SWAC attendance analyzed

Through week 10 of this football campaign, I have listed the number of fans each SWAC football team has played before so far this season. My figures were taken from those published by Fiyah and Machiavelli in these forums.
Southern 208,659; AAMU, 186,452; GSU, 183,430, JSU, 178,458; ASU, 175,427; and PV, 140,869. The teams of the other three universities have played before fewer than 100,000 fans. I should add here that three usually well-attended games involving SWAC schools have yet to be played: Turkey Day, Capitol City and Bayou Classic games.

If you were to take away (not include) the attendance from the "true" classic games, and I do not consider the "PV-TxSo" and the "SU-JSU" games to be true classic games, the numbers stack up like this:
SU 208,659 (176,492 if JSU game not included)
JSU 115,890 (83,723 if SU game not included)
GSU 86,180
PV 79,227 (48,878 if TxSo game not included)
ASU 64,402
AAMU 61,504

Of the top twenty highest-attended games involving SWAC schools, SU has appeared in 8 of them; ASU, AAMU, and GSU have each appeared in 4 of them; JSU, UAPB, and PV each in 3 of them; AlSU and TxSo each in 2 of them; and Valley in only 1 of them.

Thus far this season, SU's highest attended home game was its homecoming game against Texas College (27,675); JSU's was its game against valley (15,500); Bama State's was its game against SU, (17,364); AAMU's was its homecoming game against SU (19,890); GSU's was its game against AlSU (18,581); Alcorn's was its game against SU (32,151); and PV's was its home game against SU (20,830). Home game attendances for the other three SWAC schools were not analyzed.

For what its worth, I think it is clear where SWAC prowess lies in terms of football fan support, at home as well as on the road. And even with JSU having the dismal seasons they have endured the last couple of years, JSU's attendance ranks better than some schools who are enjoying banner seasons. Much kudos to JSU!
 



Well since you do not consider the PV-TSU game as a classic game then PV's highest home game attendance is 30,349 since they were the designated home team this year.

Mr. Earle,

That is some good information you posted. I am glad to see that Southern's attendance did not take a spiral because of the increased ticket prices' this year.

After all the HUB-BUB was made when we were to play the first game of the season, I thought it was a classic, contract's signed and can't be broken. :smh:

It's still a regularly scheduled home and home game that is played at a neutral site on Labor Day Weekend. When it use to be the last game of the year it was still played at a neutral site. Marketing made this game what it is now being the first game of the year to kick off the new season. It has boosted attendance from when it was the last game of the year being played right before Thanksgiving.

Ya'll were never scheduled to play TSU on that date. That was some mess that was created by your AD, no one from TSU even considered that gaffe on ya'lls part.

PV/TXso play this game every year .....blah, blah.......
This game has been set in stone ...........blah, blah .........

Getting another team was never a problem on our end.

Let us not forget the fact that Bama State has played one less home game than everybody else this year, thanks to Hurricane Ivan.

Bama State is the only team in the SWAC, (maybe the only team in all of division I-AA) that has THREE HOME GAMES REMAINING ! ! !

Those THREE games will go a long way toward our average, and total attendance.
 



I'll let anyone from Alabama A&M who was in Jackson Saturday defend out numbers for homecoming. Anyone who was there knows that 14,000 is not an undercount but a CRIMINAL UNDERCOUNT. lol. They should be prosecuted. smh. There was 30,000 people there EASY. 30K is being nice to the undercounters. smh....probably closer to 35K. all I can say is WOW to these numbers every week at memorial. lol.
 
Obviously, the powers that be at JSU don't see the "undercount" as a problem, cause yall have been screaming this for years. And nothing has changed.
Or either, somebody just will accept anything.
 
I agree MH....that's the case with alot of things. lol. But seriously...ask anyone from AAMU how many people they think were there.

MH, we could give a fugg about attendance this. This was not as severe of an undercount as it was when AlaState came to our homecoming but it was an undercount. But that ain't even a topic of discussion. I remember the day when all we had to do was complain about attendance... :(

I'm not questioning if there was whatever amount you said (30, 35K).

I'm just questioning why the undercounts are always the case (why is it "allowed" to be the case)

The Clarion Ledger reported that JSU's per game rental fee is based on ticket sales... So it benefits JSU to undercount the ticket sales.

It's worst than sharecropping. That's the best way to describe Jackson State University's deal with the entity that owns the school's football stadium. The sharecropping model, an economic arrangement once common in Mississippi and elsewhere, forced dirt-poor workers to farm someone else's land for a share of what was produced.

Not only should the antiquated agreement be abandoned, but also the state should stop putting money into the aging facility and give JSU the opportunity to plow its own field.

Jackson State, the only state-supported university without a campus stadium, played six games last season at 60,000- seat Memorial Stadium. It is by far the commission's key customer. The agency would probably go bankrupt without JSU's product, but because of JSU's lack of options, the commission is in control.

<b>JSU rented the facility each game for 7 percent of ticket sales, or $15,000, whichever was greater.</b> The stadium commission gets two-thirds of the concession proceeds and it retains all of the parking rights, including fees for tailgating.

Well the game is set in stone no matter what!!!

It's become a tradition and even 2 of the PWC's (UH & Rice) in Houston is using it as a model and has moved their game to Labor Day weekend over the last few years. They even have signed a agreement with Reliant Stadium to play the game there every year just as PV-TSU has done. Our game was on saturday night and theirs was on sunday. This could even turn into a double-header game with one being played in the early afternoon and the other at night.

So whats the (your) problem?

I know all schools may have concerns with the bottom line, but to what extent will we go?

I didn't say they were doing it.... I just said it benefitted them to have a lower atendance. :swink:

If you look at a game with 30,000 X $16(est) X .07, you're talking about a 33K+ rental fee for that game.
