Just heard on the radio that Sandra Day O'connor has announced that she is retiring. I'm currently looking for a story on the Net.

Senators had earlier said they'd already started talking about names

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is retiring, the court announced Friday. The news came on the last day of the court's 2004-2005 session.

Court watchers had expected a Supreme Court vacancy during Bush's second term. There was talk that O'Connor, 75, and Justice John Paul Stevens, 85, might consider stepping down. And Chief Justice William Rehnquist, 80, has cancer.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he's been talking to Democratic leader Harry Reid about nominees for a potential vacancy on the Supreme Court but doesn't have any inside information on whom President Bush might nominate.

This is why it was so important to elect the right person as President.

As a rule of thumb, I don't believe in conspiracy theories. However, I am very concerned with the credibility of US Elections nowadays. I an also concerned about the mental stability as well as common sense of our current Supreme Court after that Emminent Domain ruling.

On a side note: Let's not forget that irregularities existed in Dubya's first election and he did not win the popular vote. Hence, it was not the will of the people to begin with.

I whole heartedly agree, too much evidence out there that's swept under the rug. The political Fight is about to get REAL NASTY. The Religious right wont accept anything less than a stout conservative. This is their golden opportunity to change America and If Bush doesn't deliver I can guarantee a mass number of Evangelical Christians will leave the the GOP (By way of third party ot sitting out future elections).

Last but not least I expect the nuclear option to be used against and Democratic Fillibuster efforts.

Toi, Dr., You are right. We are in trouble. Bush has said that he will seek input from the democratic leadership in naming SC judges. I sure hope so.
I was looking for Rinquest(sp) to die but I did not expect SDO to retire.

The scary thing is that Rehnquist may retire or die before Bush is out of office.

I think so many people were looking for Rehnquist to retire that this really blindsided the political pundits.

Will this SC nomination define Bush presidency? He has a chance to shift the balance of power completely to the right that will shape the court for the next 30 to 40 years. I am particularly interested in the ladies opinions on this appointment. I believe you know where I'm going with this. :alicia:

I am not a lady but tell me where you are going...abortion?

During the Campaign this was my biggest concern, that Bush would name several SC judges. This will be his legacy. He can shape America for almost 100 years.
In the next 2 years he can name 4 judges!

Yeah, I think that is what he is referring to. I think the conservatives want a judge who will tip the scales in their direction as far as Roe v. Wade is concerned.

I also agree with your concern about Bush appointing judges. He may have the opportunity to appoint another one before he leaves office.

Do all the judges have a polictal affiliation...shouldn't the next appointed judge be impartial.

They're all suppose to be impartial and yes, they belong to political parties. O'Connor was a centrist and was the deciding vote on most issues. There are currently two dems and seven repubs on the court. Breyer and Ginsburgh are the two appointed by Clinton. The rest were appointed by Nixon, Reagan, and Bush 41.

O'Connor leaving will shift the balance on the court. In which direction is the question?? Yes she was the deciding vote (5 to 4) in recent Roe v Wade constitutional challenges. Her replacement is critically when the next ruling comes regarding Roe v Wade and the direction of women reproduction rights. :sperm:

Afraid of what? LLEH I'm more afraid of walking to my car at night (IN A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD) than the Supreme Court...
You need to consider how the court affects your life. They can determine if your wife dies during delivery, if your property can be taken from you, if you get an education, when and where you can pray, if you can talk about God, if and how much you can sue about,... anything that comes before the court may directly affect you.

No. Just want to be.

Now...

did I not tell y'all this was coming? How many times have I made reference of the abortion issue and the SC? Women, the right to choose what you do with your bodies is about to be taken away from you. And that will be just the start!

How many of you have read G. Orwell's 1984? If you haven't, I suggest picking up a copy!

:smh:

Don't just want to be, come on and enroll. Your LSAT score needs to be no lower than 149 and your undergrad GPA in the top 25% of your class. Your analysis on this issue was right on point.
