Some historically black colleges see declining enrollment

RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- When Jessica Page visited Hampton University in March, she considered the trip a formality. She had already made up her mind to attend the school, considered by many a jewel among the nation's historically black institutions.

Then she saw the campus.

The dorms weren't as sleek as she had pictured. Buildings seemed antiquated. Was this "The Real HU" she had heard about?

"I wasn't impressed," said Page, who later enrolled at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. "Hampton was my No. 1 choice -- until I visited."

Page is part of a steady trickle of talented young blacks slipping away from the nation's most prestigious black colleges.

Experts say aging campuses are one reason. But other reasons cited include increasing competition from predominantly white schools that are trying to become more diverse; changes in black students' desires; and the greater opportunities available to them in a society more integrated than that of their parents.

The exodus has left some black schools struggling to market themselves to youngsters who do not feel as duty-bound to attend black colleges as their parents did........

This doesn't surprise me, one iota...when you have black parents and black people in general downing & bad talking our institutions, on a daily basis, why would a black student choose an HBCU?

I hope and pray it gets better, but w/this slave mentality that we blacks have, I doubt it. We STILL believe white is better! :(

Not only that but when have our institutions in the newspapers bickering every week over nonsense it's really not good.

If she says that about Hampton, I would HATE to see what she would say about other HBCU's...

Hampton is by far the most beautiful HBCU I have ever seen... and I have seen MANY...

MESSAGE! :read:

It's an uphill battle to get our young people to at least take a look our schools. My cousin was dead set on attending Auburn or Alabama for engineering, but when they didn't come up with any money, he finally looked at Tuskegee. His whole time at Tuskegee, I think he was wishing he was at Auburn. Even with having 3 job offers when he graduated. Granted Tuskegee has to do some things to make itself competitive like maintaining existing facilities and in some cases upgrading equipment and facilities.

So true.
One my co-workers at my part-time (black girl currently attending a white university) mentioned something last week about having a better chance of getting a good job by staying at a white university. I couldn't do nothing but :smh: Didn't have time to share my thoughts, because I was off the clock and ready to go.

This has been going on for at least 25-30 years.

I have never been to Hampton but thought of the same thing when I thought of other HBCUs.

Hampton is a beautiful campus, and there are others.

Our kids these days are falling into the same trap that our athletes fall into; they look at the amenities (facilities and other niceties) and fail to see the overall picture. There is more to getting a quality education than "things." Schools spend a lot of time and money on recruiting and they know what "material trappings" turn on the kids of today. With the cost of college educations these days, they have to pull them in: a lot of the trappings are done just to achieve that.

We have to educate our children with respect to what true quality in education is. I'm not saying that all of our children should automatically go HBCU, but they should have the chance to make an informed decision and that's not happening in all cases. Our parents need to wake up: if it was all about large PWC's and the amenities that they have, then even the small PWC's would cease to exist. That hasn't happened and that should tell our folks something.

Regards.

Yes, Hampton really is the most beautiful campus of the HBCUs. I have seen it as well.

Dr Mac, I agree with you wholeheartedly!

I somewhat disagree... when comparing HBCU's we often use facilities, buildings as a factor...why should things change when white colleges come into the picture.

You get out of college what you put into it.... doesnt matter if you are at a PWC or a HBCU. If you dont go to class you will flunk at an HBCU just like you will at a PWC. A misconception that ALOT of people on here seem to fall into is that professors at a HBCU "care" for you more than at a PWC. EVERYTHING THATS BLACK AINT RIGHT... Just because more of them are Black doesnt mean they will "care" for you.... at HBCUs there are ALOT of teachers who are foreigners also and you cant understand a word they are saying "especially in science and math classes. I went to a 98% Black high school with 50% Black... 50% White teachers, and I will easily let you know... All Black teachers DONT care about you. The white teachers/counselors were the ones helping us find scholarships and get us into college.

no for academics... we didnt have any white athletic coaches and IF it was for athletics...whats the problem?

Some of you are so close minded..... always talking about "my baby will only attend a HBCU"... when you wont even send your kids to the local BLACK high school because you feel "they can get a better education in the white school"... that pisses me the hell off. Then get a lil bit of money... leave YOUR community and think "youve arrived" when you move to the white folks neighborhood... but then come on here preaching "HBCU or nothing".

Our schools have to also keep in mind that we must do things to make our kids want to go there as well. We cannot live off of our name and former alumni. This is a new age and progressive forward thinking will keep the numbers up.

Exactly! I was about to make this very point. Why bother to invite a potental student to your campus if you have nothing to show for the visit? Let's be real for a moment, a person can get a so called "quality" education from ANY school in the country. But its the little things such as amenites that will prove to be the deciding factor as to where a person will attend school...and I can't say that I blame them. If a person is going to committ the next 4-5 years of his/her life to a school (especially if that person is leaving home) amenities or the "nice stuff" on campus is a huge factor.
