SWAC Championship Game Attendance

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

Airfare, hotel for 5-nights, rental car, work leave, etc. It can be a costly trip but I enjoyed the week in Houston.

Oh yeah bruh you gave up some change I see. Whats your thoughts on the tourney??

Houston is damn sure better than Birmingham and Garland.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

The only problem which some of you mentioned was the $30-$40 ticket prices. When you think about it, those prices are football prices as well. As a matter of fact, how much was the SCG football game? I wonder how many more people would have shown up if those tickets averaged $17-$25. It's just a thought and how can those amounts hurt if another 3,000-5,000 fans show up. Another thing, if I pay $30-$40, then I may not buy a souvenir or a beer. That's a hypothetical situation, because I may buy it all, but in reality those higher prices have its good and not so good points. Now, I would say this, that if any of the states with HCBU's had four teams from the same state playing in the championship games, then I'm sure we can agree that they all would have had better attendance. Only difference is possibly the $30-$40 that would have scared the death out of some fans.

I wasn't TOO offput with the $30 - $40 ticket price when you think about the fact that you get two games for that price. But the casual fan who wants to see a certain team play, and they have the second game in a session, will think the price is steep for what amounts to one game. What DID throw me off was when I looked up the prices and saw that the opening day sessions were $15, the next two days' sessions were $30, and the finals session was $40. I get it though. All in all, nice job by Houston. Houston ended up with the perfect storm for championships in its first year (SU/JSU, then double PV/TSU finals). Hope they can build on both for next year.

I agree. The question though is will these numbers hold (or come close) when we don't have "the perfect storm".

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

it depends on yall fans...you had at least a half perfect storm on multiple occasions in Bham and it was sparsley attended...as long as TSU, PV, SU, JSU, GSU try to compete and get pasdt the 1st round, you'll be arlright

that's BS. The all Alabama finals were well attended. Especially, the first one. The other one had a good crowd too. Especially for a Sunday morning. (even though ASU folks had tuned Spivery ball out)

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

I may be wrong, but weren't the ticket prices in Garland around the same price for the championship game? I don't remember what I paid in Shreveport, but Garland was about the same price I think. Not really a bad ticket price for two championship basketball games and a concert. That marketing company that the SWAC hired may want to do some polling this offseason to see if the price really was an issue for those that chose to stay at home. The member schools alumni relations offices could help with that.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

Now that the eastern schools are complaining, move it to New Orleans (centralized) where the Pelicans play and call it a day.

Nope. I paid 20

The problem with that is the hotels will hoard the prices like they do for the BC, you didn't see that with the Houston Hotels.

To me, 10 teams hurt. Those 10a games. Nobody show up for the morning session.

This may always be a constant for New Orleans....

Houston has way too many lodging options.... So it works out well....

Houston has an abundance of hotels but it's so far west for the Mississippi/Alabama schools.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

Lets just leave it in one spot and let it grow.... We should sign a 5 year contract with Houston right now. People say the arena is too big.... but I can see from twitter that players LOVE playing in an NBA arena.... AAMU basketball team loved it in Houston and playing at Toyota Center.

That's for any big event in N.O., but the BC hotels aren't as high as the Essence and Mardi Gras hotels.

That's what matters most.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

97.9 had promotionsfor a month leading up to the tournament. I don't think I heard anything on 93.7, though.

Yeah, there were tons of commercials on 102.1 (The adult R&B station :)) also...Radio advertising was defintely not a problem for this tournament.

It ain't that bad for the SIP folks. Only folks it is bad for is AAMU and Bama State. It is a long way for them.

97.5 the ESPN Houston station was pumping it up too.

Good deal. I agree DaHill. It is a big arena. But the players enjoyed the opportunity to play in a NBA arena.
