Solutions to improving HBCU football long term

8-3 (yet unranked) SCSU left out of the FCS playoffs.
Undefeated Bowie State losing in the 1st round of the D2 playoffs.
9-2 Miles losing in the 1st round of the D2 playoffs.
SWAC has only 1 win the Celebration Bowl

What are some solutions to this?

Gotta get coaches and fans who want to win more than the conference. The way you recruit and coach says a lot about your goals.

Some folks dogged out Broadway but his style would win on any level. Get him the athletes and opportunity and he would win.
 



Bowie lost to yearly power Carson Newmon by 8 points I believe so that ain't a bad loss. They won a playoff game last year so they definitely are knocking at the door of a deep D2 playoff run

As far as SCSU is concerned, this is probably the best argument for those who don't have a problem with Alcorn's scheduling. SCSU BEAT Wofford but Wofford is in over them due to the biased FCS playoff selection once again screwing the MEAC.

How many 3 loss FCS teams that made the playoffs played an SIAC bottom feeder?
 
Let’s start trying in our FCS games against teams that we have no business losing too ...

Let’s put emphasis on recruiting in our o and d lines because that would help a lot of schools out.

Valley idk what we got to do but we need more scholarship funding for them.

Let’s stop losing to the siac please ... j damn state smh

Let’s start holding our athletic administration accountable for win the hire their buddies rather than making the best hire possible for the football team.

Let’s start winning against the meac elites (bcu , Famu, ncat, and occasionally scsu)

Let’s actually win the celebration bowl this year and going forward please...

I am no fan of the playoffs. However we need better scheduling. No schools under DII need to be on any of our schedules. Edward Waters has an enrollment of 945 students. Virginia-Lynchburg has an enrollment of 342. Prairie View and Jackson St. probably have bands the same size as VUL. I am not knocking any HBCU but they have no business on the schedule of an SWAC school especially Alcorn, Jackson St., Grambling, or Southern. I am a firm believer in playing games on your schedule that are not blowouts before halftime. Playing FBS schools that you have a realistic chance at competing against one FCS and one DII. Auburn and VUL are going to be blowouts. Hopefully we can put up a fight against Auburn. Also we can't afford to continue to lose to DII schools on the schedule.

Wofford won their conference's automatic bid. They didn't get in "over" SCSU. They got in because they won their conference.
 



Believe it or not, most of our HBCUs (at least the bigger ones) have AT LEAST one wealthy alum, maybe more. In addition, the issue with HBCUs has less to do with lack of money and more to do with rogues within the university mismanaging the money it has. We all (and yes, me) have to do a better job of supporting the program, both attendance and otherwise to create additional revenue. 2,000 people attending the games definitely won't create any revenue.
 
Find ways to bring in more money is the main problem.
Solutions:
-do a better job of promoting the games to people in surrounding towns. There should be some sort of advertising that everybody has a good chance of seeing. When its time to recruit, try bringing in some local talent that will lead to friends & family showing up for those games.
- paid subscriptions to view the games live via the internet. Some schools already do this like Alcorn, but others don't. I know Valley live streams the games for free on YouTube which is keeping us from obtaining extra revenue. If people want to watch the games then make them pay $3-5.
- better merchandise. For most teams, you won't find any merch unless you're walking around the local Walmart. Even then those Walmarts have limited & outdated merch from Russell Athletics.
- getting fans/students/alum to donate. Some do, but a lot don't. I think one of the problems with donating is that we don't see how the money is broken down. If you want me to donate to athletics then give me a list of your current goals and how much is needed to obtain each goal.

This is true, but the bigger issue is we'd (and I'm partially including myself) rather stay home and watch Tennessee/Ole Miss instead of going to see Tennessee State/MVSU in person. That won't work.

That's where we have to start. We even see it with the bands. Most of the better HBCU bands are pushing right at 200+ per year, and have been for decades. So, each one of those former members can't donate say, $50-$100 annually to the program?

Bingo. Not just asking alums to blindly give, but be transparent with where and how the money is managed.

Well we definitely as hell don't need your input or support after saying this.

An unspoken issue with HBCU alums is those with built in biases for and against certain schools. You can't be FOR HBCU improvement but s**t on Valley, UAPB, Norfolk, MSU, etc. while saying that you prefer to watch Ole Miss. FOH
