SWAC 2025-2026 Basketball scores

UAB basketball upset by Alabama State in first loss to a SWAC opponent

UAB guard Ahmad Robinson blew by Alabama State’s defense for an effortless layup to open the game Tuesday night. Nothing came easy for the Blazers after that.

UAB was unable to overcome an ice-cold night from beyond the arc, suffering a 77-74 upset loss to ASU inside Bartow Arena. The loss marks the Blazers’ first defeat to a SWAC team in program history. UAB entered the night 78-0 against SWAC opponents and was a 19.5-point favorite over ASU.

UAB shot 2 of 20 from 3 on the night. The Blazers missed their first 18 shots from deep before Chance Westry hit two in the final minute. By then, it was too late, as ASU staved off a rally attempt.

“When you go 2-for-20, guys, and one of them is banked in, your margin for error, obviously, is going to be very, very thin,” UAB head coach Andy Kennedy said. “It’s remarkable that we were in the game. We went 4-for-25 against N.C. State. Again, math’s not great, but that’s 6-for-45.

“You go 4-for-25 against N.C. State, you’re going to get beat by 25 like we did. You go 2-for-20 here … it’s going to put pressure on the other parts of your game.”
