SU band still influencing the band world

The Jukes drill great! I think they may be the best Step 2 drillers in the country. I have never liked the SOUND of the Jukes. For people who do like that type of sound, I have always purported that SU does what it does very well. As you know, my position is well-documented here on TSPN.

And we all know what's the most memorable song from that faithful night in 97...lol GSU playing "Call Tyrone".... I swear he felt like the entire DOME was BLOWING at us... I was like "Dayum this is what it feels like to get blown on by about 20 SU bands"....lol That was some scary isht... I thought the whole city of New Orleans turned on us that night...smh

The difference between yall's era and ours was the assistants. Knighten and Jackson handled Doc differently than their LB Roy Johnson did. Roy had his way with Doc for the most part. Even other band directors noticed it. I remember Dowell Taylor of JSU telling me that really Roy was running things behind the scenes at SU. All I could do is :lol: and :D. So alot of the time we had folks work on Roy.....normally the Frat. Then Roy pretty much had carte blanche to do what he wanted. He really had more power than yall's assistants. So did Terral Jackson Sr or Paul Adams before him.

Those 2 Sax players my LB is talking about is our frat bruhs Troy Raymond and the late Helmon Gordon. Both from New Orleans. They had Doc's ear(even sat right behind him on Bus 1 lol). No matter how much pressure they put on him to do something he wouldn't get mad enough to zip them. Don't know what happened later with yall, But Doc would just tell us he aint going to do it if he felt that strongly. Just tell us to go get our own band. So that part of him has never changed. Just how you handle him with your request. We noticed it was different after some of us were gone.

Normally we had enough folks to make Doc think our idea was his idea. LOL. Used his own psychology on him. :lol: Never send folks who he didn't care for or had issues with to talk to him about an idea. Always sent his favorites to do the lobbying for the rest of the band was our motto. 80% of the time it work. The other 20% is well you how he is......don't matter who talks to him at that point. The only thing we could not do is have a wild dance routine. That was never going to happened. Actually yall had more liberal dance routines than we did alot of the times. Our song selections for dance routine and creativity really got our house back in the day.

And you showed up to band camp with some glitter gloves when you got your letter in the mail from Lidell letting you know you needed gloves for the marching band...

You ain't find out how popular it was until you youTubed it maybe last year and saw a lot of people commenting on the video talking about their memories and you said to yourself "Dayum this isht was out before 94?!?!".... Now get your country arse out of here with all your frontin..

Trust me, I definitely understand what you are saying. Getting things through to Doc is a system of manipulation. You truly have to use him and his style against him. You have to drop seeds (ideas) and seek every opportunity to have the conversation come up again, so it appears you are just sharing a good idea with him. There are times he is literally seeking input. There is no better time than then. There are some alums, who he has built confidence in over the years, especially when they marched in the Juke, that he strongly considers their suggestions. You probably noticed some of those cats sitting in his office when you marched, even after you all were let go for the evening. All kinds of discussions were occurring (updates on his kids; which section seems to be kicking the most butt or showing the most improvement; memoriable stories from the past; hot songs and/or dances; students who could use a job over the summer; etc...). No, he didn't just do what the alums that he valued said, but it added weight to it, especially if some band members that are building that level of confidence with him and other valued alums also mention the same thing.

But hey, times changed, but Doc really didn't. The complexity to work through change and that isn't something to get into here. But, I'll assure you the adjustments that I'm aluding to with that comment wasn't in your favor to get some of those ideas in Doc's approval bucket.

We certainly aren't as far apart in our comments as it may appear.

All what you are saying is true and all.. but I will just have to say and know from my time there and talking to cats that marched with you, Doc changed once he took sick.. I did see a few cats here and there talking to Doc once practice let out.. I was one of the ferw upperclassmen that would go in and sit and talk with Doc, shat been to his house a few times... Goose was who Doc took most of his ideas from.. and like you said.. Goose would often make Doc believe it was his idea... So that to may have been working against us.. we actually had a force that but a damper on our ideas before or when it got to Doc... A lot more than you may think, but again like you say, that's not a topic for discussion on here....lol

I still remember our trumpet section in 99 practicing "Get it on" fanfare.. when I tell you that thing was SMOKIN' it was SMOKIN' Mr. J, Knighten and Doc was in awe at the sound we were putting out... but because of a future DM in that section that was a crab at the time was related to Goose and he thought somethign was happening to his nephew, the trumpet section could do no right that year ....and some kind of way mysteriously Doc started to believe that as well.... That ain't even the tip of it though....

If we would have been allowed to take that fanfare out in 99, folks would still be talking about that edition playing that fanfare... Your LB and other folks that marched with you even comment a lot on our trumpet section 99 from the footage we watched... Most none juke (with out a good sense of band knowledge)only notice the monster lower brass....But all of them from the 80's would be like.. "YOu hear them dayum trumpets!!!"....lol
