Southern head coach Grant hires assistants, signs 7-footer

New Southern University head men's basketball coach Michael Grant has named Derek Thompson and Elwyn McRoy Jr. to his coaching staff for the 2003-04 season.
Thompson had been the head coach at Morris Brown College since February 2001. Before that, he was an assistant at the school since 1997.
Southern beat Morris Brown 77-49 last season.
A native of Decatur, Ga., Thompson earned his bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation from Morris Brown.
While a player, Thompson was a dean's list student-athlete, who scored more than 1,000 points in his playing career. He was also selected to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities All-Star Team.
McRoy comes to Southern after spending last season as the coach of Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas.
Since his graduation in 1997 from Cleveland State University, McRoy has had stints as an assistant coach at Butler Community College in Eldorado, Kan.; at Independence Community College in Independence, Kan.; and Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla.
He earned his associates degree from Hutchinson Community College and his bachelor's degree in social work from Cleveland State University.
While at Hutchinson, McRoy was a standout point guard who led his team to the NJCAA Men's Division II Championship.
McRoy later played for Grant (then an assistant) at Cleveland State. He earned numerous awards and was co-captain of the 1996-97 team.

Domonic Prince, 7-foot, 185-pounder, averaged five points, six rebounds and two blocks for Cerritos (Calif.) Community College.
A native of Inglewood, Calif., Prince played at Junipera Serra High School in Inglewood, where he averaged eight points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks per game.
Prince is the second signee for Grant.
Grant earlier signed Brandon Wardlow, a 6-foot guard from St. Catharine, a junior college in Kentucky.
"He (Prince) is at a point where he has good hands and footwork," Grant said.
"He has a wingspan of about 7-6, and with that alone, we should be able to get him to change the complexity of the game inside with shot blocking and rebounding and just changing shots altogether.
"He has to be willing to work hard and pick up this weight and work hard in the weight room."
