Sugar Bowl to be at LSU if hotels return

NEW ORLEANS -- Work crews were busy in several on New Orleans' major hotels on Wednesday, repairing damage from Hurricane Katrina.

That's good news for the Sugar Bowl.

If enough hotels in the New Orleans area are up and running by December, this year's Sugar Bowl will be played at LSU's Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

If they aren't, Atlanta's Georgia Dome would be a likely alternative, Sugar Bowl executive director Paul Hoolahan is expected to tell the commissioners of the 11 Division I-A conferences at a BCS meeting Tuesday in Chicago.

"Obviously, this will not be a normal New Orleans Sugar Bowl experience," said Hoolahan, who got his first look at the bowl offices in the Superdome on Wednesday. "But I think everyone will take a little disruption, maybe more than a little disruption, to get this done.

"Our preference is to play the game in Louisiana, because the Sugar Bowl is a Louisiana event. But we are pursuing a parallel track to ensure that there is a Sugar Bowl this year."

Sugar Bowl officials will be anxiously watching the progress of restoring the Superdome, something that is expected to take at least a year.

The new BCS contract cycle begins in 2006. The Sugar Bowl is scheduled to play host not only to the national championship game after the 2007 season but the "regular" Sugar Bowl under the double-hosting format that starts next season.

Hoolahan said playing the game anywhere but New Orleans would be difficult beyond 2006. That could mean the BCS awarding the Sugar Bowl spot in the championship rotation to another bowl.

"I wouldn't be honest if I didn't tell you I'm feeling the pressure," Hoolahan said. "And I'd be foolish not to acknowledge that the commissioners don't have some of those thoughts in their minds right now."

Bowl officials hope the state will make a quick commitment to restore the Superdome and that work will begin soon.

"Our job is to be part of the recovery of the economy," Sugar Bowl president Mark Romig said. "We realize that there will have to be a reassessment of the Superdome and issues like rebuilding the levees will take first priority. But it is our hope that major league football remains in New Orleans on both the college and professional level. I don't want to speculate any more beyond this year, except to say that the Sugar Bowl will still be around."

The Sugar Bowl game on Jan. 2 will match the SEC champion -- provided that team is not playing for the BCS championship in the Rose Bowl -- and an at-large team.

Hey BC committee. Did you hear what he just said. It is a Louisiana event.

Now that the white folks are doing it, you can move it to S'port now.

True!! Good Point!!

Interesting, as well, is the fact that the "White Folks" did not seriously entertain Shreveport as a viable option.

Interesting is that fact that they are at least trying to keep the game in the State of Louisiana. Interesting is the fact that the Sugar Bowl is not entertaining Houston as a viable option.

Interesting indeed! I want to play the game in Tiger Stadium, and if it CANNOT be in Baton Rouge, then the ONLY option should be Houston.

The Bayou Classic certianly is a Louisiana event and should be played here. Birmingham's mayor, talking out of both sides of his mouth, told us as much on the Smack Board.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution say the GEORGIA DOME is trying to get the Sugar Bowl.

Atlanta is not in La. either so whats the difference.

...makes me wonder if alot of this griping is really about keeping the game in La. or just some grudge against Houston. :shame:

Dude, let me make this clear. This really has nothing to do with Houston. I don't think of Houston that much to have anything against it. All I am saying is that this is a Louisiana event. This is the state's biggest in state rivalry. It needs to be played in the state if possible. If it is played in Houston, fine. But the effort needs to be made to play this game on Louisiana.

I can agree its an La. event and should remain in La. IF POSSIBLE. A comment was made about the Sugar Bowl officials not looking at Shreveport if the hotels in N.O. were not ready and it was followed by

as if something is wrong with Houston or ATL is just as good as having it in La. Excuse me if I read it wrong.

Naw. Nothing against H-town but imo it needs to be in the BOOT. If its not held in the boot the next best place would be Atlanta. Nothing against PV/TSU but the Bayou Classic shouldn't have to share a weekend with nobody. This is our game/classic and I would be outraged if those schools are allowed to partcipate in any Bayou Classic event. This game is a showcase for Southern and Grambling. Louisiana fans are the ones that support these teams every week of the season and they shouldn't be inconvienced. Keep the game in the boot. If the Louisiana politicians have something to do with it, like I heard from a very good source they do, it will be played in BR.

I wish Ralph Slaughter and the rest of the Bayou Classic Committee go ahead and make the announcement official.

Also, I wish you would realize that Texas Southern and Prairie View ain't trying to steal no damn spotlight or steal y'all thunder from y'all. Dayum, a natural disaster has happened that no one anticipated. Everyone will have to compromise and try to get this game back to New Orleans AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

You didnt know?
McClelland and Blackwell were seen breaching the levees. Dr. Wright drove the getaway car and Slade had 'lookout'. :uhoh:

Re: Sugar Bowl to be at LSU if hotels return

So if the BC stays in the boot, who does everyone think would play the 300K fee LSU is charging the Saints for each game. LSU says it costs 300K to play in Tiger Stadium without turning a profit.LOL!!!

We know Independence Stadium is out since it does not have the luxury suites to support the sponsors associated with this game. This goes for Legion field and Veterens Stadium also.

Re: Sugar Bowl to be at LSU if hotels return

I would love to see the game in La, but if we can't reasonablly do it then I am fine with Houston, it is only 1.5 hours from La. and so many of our people are there it will still be LA folks almost everywhere. My only thing would be it should stand on it's own. For example, the Battle of the Bands I don't want to see 4 bands show up. Whatever them other two schools do is cool (and I would come early enough to go to the PV-TSU game) but don't associate it with the Bayou Classic.

True, but you cannot deny the fact, that the SEC has a tie-in with the BCS Sugar Bowl in Louisiana, which is obviously in the geographic region along with Atlanta, Georgia (which of course is not in-state) as mention in the article as an alternative (Atlanta's Georgia Dome) place to play the Sugar Bowl is also within the SEC footprint. Similar to the fact that Houston, Texas is outside of Louisiana, but still in the SWAC footprint.

The fact remains that the Sugar Bowl Representative did not mention the Shreveport as alternative place to play the game, while naming a city out of state (Atlanta, Georgia) as an alternative.

Re: Sugar Bowl to be at LSU if hotels return

Comparing the Sugar Bowl to the Bayou Classic is silly... I'll leave it there.

Louisiana still eyed for Sugar Bowl

Atlanta is an option, but college football officials hope to stage January's Sugar Bowl in the state of Louisiana, SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday.

With the Superdome in ruins following Hurricane Katrina, the Jan. 2 game will be forced to find a new home. Division I-A conference commissioners will meet next week in Chicago to discuss options, which also include LSU's Tiger Stadium.

"Right now, I know that everybody involved, including the SEC, hopes that the game is played in Louisiana," Slive said. "I know that the city of New Orleans and the state want to keep the game at home. And we should give them every opportunity to do that. But right now we just really want to focus on the human element of this tragedy. We can talk about games later."

The Superdome needs at least $100 million in repairs and it's uncertain when ? or if ? it can be used as a sporting venue again. Sugar Bowl officials wearing Hazmat suits went through the facility Wednesday to gather what possessions they could from their offices, which will be moved to Baton Rouge.

Atlanta to host Sugar Bowl

Sugar Bowl officials have called a news conference for 10 a.m. Friday to formally announce that this year's BCS game will be moved from New Orleans to Atlanta.

The announcement will be held at the Georgia Dome with Gov. Sonny Perdue and SEC commissioner Mike Slive expected to attend.

Kickoff for the game will be at 8 p.m. on Jan. 2.

The executive committee of the Sugar Bowl met late Tuesday night and voted to move their game from the Louisiana Superdome, which was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, to Atlanta.

Contacted Wednesday, Paul Hoolahan, the executive director of the Sugar Bowl, would not comment about the decision.

"We've said all along that we would announce something by the end of this week," said Hoolahan. "Right now we want to stick to that timetable."

But several people close to the decision confirmed that the vote to move the Sugar Bowl to Atlanta had taken place.

Hoolahan told the Journal-Constitution on Sept. 30 that he had been in Atlanta working on contingency plans in case the game needed to be moved from New Orleans.
