PEARL, Miss. ? Emary Frederick didn?t get credit for a save Thursday, but the middle reliever got as much emotionally, if not statistically.

The senior delivered in the longest outing of his career against Alcorn State?s offense, one of the toughest in college baseball, helping Southern to a 10-6 victory to open the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament at Trustmark Park.

ASU Fights But Falls in SWAC Tourney Upset Bid

Selmon Pearson's two home runs not enough to topple top seed Prairie View

Pearl, Miss - Most people thought that just being there would be enough for an Alabama State team that made the Southwest Athletic Conference tournament only after Jackson State withdrew for using ineligible players.

But Larry Watkins' Hornets nearly turned the SWAC on its ear before losing a heartbreaker to top seed Prairie View A & M 11-10.

"We knew we had a chance to open some eyes," Watkins said. "I felt good about us despite the circumstances."

Just over week ago, Watkins was forced to burn up the telephone lines trying to locate his players after they'd gone home at the end of the semester. While eager to start their summer break, they were thrilled scurry back to campus for the chance to play for the conference championship

And it showed.

The Hornets jumped on Wrandal Taylor - the SWAC Pitcher of the Year- from the get-go.

John Stevens led off with a double and knocked in by Travis Johnson's triple. Bradley Mann drove him in with a bounce out to first base, and the Hornet's were up 2-0. Before Taylor could finish the inning, Selmon Pearson launched a towering solo home run over the left field fence. ASU led 3-0 at the end of the first.

After the Panthers scratched out a run in the bottom on the second, ASU responded with one of their one on Josh Steven's heads-up base running scoring from third when the Prairie View catcher lost track of a passed ball.

The vaunted Panther offense slowly began to figure out Hornet pitcher Josh Froneberger, banging out 8 runs over the next four innings to take a 9-4 lead.

"Our kids just didn't give up," Coach Watkins said. "We came here to compete, and we were going to go down swinging."

With two out in the 8th, Pearson hit his second home run of the day, this one with Travis Johnson on board, igniting a Hornet rally.

Furquan Shamsud-Din, Bradley Mann and John Solomon had consecutive singles, with the last one scoring Shamsud-Din. Third baseman Andre Jones hammered his third home run of season for a 10-9 Hornet lead.

Prairie View's Odie Davis laid down a bunt single to start the bottom of the 8th. Wilford White then drove a long fly ball to left field Andre Jones got a glove on, but dropped after colliding with the wall. Despite Coach Watkins protesting that the ball was caught, Davis scored to tie the game.

After the Hornets failed to score, Prairie View took the win when Eugene Edwards' singled to left driving in Michael Richard.

Joshua Terrell (4-3) picked up the win for the Panthers and JaMarlon Ford (1-2) was tagged with the loss.

ASU will face Alcorn State Friday morning at 10am with the loser being eliminated from the tournament. Jauquin Respress (2-5) will start for the Hornets.

When I saw this tournament was being held in Jackson, I knew it would be some schit for ASU. Cause we always get cheated over there. In any sport. That's how they operate.

What did the umps do? In baseball you got to hold on to the ball even if come in contact with another player or the wall, there is no 3 second or 2 step rule about holding the ball and making it a catch.

The umps ruled a caught ball as not a catch, allowing the tying run to score.

The SWAC really doesnt need to have any post season tournaments in Jackson. :smh:

Why would we cheat ASU? When a team lose it is always somebody cheating. Is it posible to just lose. Jackson State is not in it so why cheat ASU?

well, I can think of a few reasons.

When a team lose it is always somebody cheating. Is it posible to just lose.

Yes, it is, but with a track record like that, it raises red flags every time. Maybe after a few years of some objective officiating there, then things would change.
