Southern Cal or Notre Dame?

um...leave the smack references over there on the smack board. and how bout this...what will happen once LC and Johnny Cole's players all finish their eligibility :topic:

That wasn't smack, it was intended to make my point. The point was that Southern probably has much better talent than A&M - especially on offense - but A&M obviously had a good gameplan . . . and the rest is history.

As for Bama State after LC and Johnny's talent is gone, we'll still be fine as long as we have LC's coaching staff (and we still do) and LC's playbook (and we still do). It's not just the talent LC left here that is making the difference (although that's important, and I never said it wasn't) its also the schemes - and the coaching staff to implement them. LC left that here too.

the playbook...sound like the waterboy when the coach took Fonz's book...

I chose Southern Cal because I read somewhere that they are 3 deep in their roster with the top 15% of the nations "Blue Chipper athletes". They have to much foot speed at every position. Before the Arkansas game, people here were talking about an upset, I told them USC will score 70 points. You can't coach speed. I have seen 4.2,4.3 Blue Chipper speed against mediocre teams. The only weakness Southern Cal has is that they are not in the NFL.But you know, on any given Saturday or Sunday any team that seems invincible can be beaten.

Hey J, I understand what you're saying about talent, but if you have a solid gameplan, and play solid defense, anything can happen. I'll admit, on paper Notre Dame doesn't have the horses to run in a race with USC, but they have an older team now, that's playing with confidence, and a solid coaching staff. Also, USC hasn't been that impressive in the last few weeks, and actually they've had to come back in the last 2.

Good gameplans vs. great talent in college football:

Michigan vs. Notre Dame
Oklahoma vs. TCU
Pitt vs. Ohio (thanks Gram4Life)
UCLA vs. Arizona State

USC is playing another game on the road without any breaks in their season, playing against a rested Irish team. The smart money is on USC, but Notre Dame wasn't supposed to beat Tennessee, or Michigan last year, and stranger things have happened under the Golden Dome.

Again, I'm no Irish fan, and I didn't like how things went down when they hired Willingham, and when they fired him, but there's something about that place......something else to watch Saturday. Pete Carroll was asked if he wanted the use of Instant Replay this weekend, and he declined :shame: if the game was in LA by all means decline, but we all know how the Irish get funny calls in big games at home.....just something to ponder.

NICE

pbla, Miami thought that same thing when they played Ohio State.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what I've been trying to tell these folks...USC got 3rd string dudes better than ND starters..and yes...John David Booty (the new Louisiana Cannon QB-watch next year) is better than Brady Quinn...

So PBLA...answer this... why people think ND has a chance when an SEC team got peterrolled by USC like it wasn't nothin? Why people think ND got a chance when better teams had USC down by two or more TDs in their own stadiums...only to get whupped?

Um..DNICE..

1. Michigan is down this year and their RB Hart wasn't playing against ND
2. TCU is a lot better than advertised and Oklahoma is vastly overrated (Peterson got hurt early that game) and STILL hasn't woke up from gettin' kicked to never-neverland by USC
3. Pitt was trash right after that QB and Larry Fitzgerald left
4. UCLA is a lot better than advertised (I pull for the black coaches) and Arizona State has choked twice this season (USC and LSU)

This is Notre Dame's biggest game since the Orange Bowl, when they got kicked to sleep by Chad Johnson, T.J. Housmenzadah and the rest of that outlaw Oregon State team. USC is a veteran team, they won't get rattled. Question is, will ND succumb to being under the big lights.

J, I don't dispute that Michigan is down this year, but when they played, ND was the heavy underdog, and it was ND who exposed them. Down, or not, Oklahoma has waaaay more talent than TCU, and shouldn't have lost to them, and Pitt was ranked in the top 20 this year, and like Michigan, they were exposed by ND.

For the record, I didn't feel ND deserved to be in the Orange Bowl against OSU, but if you look at it, this ND team is pretty much the same type of team that played in that Orange Bowl, they overachieved, and beat good Nebraska, and Michigan teams, along with a few others on their way to that Orange Bowl.

All I'm saying is, anything can happen, and if ND were to win this game, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

I agree with you here Journ. None of those were cases of teams having the talent advantage that USC has over ND losing due to gameplanning (and the Michigan game was moreso a case of Michigan having a terrible gameplan than ND having a good one). ND struggled to slow down Michigan State's offense, and MSU doesn't have the horses that USC will bring to South Bend.

:topic:

It was the Fiesta Bowl that Oregon State beat the brakes off of Notre Dame, not the Orange Bowl.

You're right JagNation..it was the Fiesta Bowl...the Orange Bowl was that close game against Colorado back in the gap...

TCU damn near made the BCS two seasons ago and they did produce the best RB in the NFL..so it's not like TCU beatin Oklahoma's like UL-Lafayette beating Miami or something.

Michigan State ran up and down the field with ND and the Irish couldn't stop them...so what they gon' do with the President, Lendale White, Leinart and all them boys ... and USC's defense isn't as good as it was 2 years ago, but it's still good enough to hold ND in check...

Somebody said Miami/Ohio State a couple years ago. Ohio State had just as many athletes and head cases as Miami did...talent was evenly matched.

Now gameplanning would be K-State kicking Oklahoma to sleep in the Big 12 title game that year they came down here and lost to LSU.

AMEN....These boys are all players Willingham recruited to ND...

And y'all forgetting ND got peterrolled by USC last year with the same players...

Remember, this is college football, where talent has more to do with success than coaching in most cases...(see: University of Texas and Mack Brown)

USC is tired of hearing how Charlie Weis got Notre Dame "back."...Notre Dame schedule has been so-so..with a down Michigan and an underacheiving Purdue... and Washington (Neuheisel left the cupboard bare at UW, just like he did at Colorado). USC will be the first real test to see how good ND really is..

Besides, we all know no lead is safe with the Trojans in the game...and ND does not have the firepower Arizona State or Oregon has...ND would get kicked to sleep by either of those two teams..

Trust me folks, Pete Carroll 'nem live for games like this one in ND...it won't be pretty, just like when the Trojans mollywhopped Oklahoma into oblivion in the title game last year...

45-22 Trojans!!!

Notre Dame only because of Willingham's recruiting classes

you're right...who would've known how good ND would've been this year if Willingham was coaching them. Only reason Willingham's not doing good in Washington is that Neuheisel didn't leave him with much, just like a lot of football writers said he did when he left Colorado for U-Dub.

The Trojans also realize their reputation doesn?t mean much when they take the field.

Bulee me, dem USC boys is ready for ND

J, TCU almost made the BCS 2 years ago, because they didn't play anybody. Come on man they play in C-USA, and they lost to a decent but not great Southern Miss team, and the second they lost that one game, they went from a BCS game to the Liberty Bowl, and ended up losing that game (I think).

I can agree on LT being the best back in the league, but how many other TCU players are considered among the best in the league? Hell how many TCU players get drafted every year? They have nowhere near the talent that OU has, it's not even close. LT, is just a example of a great player coming out of a so-so program. Truth be told, if LT was at OU his senior year, instead of TCU, he would've won the Heisman.

TCU is not even a top 25 program year in year out. TCU beating Oklahoma is exactly like UL-Lafayette beating Miami, because it's not supposed to happen. That game didn't make a blip on the radar until TCU won, had OU won, nobody would've mentioned that game.

Hey dawg, I like USC, offensively they're a beast, but their defense is suspect, and Notre Dame can score. I keep hearing Michigan State being mentioned, they're not the offenive juggernaut USC is, but they're one of the better offensive teams in the nation this year, look at their scores, and it's not like they blew ND out, if I remember that game went into overtime, or they won on a last second touchdown.

Don't be fooled, they're not number 9 midway through the season for nothing. This team can play.

TCU would have likely made the top 25 this year. They beat Oklahoma, and Utah, but then turns around and loses to SMU. Go figure.

OH BTW - Give me USC.

I have sense that the aura and tradition of the Irish will find a way to pull this one out (even though SC has by far the better talent). The Irish dominate the series all time. ND damn near had all the former Irish greats at the 40,000 person pep rally. Th adrenaline of playing for program as big as Yanks does put some pep in your step. This will be classic battle between two Roman Catholic universities.

However, I still got to go with Hector and dem Trojans off Figueroa and Jefferson in SC! Fight on!

Are you sure USC is a Catholic School??? I always thought USC was historically affiliated with the Methodist Church.

Cat, you are right -- SC was founded as Methodist. I always thought the inital linking of SC and ND was due to both being Catholic schools.

Michigan State was up 38-17 in that game before coming off the pedal too soon, allowing Notre Dame to come back, MSU went on to win in overtime. When MSU was aggressive on offense, they moved the ball and scored pretty much at will. USC's defense has holes, but ND's defense has just as many.

As far as being ranked #9, ND has improved, but they aren't the 9th best team in the country. I could think of at least 5 teams in the SEC alone that are better than Notre Dame.
