SWAC Championship Game Attendance

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

Not everyone has a smartphone. The guy that normally sits near me at basketball games does not even have a cell phone or email and a lot of the older folk have flip phones.

The SWAC office and the ad company should do a better job getting out info.

In this day and age they have to incorporate internet (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) promo and not just OTA radio. Internet based stations have grown a lot over the past 2-3 years so they definitely need to use that avenue more.

This is the first year and most have said that it was a success so I will give it time and see what they can do to improve it.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

This year they contracted that out to the same company that does promotions for the CIAA Tournament. I think they did a good job covering media outlets but the content of the ads is what I take issue with.

as soon as the semifinals were announced, have the potential championship ads ready to drop that night...

secondly, reduced ticket prices in the finale will help as you may not get a local matchup every year..imagine if it was AAMU and Alcorn in the finals...

outside of that, not much to complain about as it was well-ran

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

IMO for the swac to maximize profits and overall seeding in the NCAAs, they need to shrink down the tournament to 6 teams, 2 bye's, and play home and home games. SWAC almost had a 12 win 22 loss team represent the conference (PV). Their RPI is too low as a conference to allow all 10 teams to participate in the conference tournament. For them to grow on the national stage they have to make better ensurance that their best team (over the entire season) represents their conference and not the hottest team in the last 2 weeks of the season. Allowing every team totally de-values the regular season. 8000 people at the championship is nice, but how many acutally paid? LOL, we all know how the SWAC do it. I'm just sayin.

Hell, they could start with this website. My website traffic represents the very footprint of the conference and then some. I get more visits from the Houston area than anywhere. In fact, my top 10 cities include Houston, Jackson, Baton Rouge, Atlanta, Huntsville, Chicago, Montgomery and Dallas.

There are countless reports that indicate that Internet advertising gets better results than traditional methods (radio, TV and Billboard). It is cheaper and much more effective.

I had a great time. No complaints from me.

I noticed while at the game that the SWAC Championship had a better turnout than the Southland Conference Championship.

What's sad is that the Southland plays their conference championship in a HIGH SCHOOL facility. :smh:

I noticed that as well....

Let us had done that though. We'd been called Small Time and need to move down to D2 (by people on this board and our own alums)

It's a nice arena don't get me wrong but for a NCAA Division I conference it is unacceptable. They've been holding the conference tournament there at least 5-6 years now.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

Probably more cost effective considering their attendance and they probably don't have to pay much. Even though Toyota Center is an awesome venue it's still too big for our attendance. TSU would be perfect for the SWAC tourney.

Kenn, does the SWAC have to comply with FOI requests? I am curious to know how much was paid for TC compared to th last few years. And the difference in profits year over year.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

I can tell you this....I had attended the SWAC Tournament for three years in Birmingham, Bossier City (which I think could have worked) and Garland (twice) and none of those tournaments were attended as well as this one from what I saw. Things were done here that I do not think were done in Bossier City and Garland. I was always disappointed with the turnout in Birmingham.....even for the championship games.

That facility is much better than a lot of our places.

Why is it unacceptable for the mid major conferences?

That place is not bad.

Man, you must have been listening in on a conversation I had with Jafus and a few others at the tournament on Friday discussing that very issue. I was told yes, but to be honest, I'm not sure.

One other thing I notice is that the drapes did a great job of covering the entire top level. If you didn't know any better one would thing the Toyota Center didn't have a upper level. Granted, there were still plenty of seats on the ends, but the drapes helped a lot in making an intimate setting.

#1 The Southland is not a mid major conference.

Because it is a HIGH SCHOOL facility.

Notice, I Said It Is A Nice Facility But That Still Does Not supercede that it is a facility built for high schools.

Not sure about the basketball tourney but I was told by a member of the SWAC athletic council that the football championship in Houston made money the first time ever.

What more do SWAC fans want?

There are other one-bid leagues holding conference tournaments at member institutions.
The West Coast Conference has held their conference tournament in a casino arena in Las Vegas.

Hey, the Toyota Center was a huge risk. But the SWAC rolled the dice and came out a little better than in previous years.
Sometimes with us SWAC fans, it's damned if you do ... damned if you don't...

Also, you might be able to FOIA the SWAC since it's made up of state institutions, and some of those institutions use public money for athletics. That's just a theory.

Re: SWAC Championship Game Attendance.

I think the mission of the SWAC office is two-fold: 1) Branding and exposure and 2) Making a profit. I think #1 was accomplished in both the football championship and basketball championship. When you are trying to grow your product the perfect scenario happened in the first-year of this 3-year agreement- SU vs. JSU in football and TSU vs. PV in basketball. I think the 8K plus that showed up was a good number and thought attendance would have been higher. However, not making excuses but I think these are valid points that affected the possibility of a larger crowd: 1) Although we live in the age of technology, there was less than 24hrs of notice of the team teams in the finals; 2) $40 is pretty steep for the average fan and true fan that can think of a million things to do with that money; and 3) heavy rains. Now, I will say this if you paid $40 and attended both games and the post-game concert then one could argue it was reasonably priced. On another note, I must give kudos to the local media both print and tv as they gave great coverage of TSU's basketball win. In fact one local station had the win as the lead-in top story of the news and then talked about it again during the sports segment. The Houston Chronicle featured the team on the front page of the sports section today (Monday) and Saturday. Someone mentioned free tickets-that is true that happened but someone picked-up the tab for them.

In conclusion, I think the tourney was a succes just on PR and exposure alone and those are not hard dollars but provides name recognition that money can't buy. It was good for the SWAC and provided a huge boost for TSU not just on the local level but national level as well.
