How much did Pete pay em to not get embarrased by UAPB?

Hardman files complaint about missed calls to SWAC

NATE OLSON/OF THE COMMERCIAL STAFF

Arkansas-Pine Bluff was ruined by special teams miscues last Saturday night in a 14-13 loss to Southern.

Upon reviewing the game tape on Sunday, UAPB Coach Lee Hardman found three more costly errors, but those mistakes were made by the game's officials not by the players.

Hardman said assistant head coach Roger Totten noticed, while reviewing the tape, that the Jaguars had 12 players on the field for three plays in-a-row, with 4:27 to go in the game.

Hardman filed a complaint with Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Officials Supervisor George Coleman on Tuesday and over-nighted a tape of the game to Coleman to review on Wednesday.

"All I'm trying to get is ... the officials need to be professionals and not make mistakes that are going to hurt a team," Hardman said. "I know they aren't going to replay the game, or give us the game or anything like that, but at least they need to be made aware and need to be reprimanded in some form. That's just a bad, bad situation to be put in. There is no way the officials should not see that when it happens three times in-a-row.

"That's a serious ballgame. We go from 1-1 in the conference to 0-2. It really put our backs against the wall."

UAPB faced a 4th-and-4 play at midfield and got down to the 22-yard line after running back Phillip Doolin took a pitch and threw a pass to wide receiver Korea McKay.

Hardman said the first of the three infractions came soon after that first down was made.

The penalties were not called and UAPB, after a five-yard illegal substitution penalty, ran the ball three times setting up a 4th-and-3 play at the Southern 13-yard line.

Hardman called on senior kicker Aaron Wall to kick a 31-yard field goal with just over two minutes to play that would have given UAPB the lead. However, Wall missed the field goal.

After seeing the tape, Hardman is wondering what might have been if one of the three penalties had been called. A defensive team is penalized for having 12 men on the field by giving the offense 10 yards and an automatic first down.

"We would have been inside the 10, definitely so," Hardman said. "Yeah, it (the no-calls) made a big difference. We would have been 1st-and-10 on the 10 instead of 4th-and-3 on the 13.

"(Roger) Totten told me about it, and I wouldn't watch it (the tape) last night (Monday) because I was so mad."

Coleman said he would review the tape when he received it and would contact Hardman with his opinion of the plays in question. But he declined to reveal what punishment, if any, would be dolled out to the seven officials if it was determined they had indeed missed the calls.

"I will not divulge to the press what action is taken," Coleman said. "It is not a matter of public record.

"I will review the tape, and I will tell him if his accusation was correct or not."

Gulf South Conference Director of Football Officials Billy Johnson said in his NCAA Division II conference, where just six officials are used instead of the seven deployed in 1-AA, blatant missed calls like those Hardman is alleging are dealt with harshly.

Johnson said that members of his crew that miss fundamental calls like the extra-player penalty, would be reprimanded for missing it once, suspended one game for missing it twice and suspended two games for missing it three plays in-a-row.

"That is a basic call to make sure both teams are playing on a level playing field," Johnson said. "You can start with 10 guys, but you can't have 12 out there.

"My guys (officials) may only be able to count to 11, but they know if there is one more left over after that. You have seven guys counting on each play. There is no way they should have missed that. That is inexcusable."

Southern Coach Pete Richardson said he was unaware of Hardman's objection.

"I don't know anything about that," he said. "I don't have any comment on it because I don't know anything about it."

UAPB and Southern were both flagged for having an extra man on the field during the course of the game, and Richardson said he emphasized to his players to be conscious about how many players were on the field from that point forward.

"We aren't deliberately going out there and doing something like that (using 12 players)," Richardson said.

Hardman said he believes Richardson and that it was an innocent mistake that the officials missed.

"I wouldn't think another coach would cheat like that," Hardman said. "I just wouldn't want to think that."

I understand Bucky being upset, but why did he have to wait to see it on film. You mean to tell me that he can't count when the game is going on live. If it happened for 3 consecutive plays, shouldn't someone on your staff noticed? Doesn't your offensive coordinator look at coverages to determine what plays to call? That's the mofo who should give back his game check. I know your qb is young, but when he came to the line didn't he see an extra player? Why not bring it to the referees attention!

Don't blame Pete...while the jaguars defense was on the field, he probably ran to the store to get Ike some ice water.

MOOT!!

Southern might have had 12 men on the field, but Bucky can't blame no one but his DAYUM self for this loss ...

*not focusing on special teams in practice ... what kind of STOOPID isht is that??*

:redhot:

Well, I would think that responsibility falls in the hand of the refs. All calls fall in the hand of the refs, especially presnap calls.

Actually, the starting QB had gotten hurts 3 or 4 plays before these missed calls.

If the SWAC doesn't do anything about these missed calls, then they are saying they accept lousy, sorry refs.

Now how the hell do you blame that...

on SU?

I ain't seen a zebra on the field yet that gave us ANY calls this season, last season, the season before that....?

If we had 12 on the field, it's a penalty. If you hold, it's a penalty.

If we had ref's on the field with Jag caps on and calling 98% of the penalties against UAPB, then I guess it's ok to assume we cheated...somehow, but we are probably one of the most penalized teams in the SWAC, so therefore I don't believe that accusation holds water!

DS,

I agree with you bruh. But Hardemann obviously was asleep at the wheel. How many times have you sat in the stands and count players? As a former high school player and youth league coach, I automatically look over the defense to see how they are aligned. When there is an extra player, it stands out like a sore thumb. Your coaches should have caught this as it happened.

Umm Nita!

The heading says it all!!!

I do agree that we have pitiful ref's!!! That has been known since 19-er, well probably since day 1.

cop-out u know ur damn coaches suppose to be keeping tabs on that along with players and that lame excuse that the starting qb was out ....  please

Stop making excuses for the SWAC sorry azz refs. Hell, if that is the case, the coaches should be given a flag and then we don't need a ref.

If its on TAPE that the defense had 12 men on the field 3 plays in a row, THEN that means we have lousy refs. I'm sure that is one of the first responsibilities of a ref EVERY play.

bluedog,
I have said it before, I don't understand SUckbonics. Please put a comma, period, capital letter, or SOMETHING in your post.

Mike, I have to disagree with you on this one. Its the OFFICIALS job to count the players on each play. Its his job to make sure the correct number of players are on the field everytime. A QB may never pick that up. Usually the only way I know is if 2 players run on and only 1 runs off. This is not cheating on SUs part. I cant beleive anyone would even make that comment. Why would SU take a chance on giving PB an automatic first down. Its poor coaching on SUs part, but SU cheating is not an option here. SWAC officials just keep getting away with this type of incompetence over and over and nothing is ever done about it.

Hell, shouldn't SOUTHERN'S coaches have known if they had more than 11 men on the field? Ours aren't the only ones who need to be able to count!

EGADS!!!

I AGREE 100% WITH GR ON THIS ISSUE!!! IS THIS THE SMACK BOARD???

Nita,

What happens is that guys get so hyped about "specialization" schemes, especially when the schemes are changed in practice the week of the game, that they tend to get confused when they are supposed to go in and when they are to sit out. Extra coaches in Div. 1A usually help with those situations. So guys who don't normally play defense on "3rd down and long" end up snoozin' after a big play and get caught in the wrong schemes. This is one of those things that using multiple players will do to you which is why you need an extra set of eyes on the coaching staff.

As far as the ref's are concerned, see GR's comments.

snicker......you won't have to worry bout the refs this weekend.....they won't even be a factor after the 1st Qtr.

Bucky, Secret Squirrel whateva your buck tooth arse in the clock!! Literally!!!!

I could agree that might happen for a play, but for 3 plays????
3 plays in a row????????
That aint a case of a player snoozin there!!!!!

The more I think about it, the worse it gets. Especially in a one point game, late in the game, and that crap aint called for three plays in a row!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry but Bucky has a right to be mad as L bout that crap!!!!!!!

Dear Bucky,

Dear Bucky,

You suck. You wouldn't be raising hell about these 12 men if your kicker ...

... YOU KNOW ... your KICKER ... the one who is a part of the SPECIAL TEAMS that did not have a lot of emphasis placed on them during practice the week before the game ... you know now, Bucky? Ok ... I digress ...

... hadn't NUTTED UP and missed a THIRTY YARD DAYUM field goal!

Bucky, honey, what I want you to do is this: On Saturday, I want you to lose to the HoneyBees of A-Lynch-Bama State Loonyversity ... yup ... just go on down there and give that game away, too ... wrap that ***** up in pretty paper with bows and ribbons if you want ... but be on your toes, and take a dayum calculator, so you'll always be SURE of how many MEN are on the field at ANY GIVEN TIME ...

You're arse is in a sling, and you KNOW I know ... so go on and hang yourself in 'Bama ... the ofays don't even have to do it for you!

Insincerely yours,

Uuuuuhhhh, MH

Did Totten (or whatever his name is) review the tape at the point where the refs denied an obvious field goal by the Jags? Did Buckey get mad about that too?

Why Nita? Why? Buckey has already secured his job, why do you want him to give the game away now? Maybe if you all have lost to Valley then you would have a chance. But, with that win against Valley, Buckey is going to throw the red flag on that 12 man play. Your administration have already counted it a moral victory against SU just because Buckey have decided to challenge the officials. Just face it.

Buckey's staying!

Why are y'all even still discussing, er rum, smacking on this isht anyway? Sperm, go sit cho ass down somewhere and STFU

The game is over, face it you lost......

Just letting the world know that yall had to cheat lil ole UAPB to win. The tape don't lie.

If you got to cheat to beat UAPB, then there is nothing you can do to be better teams.

Now, you STFU before you get SMACKED TFU!!!
