Sony to slash price on PS3

Running and Gunning
SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- Sony has cut the price of the PlayStation 3 by $100, or 17 percent, in the United States, a move that should boost the video game console's lackluster sales.

Starting Monday, the current PS3 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 -- a $100 price drop.

The PlayStation 3, which includes a 60-gigabyte hard drive and a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player, will now cost $500, or $20 more than the most expensive version of Microsoft's Xbox 360.

The PS3 still costs twice that of Nintendo's Wii console, whose $250 price and motion-sensing controller have made it a best-seller despite its lack of cutting-edge graphics and hard disk.

"Our initial expectation is that sales should double at a minimum," Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in an interview.

"We've gotten our production issues behind us on the PlayStation 3, reaching a position to pass on the savings to consumers, and our attitude is the sooner the better."

The price drop Monday was widely anticipated by industry analysts despite Sony President Ryoji Chubachi telling Reuters last week that the company had no immediate plans for one.

Wow! I didn't expect this for another year. I still want my PSP and 360.

Xbox 360 is kickin their arse in sales, that's all that means, and they overestimated how much folks would be willing to pay for a PS3.

PS3 was way overpriced in the U.S. for a "dumbded down" version of what other countries got at the same time.
Now they kicking the memory from 60 to 80 in the U.S. to match what people in Korea, etc, bought from day #1.

The X-Box is going in for a 1 billion dollar fix of their hard-drives.
They announced that last week.
When the hard drive light turns red and stay's, it's over.
Call MicroSoft.
X-Box Billion fix for Hard Drives.

That Wii is killing all their profits.

Both the X-Box and the PS3 was way overpriced to begin with.
WII killed both with their "hands on interactive play" concept that forces you to do more than sit on your arse.

With people wanting kids to at least move around instead of sitting around punching buttons, PS3 and X-BOX better jump on this NOW or they will start losing market share BIGTIME.

Face to Face "Blue Screen, 3-D Goggles" technology is next.
That will have people totally involved with these new WII hand controllers.

2 years.......................:D

I think I will sell all my Microsoft stock and invest in this. :D

What is WII's stock symbol?

Yes...I been waiting on this. I'll get my PS3 soon now.

LOL at a grown man playing with his Wii.

PS3 is the wave of the future. Sony isnt hurting because they are still selling PS2 games, and Blu-Ray is crushing HDDVD largely because of PS3 sales.

LOL @ 360... First you see the ring, then it dies!

WII is clocking PS3 and X-Box 360 in sales.
The only problem WII is having is that they can't keep up with demand for them.
Even with this problem, PS3 and X-Box 360 sales don't even come close.

They are both overpriced and the only advantage they have RIGHT NOW is that WII has just started getting game's made and MODIFIED for their console's from the game makers.

EA SPORTS has already announced that they are producing versions of Madden Football, Basketball, etc., for WII.
Example...........Throwing a pass will be done by just flicking your wrist with the controller.

EA Sports modifies control's for WII game Console.

In the main game of Madden NFL 08, NBA LIVE 08 and FIFA 08, players have the choice to play the style that best suits their skills. When entering a contest, players now have the option to choose Advanced or Family Play. Once in the game, Advanced users take complete control of all aspects of the gameplay through intuitive Wii gestures using both the Nunchuk and Wii remote. EA SPORTS Family Play offers a simplified control system using just the Wii remote that enables novice players to focus on having fun while the console does the rest. With the Wii remote in hand, players control key actions? such as shooting, passing, snapping, and throwing? while the console controls the rest. It?s like having an invisible helper on your team. Plus, as novice players gain confidence in their ability they can gradually begin to use Advanced controls simply by plugging in the Nunchuk. It?s that easy.

Yes the Wii is great for senior citizens and tweens. A real gamer or anyone who knows anything about electronics and stays up to date is going to get a 360 or a PS3.
I couldnt get a Wii because it A. Doesnt have HD output, B. Doesnt have intrenal memory, and C. has about 25% of the processing power of a 360 or a PS3.

Man.................We all know about Gamming and Electronics.
I have been working in the IT field for 20 years.

Virtual Reality is the future for GAMMING.
WII just got the jump on the others by introducing this technology NOW.
I'll gurantee you that the next generation WII will have the same power if not more than the X-Box 360 and the PS3.

Look past TODAY man.
By your own admission...................TWEEN's ARE THE FUTURE.
You honestly think they are going to want to sit on thier arses and play games when they are using this technology now.
If anything, they are going to want more of this as they get older.

LOL why would anyone buy a next gen setup with last gen hardware? Its like putting a gokart motor in a Corvette. No one here is talking about the Wii 2 or whatever comes out next, but lets just say that Nintendo is about 7 or 8 years behind. If im looking past today, is Nintendo going to be able to keep up when the more complex games come out?

If you know so much IT, tell me how the nintendo graphics and processing power stack up against the other systems. Can I play my HDDVDs or BluRay discs? I generally dont play mario party, so the Graphics matter to me.

Whatever dude.

The last statement of yours that I put in bold and red told me you can't even comprehend what was typed in the previous post.:read:
That shat was already answered BEFORE you asked the question that I knew was comming from you.

You just typing to be typing.
Again............Open your mind and think past the end of your nose.
Computer technology and software is OLD after 6 months...............Yesterday's news.

Stick to what you know.................. LAW.
Have fun. :wavey:

I have a 9 year old son and daughter and they don't want no parts of the PS3 or XBox 360. The Wii has the games that cater to their age group. More mature gamers (18+) would probably want the PS3 or XBox360.

That's what I have been hearing. Older folks like PS3 and 360, while the kids love Wii.

That's what I have been trying to tell J-State Tiger.
There is no telling what WII will have to offer in terms of power and other advancements next year alone.
People went from Atari, to NINTINDO, to DREAMCAST, to PS and X-BOX and now NINTINDO is back with a vengence with WII.

WII was a new product that had to be tested among the masses first.
Now that WII has been proven to be a top seller, they will juice that baby up to really take PS3 and X-Box360 on their turf.............Gamming, Graphics, etc.

Older people that play PS3 and X-Box 360 are no different than people that use PC -vs-MAC.
Serious PC users won't touch a MAC and vice verse.
Same with PS3 and X-BOX users that are set in their ways.

Sony pulled an okie doke with this so called price drop. Yeah, they dropped the price on the 60 gig version by $100 to $499, then they're gonna discontinue it and replace it with an 80 gig version for $599. Simply put, they're just giving people 20 gigs more on the hard drive.

Yep.......it's official....

Sony Corp. (6758.T) plans to phase out the cut-priced $499 model of its PlayStation 3 video game machine, leaving only a higher capacity $599 model for sale in the United States, the company said on Monday.

The revelation undid some of the praise Sony won from the gaming industry last week for its 17 percent price cut on the machine, a move seen as leveling the playing field with Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Xbox 360 console.

But one analyst said Sony had left the door open to further price cuts, saying another would almost certainly happen when the cheaper PlayStation 3 sells out.

Sony dropped the price on the PS3, which comes with a 60-gigabyte hard drive and high-definition Blu-ray DVD player, by $100 last week in a bid to boost sales of the console by passing on lower costs onto consumers.

It also said it would launch a new model featuring a hard drive with 33 percent more capacity -- 80 gigabytes -- and a copy of its off-road racing game "MotorStorm" in August.

A company spokesman said Sony would sell the $500 version until "supplies of that unit are depleted," estimated to be months after the August debut of the new, pricier model.

"We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come," Dave Karraker said in an e-mailed response to questions.

"We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated," Karraker said.

The statement confirmed remarks by David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, carried last week on gaming news Web site GamesIndustry.biz saying the 60-gigabyte model would be discontinued.

Gaming circles voiced disappointment in the development with popular blog Joystiq.com saying it amounted to more of a "clearance sale" than an actual price cut.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said in a research note that Sony had an estimated 2 million to 3 million 60-gigabyte models in inventory and that once they were sold out, it would lower the price on the 80-gigabyte version.

"Although we think that Sony's public relations gaffe was unfortunate, we do not believe that the company has ill intent, and we expect the $499 price point to be maintained until early next year, when the 80GB model will likely by cut again to $399," Pachter said.

Story

Maybe somebody can explain this to me... why do we need 80 gigs of hard drive space? How does the unit utilize this space?

Did ya'll also know that everyone except buyers in the U.S. got the 80 gig version from day 1.
Sony playing the biggest market they got like a gameboy.

This is why I get my stuff from the neighborhood shopping network. Why should I let big companies hustle me, when Lenny who has plenty will hook me up for the low low.
