SU adds Alcorn as 12th game

Southern has finalized its 2002 Football schedule with the addition of Alcorn State as its 12th game. Alcorn will also roll on to SU's SWAC schedule next year and will therefore visit Baton Rouge for two consecutive years. I am glad to see Alcorn back on SU's schedule.
 
Hey Corn,

I hope SU is really, really, really paying you a lot of money to make this trip to Baton Rouge since you have to go there again next year.

I understand that this is probably a better move for you than to make that trip to California, but I really hope SU is making it worth your while.
 



"L" yeah!! It's about time!! I really don't care about who is going where as long as we play SU again. The Highway 61 rivalary has returned!!!

SU's schedule is looking pretty good!!!!

I can't wait.....looking forward to playing Alcorn. I've really missed playing you guys, I must say. Hope to meet some of you Alcornites at the game. :D

But hey, you can't blame SU. Some schools just want to be used.
 
I think its a good move on Alcorns part. Why go all the way to Cali to play for 3K people, when you can drive 1.5hours to play a real football game. Kudos on Alcorn. Good Job.

I agree! I just hope they didn't get pimped.
 
It never did make sense to me why the two stop playing each other in the first place.Why play Cal Poly or Benedict when you have born rivalry.
 
How will this Alcorn/Southern game count in the SWAC race?

I ask because both Southern and Alcorn have presumably filled out their schedules with the SWAC divisional teams (in their respective divisions) and the SWAC teams from the other division that count towards the overall SWAC crown. I also assume that this game was one of those "rotational" games that otherwise would have been skipped in '02 if not for Alcorn's backing out on Cal-SLO.

In essence, this takes the place of a non-conf game, but for either team IF IT DOES count as a SWAC contest towards the SWAC title (win or lose), these 2 teams get an extra game that the rest of the teams does not have.

How is that going to play out or is this going to be a rare case where 2 conf. teams meet and it doesn't count towards the title?:confused:

This game does not count in conference standings... It's a non-conference game this year
 



This was best move the SU A.D. (uhh...administration) has made in a long time. A natural rivalry and we don't have to go to Spinks.

This will an excellent game with a real football atmosphere.

A very much improved Brave squad that can't sneak up on us this year.

So if they would have said come to MUDford for 3 years in a row, that would be okay just as long as you play su. Have you any dignity. Alcorn gains nothing from getting PIMPED.

Alcorn State Opts Out of Cal Poly State Football Game
University Adds Southern University to Schedule
June 20, 2002
ALCORN STATE, Miss. ? Due to ongoing budget cuts, Alcorn State University was faced with the tough decision to "stream-line" its 2002 athletic budget by opting out of the November 2nd game with Cal Poly State.

"While we regret the inconvenience it has caused to both schools, the trip to San Luis Obispo, California is just not economically feasible at this time," state Alcorn State's director of athletics Robert Raines.
"Fortunately, Southern University which is less than 120 miles away, stepped in and offered to pick us up for their twelfth game."

The team will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to renew their rivalry at A.W. Mumford Stadium on November 2, 2002. "We are hoping that with the realignment of conference football schedules, this will keep the long standing rivalry in tact," stated Raines.

If the trip is really, truly not "economically feasible", then I guess this switch is cool or whatever. But I kinda doubt it's really about not having money to go out there. We've got what, 8 road games, this year anyway. Cal Poly came to Alcorn last year, and I think we should have returned the favor. Cal Poly isn't exactly Notre Dame or Nebraska or Florida - it probably wasn't "economically feasible" for them to travel to Mississippi, either, but they came.

I'm not gonna front, because I am glad we're not going to go two seasons without Southern on the schedule. But still....

What is gained by this? I would understand if they (su)were doing a home and home and Alcorn would be reaping the benefits. Two years in a row....

Alcorn State and Southern are two close to not play anyway. So, it makes perfect sense for the schools to play, regardless to how it went down. It seems like a couple of you are kinda mad that the schools are playing, and you're worrying about the wrong things. Forget about who's going to who... We are playing now, and that's just it. Just get your tickets and get there for yourselves. That's all it takes.

Don't worry, be happy...

Too close. If su was so interested in playing you why, when it was their turn to invite you to MUDford in 2001, they decided not to. Man ain't nobody mad cause ya'll playing su. We just hate to see someone get PIMPED. THEY COULD AT LEAST CHIPPED IN ON YOUR GAS. You could have scheduled a game with Delta State at home... Has Bristow and Casem gone mad???
