram faithfull would do any and everything to get him out.
You know I guess I am buying into their hype about the ICON.

Spears has not had a losing season.

I don't agree with the Clausen Conspiracy Theory... Not even the part about her having a direct say in the hiring. It was Judson's decision based on a strong recommendation from Jeffries. I trust Jeffries, a sharp football guy, to make a good coaching hire decision.

Spears has proven that he can make good use of the Grambling name to recruit...now it's time to see how effectively he runs the program. Last year was tough but he showed his smarts by doing and saying the right things in terms of helping him get the job...and a 5 year deal. Obviously the man is no dummy and (in my opinion) will have a successful stint as Grambling Coach. Once he wins several championships, MAYBE some of the naysayers within and outside the Grambling family will calm down. But he better come out smoking this year...cuz a lot of folk are wanting a letdown.

Agree with the above (you do know though that I will talk about him in the fall regardless. )

Hollygrove,

I do support Coach Spears. However, you are right on the head with the Klausen Theory.

6-5 I should have remembered that. I was at most of the games. I hate to say this since you guys seem so big-headed lately.
What I mean about Spears maybe having trouble is this:
I hold GSU in high esteem. You guys are the fore-runner in popular black football. So I am simply saying this. Where as my alma matar will hold on to a loser for years and let him kill the program, I can not see GSU doing that. I think something would have to give if Spears shows any indication of not rising to the established GSU tradition.

This is in no way refextive of coach Spears. I met him briefly and like the guy. I hope he wins 10 games each season.

There will be several coaching changes in swac conference after the season is over. Melvin Spears has done wonderful job this season and have one of the best quarterbacks in nation in Bruce Eugene. However, people in Grambling, La, still want someone inside the family to have head coaching job in first place. Since Spears is an alummuns of Alcorn State and played for legendary Marion Casem. He could possibly leave Grambling and replace Johnny Thomas as next head football coach at Alcorn State.. If Spears leave the Icon, the next head football coach at Grambling is going to be no other than Sammy White or Lee Fobbs..

There is going to be coaching change at end of season at Jackson State. Tigernation has been same since the passing of Carson. Jackson State Football need to hire coach that bring new attitude and edge back to the program. My opinion is the next head football coach at JSU will probably be Jon Mckenzie, Kent Schoolfield, Bill Hayes or Fred Jackson..

This will NOT happen. Grambling will not fire Spears and there is no chance that Johnny Thomas will be fired at Alcorn. Alcorn's president likes Thomas so he will be around for a long time. The only coach that is sure to be fired is James Bell. I expect McKenzie, Fred Jackson, Harold Jackson, and possibly L.C. Cole to surface as candidates for the post.

Why on GOD's green earth do you think that Spears would leave Gram for da'Corn. That has to be the craziest post that I seen on this site for a long time.

Clueless about GSU. That is all. Carry on.

Even though Spears is an Alcorn alum, I don't see him returning unless Grambling pisses him off some how. Which is possible. All our schools are capable of making a coach want to leave. So it aint impossible that Spears would go to Alcorn. That is still his ALMA MATER. Now like I said, it is unlikely for 2 reasons. GSU is a higher profile and paying position than Alcorn. And like someone said. ASU president is not going to fire Dr. Thomas no matter what. So that being said, the only coach this year that is on the bubble in the SWAC is James Bell. Anthony Jones would have been if he had of lost some more games and he still might if messes around and gets blown out by Bama State and loses to Bell. Which isn't likely. He was feeling some heat earlier though after that HC loss. So Bell is the only one really on the hot seat and that depends on who you ask at JSU. Totten is winning and will have a winning season this year and he got his buddy Rice in his corner. PV, TxSU, UAPB all have 2nd year coaches. Pete and Spears have new contracts. Coe is coming off back to back SCGs so he is safe. Heck all these coaches may return next year.

Oh you can best believe Totten was feeling that heat. The President had already had his walking papers ready. He got too much talent on that team for them not to have a winning record.

When we are above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 98-99, why would get rid of him? Sure a couple of the games have slipped thru their fingers this year (Grambling... JS-Who?), but looking at the remaining schedule... 6-7 wins is likely... which compared to the past 5-6 years, would be great.

But I cant lie... if he would have finished 3-8 again this year... no doubt about it he would be feeling that heat :lmao:

Valley really didn't have a chance against Grambling. Valley simply played above their heads.
