Willie “Rat†McGowan lived to see another day as a college baseball coach.
Southern and Grambling, meanwhile, saw little more than water and wind.
On the third day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament, McGowan and the Alcorn State Braves battled through a 2-hour, 57-minute rain delay to post a 7-1 victory over Texas Southern, forcing a rematch between the two teams today.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars and Tigers had barely warmed up when their Friday night game was suspended because of yet another rainstorm.
Southern and Grambling has just started the bottom of the first inning when, at 9:36 p.m., umpires called for the tarp. Officials from SU and the SWAC huddled up and, just before 10, suspended the game.
“The rain was steady and we saw an incoming cell, which was pretty much heading straight for us,†associate commissioner Duane Lewis said. “We didn’t know what time it would stop — and from there, it would’ve been at least an hour to get the playing field ready.â€
