After a stunning first-round loss that put an otherwise successful season in peril, the Southern baseball team regrouped Thursday, dumping Grambling 8-0 in an elimination game at Lee-Hines Field.
So they survived to play another day. Good for them.
Now, however, in addition to facing Alcorn State at 9 a.m. Friday — potentially the first of two games in furnace-like conditions — the Jaguars have to deal with another issue.
Commencement. Of all the things that might cause a serious pothole on Southern’s path to a championship, it’s the spring graduation ceremony.
It begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center, which shares a parking lot with Lee-Hines Field. And it’s fouling up the Jaguars’ pitching rotation.
No, seriously.
Commencement figures to be a traffic nightmare; SU and tournament officials are all but begging fans to show up early for the ballgames.
But it also presents Brian “Doc” Foster with a serious problem.
Under typical circumstances, Foster — a senior right-hander, the Jaguars’ No. 3 starter — would take the mound Friday morning for SU’s third tournament game.
