1. WHAT WE LEARNED

Other teams in the SWAC are not going to beat Southern unless they score an awful lot of points. The Jaguars followed consecutive 50-point games against conference opponents with a 45-point output against one of the better defenses in the league. The Jaguars had just 59 rushing yards, but it didn’t matter because Austin Howard had a career-high 33 completions, passed for 355 yards and threw four touchdown passes. The Jaguars can be beaten, but it’ll have to happen in a shootout.

2. TRENDING NOW

The tight ends. It’s easy to forget about the Southern tight ends because the team has so many more explosive weapons on offense. But opponenets who forget about them can pay a price just as the Hornets did. Dillon Beard had four catches for 47 yards and two TDs and Montrell Jones had five catches for 67 yards and a TD. Bradley Coleman, who’s basically a tight end off the line, chipped in three catches for 29 yards. Beard and Jones’ early success seemed to open up lanes for wideout Willie Quinn, who had a career-high 12 catches.

3. FINAL THOUGHTS

Even though Southern led by at least two touchdowns for virtually three-quarters of the game, coach Dawson Odums and his staff have plenty to harp on in practice this week. The defense got sloppy late when some starters rested; a fumble set up a late ASU touchdown; and the Jaguars were penalized 14 times. If Southern takes its foot off the gas or continues with self-inflicted problems, a better opponent — such as Prairie View next Saturday — can make them pay for it.

Only Alcorn and Grambling have the talent and personnel to beat Southern. I really don't think much of Southern's coaching staff, but they are fierce recruiters that find ways to land talent in key places. As of right now, I see Southern beating Grambling, and losing to Alcorn. Grambling's defense is suspect and their DC seems to not really know the game as well as a DC should. The Tigers offense is good, but they score many points off blown defense plays.

Alcorn has the size and speed to slug it out with the Jags, but most importantly, they have a better coaching staff. Odums just makes too many bone headed decisions and loves to find ways to kill the Jags momentum when his teams are in a groove. I don't see the Braves allowing SU to jump out on them like they do everyone. The game will be won on the headsets, and Hopson is a better coach than Odums.

We shall see how this turns out.

Maybe its me,, but I am.starting to notice a bad trend with SU,, and if the coaching staff dont fix it NOW its going to catch up with them, .... games from even last season including the bayou classic, We had GSU beat, but we keep.on letting teams back in the game, and I see we haven't learned, WHEN you are up, STAY up, this game shouldn't have been this close period END OF STORY..

Man Alcorn folk come get you ppl

He ain't ours know one knows him and we sure as hell don't claim him!!!!!!!!!!!!

That wasn't Menard who fumbled lol. It was the tight end #88. Menard drop the pass because he tried to one hand catch the pass like Odell Becham lol.
Man, what was he thinking? He was wide open in the end zone but he made a half arse attempt to one hand what should have been a simple catch and TD.
Interesting game
Quinn has some moves.
With Southern stuffing the run, Duhart should've been brought in sooner

A lazy defense is not a good defense. Plus, the secondary constantly let's WRs get behind them. And the RB is wide open on the drop down by 10 yards.

Most of all, why does the defense seem to give up a TD on opponents 1st drive of the 2nd half????
I am going to disagree. We got lazy on D in the 2nd half. First half, the score should have been out of reach. Our D kept them off the board.

You're entitled to your opinion no matter how much you want to ignore your own school's putrid defense and sub par team.
You brought up JSU as smack, so when someone else blasts your school's putrid coaching and defense, don't say you didn't deserve it.
