Tennessee Man Arrested After Defending Himself Against Armed Car Thieves

A Tennessee man was arrested and charged with felony reckless endangerment after he returned fire at armed thieves who were attempting to steal a van outside his home.

Around 2 a.m. on Saturday, a Shelby County man’s surveillance system notified him that several burglars were using tools to break into a van near his property, Fox 13 Memphis reported. The man exited his house and stood beneath the porch light of his home as the thieves fired multiple shots at him. Security video footage shows the homeowner returning fire, exchanging bullets with the suspects several times.

Fending off the would-be burglars, they fled the scene but when police arrived, deputies interrogated the homeowner, according to his wife.

“When they were talking to him, from what I saw, it was like they were trying to find ways to charge him,” the homeowner’s wife told Fox 13 Memphis. “That doesn’t sound right. Why would you put pressure on the victim when you should put pressure for the suspects to be found.”

According to the officers, the homeowner admitted he was frightened so he could not clearly see his target as he attempted to fire at the suspects with his eyes closed.
