SWAC Can Blame BCS For Playoff Woes

All eyes will be focusing on Norman Oklahoma Saturday night when the Big 12 game of the century will take place between the No. 2 Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Oklahoma Sooners. Some $15 million and a national championship dream will be on the line.

Two weeks later the Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide will battle for that same $15 million and a national title at the SEC Championship Game.

Even the longstanding clash between Ohio State and eight-loss Michigan will have mega bucks hanging in the balance. A win by the Buckeyes could land them in Arizona at the Fiesta Bowl.

College football can't get any better, right?

Not if you are a president of a SWAC FCS football team when there are no multimillion-dollar bowl games in your future.

A league that has produced Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Jackie Slater, Doug Williams and coaching great Eddie Robinson has chosen not to participate in the FCS this year.

In fact, the conference has not participated in postseason play since 1999.

Instead, the SWAC has put all of its eggs in a conference title game in hopes of making a little extra cash and avoid a beat down by Top 25 FCS powerhouses.

Jackson State's 1997 team was the last SWAC school to make a playoff appearance.

Prior to having its own championship game, the SWAC have been winless in 19 trips to the playoffs.

It is no secret the FCS playoffs are not a big money maker. The NCAA does pay expenses for playoff participants to cover a specified number of people --100 per team for the first three rounds of the playoffs, 115 per team for the championship game. Hosting a playoff game, however, is costly.

Host teams must pay the NCAA a guarantee. In case there's any shortfall, schools have to dip into their athletic budgets to make up the difference.

Not good when most SWAC athletic budgets are miniscule compared to even three-time FCS national champion Applachian State.

Southern University, which has dominated the conference in recent years, has been a frequent no-show in the playoffs because it never changed the date of its financially-lucrative Bayou Classic match-up against Grambling State University.

Fair enough, right? With the way the economy is, why would any entity want to lose money?

However, that also means no national championship dreams for its ten member schools.

Maybe it would have been different if NCAA President Miles Brand stood up to those greedy FBS college presidents.

Maybe if the NCAA allowed a playoff instead of a BCS title game decided by votes and computers there would be no need to take more than 75 percent of gate from FCS teams that host postseason games.

Remember, the NCAA does not make one dime off FBS bowl games.

Maybe Jackson State or Southern or Grambling would be more welcoming to participating in the FCS playoffs instead of playing in the SWAC title game.

Maybe one day, but not when ESPN signed a multimillon-dollar deal to broadcast BCS games starting in 2010.

Maybe it is a good thing the SWAC is not testing the playoff waters. Maybe the SWAC is ahead of the game and we don't even know it.

The only - I repeat - the only reason that the SWAC is not participating in the FCS playoffs is the refusal of moving the Bayou Classic. In most years the FCS playoffs have started by the time it is held. It is big money for SU and GSU, so they are holding out on it. It is true that the cost of participating in the FCS playoffs can be prohibitive. So, the SWAC came up with the SCG to give the other teams in the SWAC the CHANCE to make some extra money. That would have been fine if the SCG had lots of corporate sponsors and a nice TV contract; but, those have not materialized.

Also keep in mind The Turkey Day Classic has an impact. Please note that UAPB & Texas Southern is now playing that week end. Hence, half of the conference teams now have games Thanksgiving week.......

Here is the real playoff history. The SWAC received an automatic bid to the playoffs until 1986 when it was stripped of the bid because of an insufficient number of teams eligible for the playoffs. Alabama State, Southern and Grambling refused to move their games costing the SWAC its automatic bid.
Published on April 28, 1986, The Baton Rouge Advocate printed a story about it. The AP also followed up. The links at the bottom of this page will prove it.
I hope this puts to rest the automatic bid debate. We had one and we lost it and we all should know why now.

Thanks JRock for letting these folks know. They forget about Bama State. Now this Lone Star Classic with PB and TxSU is going to be played as well.

So tell me again why JSU and Alcorn moved our date of the CCC to satisify the idiot leadership of the SWAC?:noidea:
Somebody answer that please.:retard:

Hell.
We may as well say fugg what the SWAC want and schedule our games to maximize profit's.

Everybody else is.:shame:

Frat, when yall moved that game it was because the NCAA would still give an at large bid to a team from the SWAC. The SWAC didn't have an automatic bid, but 1-AA would allow a SWAC team outside of Gram, SU, and Bama State to participate if you got selected at large. We even had folks going during that Heritage Bowl era like McNair and company. In 84 we had Valley and Alcorn go the playoffs. So basically you guys moved it on your own. Not because the SWAC told you too. Which I understand why you guys would do it. You wanted to keep going to the playoffs. No way the SWAC could tell JSU and ALcorn to move the Soul Bowl and not tell SU and Gram or Bama State to move their games. Now if the SWAC had wanted an automatic bid then they would have had to do that. But you know no one in the SWAC office would have told Coach Rob that back then.

I don't think the SWAC office is stopping JSU and Alcorn from moving the game back to Thanksgiving week. Didn't sound like UAPB and TxSU asked for permission to play this Lone Star Classic. The SWAC don't want the playoffs. Only some fans and alums of our schools want the playoffs. Maybe a few coaches and ADs. But the SWAC seems to be fine not participating from the way they are conducting business. Not saying it is right. But they aint holding no one hostage on when to play your games except for these 7 game or soon to be back at 9 game mandates.

I understand that but people was thinking at the time that all SWAC team's would eventually move their games also in the future.
That didn't and will not happen.:smh:

So again.
TELL ME WHY IS JSU STILL GOING ALONG WITH THE SWAC BY KEEPING OUR GAME SLATED FOR THE WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING.
We all know that ya'll are NOT going to move the B.C., Bamma State and Tuskeege are NOT going to move the Turkey day Classic, and now UAPB and Texas Southern are scheduling their game for the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Why are we even listening to the SWAC office when other school's could care less about the conference as a whole and are only looking out for their best interest?

The NCAA is never going to give another playoff bid to a SWAC team.
Times have changed.
You could schedule Appy State, Georgia Southern, and Montana state, beat them all, go undefeated in the SWAC and still won't get a bid because we are locked into the SCG.
A school would probably be ranked #1 in FCS and still won't get a bid. :lmao:

And with half the conference not eligible for the playoff's because of games after thanksgiving, the NCAA is not going to even bother looking at this conference with all the teams they got to chose from in FCS so ya'll can stop all this "wishing" for at large bids.
IT AIN'T HAPPENING.

Oh well.
I'm just venting cause I know every excuse in the book for not moving a game is about to be thrown at me.

Actually SU and Gram did move the BC one year. It was either my JR or Sr year. I need to go find out which one it was. I think they would give a team an at large bid. The problem is that JSU has not been the same JSU it used to be. Remember in 90s. SU rose all the way to the top 5 in the poll and JSU was in the top 10-15. Our football has fallen off is why we can't get an at large bid. The SCG is causing us not to be looked at now for sure. But before the SCG we had no issues getting an at large if they won 9 or 10 games. But no SWAC schools were doing that consistently but JSU when you take Gram and SU out the picture, or when there was no McNair at Alcorn. Even if the BC was this week. No one from our conference would get an invite. None of us are ranked liked we used to be. Usually you needed to be in the top 16 to have a chance if you didn't have an auto bid from your conference.

Don't forget we played University of Houston on Thanksgiving Saturday as well in 2007.

So with that, the playoff's and the SWAC is a moot point.
We ain't getting no at large bid's so no need to discuss it any further.:noidea:

Every school need to look out for themselves and themselves only.
The only thing the "SWAC conference" is good for is to give us guranteed games to play each fall against each other.:)

That all the SWAC is good for under the present circumstances.
They damm sure not doing anything else to advance the conference in football.

Players, why do you always do this to yourself? Your own school ain't worried about the playoffs, but you want to try to guilt the rest of us into caring?

The NCAA made this a no win situation for the SWAC ... remember, JSU used to go and saddled the conference with the record it has now. And you wonder why we haven't been looked at for at-large bids since? Then, someone tries to give us another option and we (including me) gave every reason why it won't work instead of working to make sure it did work.

And now, we are where we are. Little money, bad football, and little hope for change ... unless we get off our asses and do soemthing about our own schools finances.

Until then, anyone who bring this up OR continues to talk about it is wasting badnwidth and time.

WGAS.

That's what I'm saying and I also said that every excuse in the book would be thrown my way.
Just venting.

Just admint that this is a conference where school's don't GAF about nobody but themselves in the end.

I have accepted it, why can't you?
Don't see ya'll rushing to move the B.C. for the good of the playoff conference like JSU and Alcorn did the CCC.

Fact is fact.

Why do you continue to do this to yourself.

After reading all the other threads and this one, I have come to one conclusion. The SWAC and most of its followers are similar to some females from the 80's that were on welfare.
*They are content and complacent with their present situation.
*As long as their check is in the mail every month, they are very happy living in the apartment.
*They never try to improve themselves because they don't want to leave their comfort zone.
*They have the atittude that I can't do better because I failed when I tried one time.

People you need to remove your blinders. We (The SWAC) don't have to be a third-class conference. We have the coaches in place to compete with the FCS schools. How fast we have forgotten the Obama chant of "Yes We Can."
We must stop having the mindset of the blacks from the south: "Slavery is over"

But Frat this is not about Gram and SU in the BC. Blame your and my presidents for going along with Rudy to have a SCG. Before all that happened you could go to the playoffs. The BC didn't keep you from going. Honestly when has a SWAC team gotten screwed because of the BC outside of SU and Gram? Nobody has been ranked because we aint beating anybody outside the conference like we used too. Also we don't play as good of ball like we did in the 90s. So Alcorn and JSU moving their game was for yall's own ambition. Not to help out the rest of the conference. Coach Rob had said back then the BC would not be moved to accomodate the playoffs. Also if you look back in the late 80s, the playoffs started after the BC obviously, because Gram has gone to the playoffs a few times. So what do we do? Keep moving our games around everytime FCS says they will move the playoffs? I am for playing better competition and all. But hell what good is it if we all move our games to accomodate the playoffs and only one school goes and it aint like the playoff monies will fund our programs. The real issue is not the playoffs or BC or TDC or Lone Star Classic.

Everybody who wants the playoffs aint willing to cough up money to our schools for survival. We talk all this game. But where is our contributions to our schools. We could go to the playoffs until doomsday and not win one damn game in that deal and watch our programs fall apart financially because we keep getting sent to Montana to play. We don't give like those other folks do for their schools. That's why none of us that good of facilities. And only some of them have real good facilities. They are just dedicated into making do with what they have and their fans show up in their small stadiums no matter who they play.

Also our fans are a big problem. Only us on this board care about a playoffs. Ask most JSU casual fans or SU casual fans and they rather SU and JSU play each other every week if they could have it. LOL. We got alot of issues and it starts with us not contributing to our schools and then get mad at them when they have to play this 1-A schools or go to Classics to make money to pay for our entire athletic programs. Great Scenario Frat.......say we all move our games......JSU wins the SWAC regular season and goes to the playoffs and has to go on the road or even play at home. Do you think it would outdraw the SCG? Do you think JSU will make money off that playoff game? Do you think JSU fans would be interested overall about the playoffs? I am not talking about you, or TP, Get Ready or Robber. Fans who go anyway. But the casual Jackson, Ms fan who will show up if JSU plays another name black school and who probably will bring their band.

I remember sitting in the cold in 78 when FAMU played JSU in Memorial. This is when football fans were football fans......now that had some excitement to it. But somewhere along the way our fans changed. Not just JSU's but everybody's. We are in a tough situation. We go the playoffs for respect or we play these Classics for money.

Has anybody from the SWAC offices given thought to playing their Championship game the way C-USA does? Team with the best overall record hosts.

But Frat this is not about Gram and SU in the BC. Blame your and my presidents for going along with Rudy to have a SCG. Before all that happened you could go to the playoffs. Ain't that what I said.
Didn't I ask why in heck did JSU move the CCC to the weekend before Thanksgiving?

Didn't I ask what is the point of thinking playoff's if half the conference play's after the BID's go out.

Didn't I say each school need to start looking out for themselves and themselves only without reguard for the SWAC board?
They ain't doing shat for us..........ESPECIALLY JSU.

I could care less when the B.C. and Turkey day classis is played cause they are not going to be moved and everybody know it.
And now 2 more SWAC school's will be playing on Thanksgiving day so what's the point of all this "help other's out" bullshat when scheduling comes into play after the manditory 7 games are set.

My statement's was about JSU going along with what the idiot's in the SWAC want everytime when other school's could care less about doing shat for THE CONFERENCE as a whole.

Answer this JR.
Do you HONESTLY think another SWAC school will ever make the playoff's in any way in the age of FCS football as it is today.
Do you honestly think the SWAC has so much power, and entire division of football will make changes just for US.
If ya'll do, then ya'll are really living in a dream world. :smh:

the playoff's are history for this conference....................... END OF STORY. :smh:

I agree with you man. The SWAC needs to add two more teams and get to 12 teams. And just let everyone play each other and that would be their 11 games and we could just stay in our own little world like we want to.

Now this Lone Star Classic with PB and TxSU is going to be played as well

Who is going to go to it? I've seen no ads for it and heard about it by accident on the radio.
And how do they expect to sell tickets to everybody when you have them at two places DEEP in the hood. A catfish place and soul food place deep in drug and crime infested areas?
Somebody needs to tell them you do have alum that doesn't live in the hood and doesn't listen to black radio stations.
Just like I told my church memebers when they were upset that a concert at our church featuring Yolnada Adams didn't sell as well. I told them you guys failed to promote it. I know folks (of all races) that would have loved to go but nobody saw ads for it.
JR is right if you don't promote yourself nobody is going to know who you are.
