NFL Draft Not What It Used to Be in SWAC
By Mac Taylor, AOL BlackVoices' SWAC columnist
The once powerful Southwestern Athletic Conference is now registering just of above a blip on the National Football League radar these days.

With a feeling this can't possibly be the case, I consulted a close family friend with deep NFL connections and posed the questions to him.

Where have all the SWAC draftees gone?

Have we become a league with no draftable players? Are we a league with no dominate or standout player?

After an intense discussion, we concluded there are a couple of factors playing key roles in not only this weekend's draft but also in drafts of the future.

At the top of the list: conference wide the SWAC is down this year.

There were no players that registered on the NFL sonar. The fact is, the SWAC simply doesn't have that star athlete this year.

Known for talented players throughout the years such as Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Robert Brazile, Steve McNair and Doug Williams, intergration has offered the top African-American student-athletes a slew of options and opportunity outside of the traditional HBCU.

Also, the surge of popularity among mid-major programs such as Miami-Ohio, Marshall and Pittsburgh has offered an opportunity which is much more wide spread therefore leaving Division I-AA and historically black programs vying for your third and fourth tier players.

Once a breeding ground for your most talented black athletes, programs such as Jackson State, Grambling and Mississippi Valley have all combined for less than five draft picks since 2000 and league wide the conference has produced less than 10.

Jackson State has had the most success in the NFL draft since the start of the new millenium with three players taken in 2000, including two first round picks in Sylvester Morris (21st overall) and Rashard Anderson (23rd overall) while Southern University accounts for the last player picked from the SWAC. Lenny Williams was taken in last year's draft by the Tampa Bay Bucanneers as the 252nd pick overall in the seventh round.

The second bomb to hurt HBCU players is free agency.

Although there is no official record of the number of SWAC players currently playing in the NFL, we can be fairly certain that a large number of the group were either taken in the late rounds of the draft or signed free agent contracts.

Once paying big bucks to the cream of the HBCU crop NFL teams are now getting bargain basement deals financially, courtesy of the free agency market.

Yes, the players are getting the private workouts time and time again but they are not getting the big-time contracts during their early years in the league.

So whose name might flash across the screen during this weekend's draft or who might we be reading about in weeks to come on the free agency front?

The best candidate in this year's SWAC class to get drafted will be defensive end/outside linebacker Kenneth Pettway of Grambling.

Pettway led the G-Men with 45 tackles, including 28 solos and 16 for a loss of 65 yards and nine quarterback sacks for a loss of 53 yards including a safety. He also performed excellently at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, a big plus for an HBCU prospect.

He was also named first team all-SWAC, first team selection on the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Black College all-star team and was named to the first team all-Louisiana Sports Writers Association College Football.

Possibly getting the free agency nod will be: Alabama A&M's offensive lineman Robert Lewis, Jackson State wide receiver Chris Jones and Southern University's offensive tackle Miniya Smith and defensive backs Kevin Moffett and Ahmad Treaudo, Grambling's place kicker Brian Morgan, defensive tackle Aqua Etefia and linebacker John Petty and safety Michael Daigre, Alcorn State's linebacker Dwan Wilson and wide receiver Reginald Glover of Alabama State.

I really don't see a turnaround anytime soon. There is no competition with larger schools among our black athletes. Athletes will look at it as the SWAC schools don't have the facilities, network exposure, BIG name, or the major thing "MONEY". Where are we as conference to go.

You right. We have talked about this so many times on this board.
The only thing that's going for HBCU's is the education and the unique Black college experience. I think it will change though.

Man please, the talent is there, folks just have to be bold enough to take a chance instead of using the cop out of competition. Robert Mathis is doing pretty well. That cat Troutman at PB is a sack machine. All these receivers running through all the secondaries in the SWAC, then u got Bruce Eugene, Keldrick Williams, and a host of other folks.

That's true. We still have plenty of talent here and good recruits coming in. But are they high caliber NFL prospects. Bruce may be, don't know. But it's still only a handful. I talk to my kids at school all the time. One of them made the statement that all kids with talent should go out of state. I told him that was about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. But these are the things that our kids are being brain-washed into thinking.

My cousin graduates this year. Coaches from Alcorn and Delta State recruited him. His HC told him and his parents that he would do better playing for a white school instead of attending Alcorn. At that point it doesn't matter how you sell your school. Master told me and that's what I'm going to do. We first need this slave mentality out of our heads before we can move ahead.

Next bigtime receivers to play in the NFL out of the SWAC...better believe it.

Every DI-AA conference goes through a lull...maybe its the SWACs turn...TV contracts are on the way....so more exposure will help. More national games will be broadcast...facilities help...no doubt about it...most of these HBCUs are so far behind its a crying shame...but that's besides the point...facilities don't put athletes in the NFL.

From an NFL insider...scouts weigh NFL prospects on the marquee teams in the SWAC...trust me...Southern and Grambling. That's all they care about...what did your guys do against Southern and Grambling?...everything else is secondary.

Other considerations...what is their 40 time?...OK...and what is their 40 time when I (the scout) put them on a track and test them...how do they act when testing in the weight room...do they pout...can they push through the exercise...do they ask a lot of questions as to how many more exercises? Many variables go into examining these athletes...stats for the most part don't even matter...unless someone is putting up unheard numbers because lets face it people the competition is not top notch.

If you want to come out of the SWAC you gotta be a DOG...a mean-tough SOB with a swagger and some back up to go with it...we have some kids...it'll get better soon. No need to fret...just no mean SOB this year.

P.S. - Don't always take out the race card so quick...the coach may have told the kid that because at Alcorn, Valley, JSU or wherever...he may not get a great look if he's someone who could play at FSU. I would love for all these kids to play at black schools but face it if I'm a kid with the thinking this day in age...I'm going to the school where 90,000 people pack the house every weekend (even if it RAINS!)...where I'm on TV every weekend...where I have tremendous facilities...can eat as much as I want in the caf...and maybe here and again a booster drops me a couple bucks for having a great game (it happens)...no knock on the HBCUs...but that's where some of the thinking may be if you're a white coach with a talented black athlete...I don't necessarily think its all about white school/black school...he could be looking out for his player?...that's just my humble opinion without taking race into consideration...in other words why go to a small college with no national exposure when you can go to a big school and if you're good enough be Da Man.

One more thing...a lot of kids fall through the cracks...coincidence that more HBCU'ers than other schools...maybe...but many kids fall through the cracks...but no matter the school they attended...if its their dream to play pro...then its up to them to make it happen...when they get an opportunity the have to shine...many of those kids the author mentioned are in NFL tryouts as we speak...its up to them to make their dreams reality...in terms of those kids getting drafted...strength of schedule must improve...these schools have to stop picking up the big gate games and play some out-of-conference powers...Grambling is taking the charge vs. Washington State this year...if Eugene has a solid outing against a team like that...it'll turn heads...I know everyone can't play a team like WSU and GSU will probably get drilled but the point is if one player excells...he will have a shot especially if he's a junior or senior...STRENGTH of schedule is big...that will earn the conference some respect...respect it does not have right now.

We as SWAC alums need to "talk up" our conference and respective schools. Whether it is speaking with a student, parent or our associates out side of the SWAC family, we must be equipped with knowledge of our accolades and point them out. All of us our ambassadors for our great institutions....Peace

What we need to do is be a financial support to our black schools and encourage businesses that we are worth the bullions of dollars they want to put into these other schools. Arkanasas just got Billions!!!!! from walmart, as if they needed it! hell, what did any black schools get?

I'm sure that very few D1AA conferences had a lot of draft picks. The NFL knows it can get these players cheap as free agents or late round picks.

Free Agency is the big factor IMO. The NFL teams do not have share the pool of money with HBCU players. As long as teams are protected by revenue sharing they can pick the players they want from any conference. Many scholars believe and I do to that America has a color problem more than a race problem. Therefore, when we mention race it is often ignored.
