Spring time at JSU

60+ returning players is a new coaches dream. That is an impressive number. JSU had plenty of young talent on the 13 roster, they should be pretty tough again this season.

Spring game is coming up so I just posted this.

New Jackson State coaches want to see who playmakers are.......Clarion Ledger
While the football players practice on the field, the coaches will practice names.

Jackson State begins spring practice today, with more than 60 players expected to return from the 2013 roster. First-year coach Harold Jackson, who’s three months into the job, and the six new members of his coaching staff get to work with the players on the field for the first time.

“Just like how I told them, every position on this football team is wide open because I don’t know nobody’s names,” Jackson said. “That’s how I’m going to learn your name: Once you go out there and show me that you can play at that position.”

With that, here are some storylines to follow during spring practice:

sounds like a fun spring camp to follow, should be interesting :read:

New Jackson State coaches pleased with first practice.......Clarion Ledger READ / Video

In the first day of fall camp last season, the Jackson State football players didn’t have practice uniforms.

Instead, they had to write their numbers on masking tape and put it on their helmets.

Things were different this time around.

On Tuesday, the first day of spring practice, the Tigers donned new blue-and-white practice jerseys. It’s just one of the changes that has come along with the recent facelift for the football program that’s looking for a trip back to the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

Notes from Day 1 of spring practice .................. Clarion Ledger READ
Spring practice began this morning, and it was a new experience for both players and coaching staff— or rather, all parties involved.

Everyone seems to be getting their feet wet with the recent changes, and with this being the first day, there are a few noticeable differences compared to 2013.
•Also read today’s Clarion-Ledger spring practice preview.

1. New practice jerseys: Last season, in the first week of fall camp, players had to write their numbers on masking tape and place it on their helmets, which eventually became useless in trying to identify who was who. Today, masking tape was unnecessary. Players donned fresh, silky, blue and white jerseys. A new look to kick off a new era. Not bad.

2. Organization: Practice started and ended on time, something that was inconsistent last season. But at first, that didn’t seem the case.

I had arrived at the football practice field at 5:50 a.m., and watched participants in a Fit4Change program jog laps around the track. Although very inspiring, I wondered if practice was pushed back or canceled, but later learned the team was at the soccer field. So I headed over and caught the last hour. I was told the team had stepped on the field at 5:45 a.m., not 6. Will this timeliness stay consistent in the next four weeks? We’ll see.

Now, a neat feature about the soccer field is the width and how that allowed for the offense, defense and special teams to accomplish more efficiently. There was also an air horn used to break up sessions, another new tactic introduced. These are all minor yet significant details that play can factor in the organization and fluidity of practices.

Let’s transition and take a quick look at the football team:

You're right. I forgot about all those NFL prospects.
I knew there would be one anti-JSU troll when I posted this.

But oh well.
Name 1 prospect you got off whatever scrub team you rep.

I can name 2 off JSU's 2013 squad.

Both are potential first rounders. I love the JSU fan base.
