SU Signs Nation Top baseball player

Baton Rouge, LA -- Head baseball coach Roger Cador has announced the signing of two nationally regarded high school baseball players. Southern has signed outfielder Cameron Maybin of Arden, NC and Calvin Anderson of Kirkland, WA.

"Southern is very fortunate to win the signing sweepstakes for these young men. Maybin was chosen as Baseball America's High School Player of the Year at the MLB Winter Meetings over Justin Upton so this is a tremendous opportunity for Southern and my program" said Roger Cador. "We outdid a "Who's who" in college baseball to get this young man to sign. It is huge for our program coming off of having Rickie Weeks a couple of seasons ago (#2 overall selection in 2003 MLB Draft)."

If this guy doesn't like his position in the draft, watch out SWAC. He's only batting .833

I just read that on the front page.... MAJOR props to SU on this pick up... I hope he suits up in an SU uniform... the article said he may be the first of second HSer takin in the draft. He is almost batting .700 after 13 games this season.

Coach Cador is by far the best Coach on Southern's campus. He does more with less(budget) than any coach ever. Cador would be the perfect A.D. in my opinion.

Congrats SU.

Just like DAHILL said, the next monumental task is actually getting him suited up in a uniform.

Step one is completed, now you must seal the deal which is out of SU's hand but good luck with the both of them.

I'll say this....Cador has done the most with his resources and has took advantage of the situation around him the past few seasons in order to make SU what it is today. He took advantage of the Texas schools not pumping any cash into the program and he went in there and stole the best of the best black baseball talent for years. He's got the MLB's attention the past few years and has the numbers to prove it.

it also says that the quality of recruiting has picked up tremendously in the SWAC...Texas is basically locked down with PV and TSU so now he has to head across the country to get the signatures of players.

And I understand the move also....these kids probably won't step foot on campus but getting their signatures hopefully attracts the Tier 2 type of athlete that usually is drafted kinda high (teen rounds) but heads to the SEC, etc....

we had a conversation about this the other night on our radio show....how can black baseball schools go in and attract the best black talent but can't do it in other sports?

as for that kid's father going to PV..got to research that, must not be an alumnus because he wasn't in the alumni book...that was nice of Cador to sneak that line in...:lmao:

Cador for AD? you prefer internal moves?

We can attract black baseball talent because 9 times out of 10 they(big white schools) would rather give the free ride to a white kid.

Phenoms sign with Southern baseball

Cameron Maybin has never been to Southern University and he might never put on a Jaguars baseball uniform.
But his signature on a national letter of intent Wednesday says volumes about the reputation of the SU baseball program and the personality magnet that is SU coach Roger Cador.

Maybin, a center fielder from T.C. Roberson High in Arden, N.C., is considered by Baseball America as the second best prospect in the upcoming draft. Baseball America named Maybin its "Youth Player of the Year" in 2004.

Not to diminish the recruiting efforts of the Texas schools, but SU's last SWAC title team looked like this:

1B Kevin Vital (Louisiana)
2B Rickie Weeks (Florida)
SS Fernando Puebla (Venezuela)
3B Antoin Gray (Mississippi)
C Joey Mouton (Louisiana)
LF Andrew Toussaint (California)
CF Alfred Ard (Louisiana)
RF Marcus Townsend (Texas)

It sounds cool to say that the downfall of Southern baseball will be the improvement of the Texas schools, but Cador can find talent anywhere. 10 out of these 12 players was drafted and only ONE was from Texas.
BTW the weekend rotation consisted of:

Dewon Day (Mississippi)
Corey Poret (Louisiana)
Vince Davis (Illinois)
Johnathon Khon (Louisiana)

Closer Damian Ursin (Louisiana)

lets go back a few years....that was in 2003....what about Torik Harrison, Marcus Chandler, there was another hispanic from Houston and several more....those were the horses in the late 90s/2000s who provided the foundation.

obviously Louisiana isn't a baseball state with the lack of homegrown talent but I'm not going to argue because I look at our lineup and out of the 3 we had drafted last season, 2 were from out of state. However, this season, we have argubaly the strongest player in the SWAC but he hails from Massachutsetts and a freshman from Cali who was drafted by the Cubs...

but most of our pitching staff hails from Texas (SU wanted our top 2 staters desperately) and the base of our team is in Houston....(prime recruiting grounds)

Jonathan Kohn....he's still on the roster but that happened to him?

I now see the PV kid's father played football but he knew about SU during their glory years due to the recruiting trip....becaue if he did his homework now he would notice both programs are about equal in talent and getting kids noticed.

I got to give it to them.....they signed without looking at the campus...I know personally we picked up several kids who compared both campuses...makes me wonder if the PV kid ever looked at the campus or was going off his father's memory.

as for the scholarship situation...you only have 11.7 ships....ain't many getting full rides as it is....these kids would take up 2 full rides and leave SU with only 9.7 or less. In most cases, if they qualify for financial aid it's a partial but these kids might've signed a letter of intent but not a financial aid agreement (that lists actual dollar amount).

but for top black kids to keep choosing HBCUs for baseball says something about their confidence in the coaching staffs and success goes a long way. Honestly though, I don't think some schools even touch black players unless they're a certain mold...

we had a kid torch his hometown school for 7 RBIs and after the game the opposing coaching staff asks how come they never heard of the kid?

1 decent season doesn't make PV's program equal to Southern. lets be real.

"What have you done for me lately?" ever heard of that saying?

Obviously, you don't know about our program history...Tankersley had some competitive teams, NAIA honors and had players play in the pros but lets be honest, most of the X generation don't care about 30 years ago...if that was the case..every kid who sees Avery Johnson coach the Mavs would be running to SU if tradition played a big part.

The kid or whomever mentioned Rickie Weeks....that was only 2 years ago..I did not see him mention Lou Brock who whomever else...

let us pop a high draft pick....that's who we'll use to reel them in...the 3 we had drafted last year gave us the power to go in people's homes and get them to sign.
Kids want to hear about what happened yesterday...not 50 years ago...

if that was the case...PV football would've never suffered after 1964..

bandfand you already know this but over the last 3 years. Let me say it again over THE LAST 3 YEARS SU has had 24 players drafted more than any other school in the nation. Not just the swac but the nation.

you just answered my question about what have you done for me lately? my point exactly.....

who cares about Joe Pittman or whomever else in 1975?

my other point is that kids see success and they want to be apart of it.....Cador recruited some of the same kids we have and I know he probably threw tradition and the 24 draftees on them...but obviously kids look at other things during the process.

looking at your program, it has evened out now....

Southern could not win every single year. I don't call this evening out
. Southern has signed outfielder Cameron Maybin of Arden, NC and Calvin Anderson of Kirkland, WA.
Maybin (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) is hitting .692 with nine home runs and 16 stolen bases through 13 games at Roberson.

When PV signes kids of this caliber or has 24 players drafted over 3 seasons I will say it has even out. Know I give credit where credit is due, PV has done an outstanding job of getting competitive and the swac west is now longer a cake walk for Southern. But untill you win at least 1 championship you cannot be on the same level.

Great publicity pick-up SU. Even though this guy will probably never hit the campus, it's still great for the school. Signing the #1 player in the nation in any sport is a huge accomplishment for any HBCU.

I notice we(HBCUs) hardly ever publicize our baseball signees.

they do...but baseball is a different animal....most schools wait until the summer because some kids won't make college decisions until the draft is over. By then sometimes, football takes over and that's it.

here we go with this level thing Jag......I saw SU this year....the talent level looks to be about even...offensively, we're better...

it's what have you done for me lately

SU and this Notre Dame tradition......kids actually think of the 70s when they think of SU baseball

70's, 80's, 90's, 00's. Prolly could go further back. Does anyone even think of PV? If they do then what do they think about? 04???????

Solid, great job Southern University and Coach Cador!!

Bandfan you make some interesting points. Shaking My Head!! @ the inability of people to have a conversation on this board without feeling the need to put another institution down after five or six post on just about every subject posted on the sportsboard (There is a smackboard!!).

Why does "bandfan" always have to try and compare SU to PV in every post?
