Re: SWAC baseball tournament 2012 Day 3
In baseball, especially tournament play, you want pitchers to work very efficient (low pitch count per out), so they can go longer allowing you to use as few pitchers as possible, so you will have more quality fresh arms later in the tournament. When pitchers are used to certain level, they have to sit for a certain period of time, which make unavailable for you later. Additionally if they are use and are available, they may not be as effective if the arm isn't as fresh.
Another key component is error free defense. Errors put runners on base that should be in the dugout. They usually turn into runs against you (a baseball murphy law). The same holds true for walks from pitchers. It is better for a batter to earn a hit than a walk or error. The percentages for getting that baserunner out are higher.
And the defense that makes that extra effort play to get a runner out that could have easily been on base, gives his team and advantage. Because, there is a runner that should have been on base that is now in the dugout. Those get ole' Mo to moving for you and against the opponent.
So SU, no walks and no errors and keep finding ways to get runners on base to allow ole' Mo to make it do what it do... Clutch players make clutch plays in clutch moments. So, don't give the opponent unearned points and allow the clutch players to make the clutch playes in the clutch moment for you. It just happens and is not forced.
Peace!!!
